He had a good end to the season has Pauly. He's a quality player when he's up and firing. Just needs to get stronger in the off season and he'll almost be like a new recruit for us in 2012.

Only problem with this BD is that we've been saying it for 3 or 4 years now. Starting to loose faith i've got to say. The planets shouldn't need to allign to perform at this stage of proceedings.

Bower's 2009 was looking good before injuries set in and don't forget that he's still only 23 and not 27 of an M. Warnock, that strangely some would still be happy with.
Whichever way, it won't be out call on what happens, although unless there's something we don't know about Bower, I'll bet that he stays.

I'm with you Harks. Think he will stay :thumbsu:.

We need talls of AFL quality and we need depth at the very least, so no point throwing him out for very little in return.

I'm sure he would like to offer Carlton something for sticking with him through injuries. It'd be a poor personality that chose to run without giving something to the club in return.

In his best form, he is only behind Jamison and Yazzle in our backline. Of course people forget quickly and can only see the here and now.

Not sure this is correct at all, Henderson has shown enough over this season to suggest he will be a long term key Centre half back, he is a better option as a key defender than Bower longer term and it is unlikely the MC will remove Henderson from defence based on his current form.

Not sure anyone on here is advocating putting Bower up for trade, but the fact remains he is out of contract, had at least 2 ordinary seasons in a row and has seemingly not been on the mc's radar much at all the second part of the season, when we have been so light on for taller options.

I'm advocating putting Bower up for a trade. He is no longer in our best 22 which in my opinion is a good thing since he was a liability. Jamo, Hendo, Laidler, Duigan, Yarran, Russell, Scotland, Tuohy are all better than Bower IMO and once Watson and McCarthy are ready to play there will definitely be no place in the side for Bower.

I'd be surprised if the club would actively want to get rid of him but I could see them listening to other clubs re trading options.

Bower would walk into a Freo best 22 right now and would easily play every game next season, barring injury.

Less so at the Eagles as their backline is coming along nicely.

All will be revealed in the fullness of time.

I think trading Bower is an odd idea, his value has never been lower and by all reports this draft is a bit of a stinker on the back end

Pick 37-55 from Freo for Bower is questionable.
When it is possible that he has a good pre season gets over his injuries and slots into what would be a nice backline for the Blues in 2012

Laidler: Jamison: Duigan
Yarran: Henderson: Bower

Only trade Bower if we get near what would be his current peak market value. That is to say either a late first rounder or early second rounder.

If Freo get an end of first rounder (Band 3) for Palmer and offered us that I'd take it.

If Bower seeks a trade (and my very strong preference is that he remain a blue) would we be better looking at a player rather than a pick...something in the Nick Suban mould?

Butcher has resigned with Port... :(

I'm actually relieved that we won't have to hear about him on this board for a while.

Put that one to bed thank goodness.

Why, do you think we'd get a better player or 'cheaper' one or do you want us not to trade at all?

I just don't get it. A lot of Carlton supporters seem to fear any kind of action that represents anything other than a kind of mundane turnover of the list. I mean, what are we trying to do here? Win a premiership or trying to present a nice turn-out for Kernahan and co the next time we play Essendon in an exhibition match?

FFS, if the bloke wanted to stay at Port, the bloke wanted to stay at Port.......we can't hold a gun to their heads.....in fact I heard his final decision had a lot to do with providing you with something else to b*tch about ;) :p

If it did eventuate I thought it would be a draft pick. While they have some players that are attractive I don't think they will let them go, they can't afford to.

Regardless of their year re injuries Freo don't really have alot of depth across the board, their backline is way undermanned for talls, they need more quality mids and could probably do with a couple more forwards.

Freo's best 22 is a good side but they will continue to struggle if they lose more than a couple of key players.

If they want to achieve something before Pav, McPharlin and Sandi shuffle off they need to recruit worthwhile, AFL ready 22-26 year old players across every line.

In isolation Bower would be perfect for their back six.

How much do you think we would need to give for Butcher. Surely First round plus a quality player, maybe one who doesn't want to leave. If not a quality player than another first rounder. Where do we get that? we have to trade for it. So we are losing minimum a best 22 player and a first round draft pick for a potential player, who has shown some inconsistent form.

Furthermore I am not convinced about Butcher's inevitable rise to stardom. Kicking for goal has been an issue of his for years, as has consistency. Slipped from top 3 in the draft because of these.

Even worse, what money are we putting Butcher on? If we are making a big play it is likely there will be a big initial cash splash, carrying on from this, the expectation is that he will improve so we will have to add on to that ample salary. Might end up pushing out some good players so we can keep the guy we head-hunted.

Too many issues in making a play for an unknown quantity. Hasn't even played enough to qualify how good he might get. Plenty of guys have out up a good first 3-4 games and then dropped off the radar.

Reasonable list management requires that there is a degree of certainty in the quality of the player you trade in, and that this be of greater value to you then what you lose. I don't think we could reasonably make that assessment

Not the point at all, is it? It's the fact that people are actually relieved that we dodged the 'bullet' of having a potential champion at the club. For all my 'bitching', have you found anything more to add to your smug list?

Little bit on the heady side there. How much have you seen of Butcher?

Rattan is on record as saying that anyone who wanted out at the end of the season would not be playing in his team. It was aimed at defectors to GWS but perhaps they know that Bower wants to go home and they can't stop him so they wont play him.

I actually think he has quite a bit of currency despite the last two seasons. He is a big strong rebounding defender, still young but already developed who has shown he can perform at the highest level. They don't grow on trees.

However the Jacobs and Grigg trades show that currency doesn't really matter if the player is out of contract. He'll go where he wants to go and we'll get what they give us.
