Like you, I don't know much about him but it's not often a player improves from a rookie selection to a 2nd rounder purely on VFL form. Not doubting the club but it certainly caught me as a surprise.

Surprise yes, disappointing/concern certainly not.

Where a player is drafted is just a number and after a few years in the system shouldn't be an indication of the talent or potential of a player.

A 2nd round pick isn't that much to give up for a promising kid who has had a few years in the system, learning from and training with some of the best in the business, in an club environment that has been incredibly strong.

After all, if we didn't trade the pick for Laidler and went into the draft, we'd be selecting a young kid with probably more of a chance of not making it than Laidler, who has obviously spent less time in the AFL environment and played less senior games (albeit only by the 1).

I'm not concerned by this news at all. In fact, I'm encouraged by it as it indicates that we are looking at young talent not only in the underage competitions around the country, but also young talented kids from other clubs in the AFL.

I agree with the number thing. At uni there were guys that got enter scores close to 90 that weren't performing as well as guys who got enter scores in the 60's. People develop their skills at different rates.
