I have decided to start a rumour file where all rumours surrounding Carlton are collected in this thread (separate to whatever thread they start in) with the rumour, who brought it on to BigFooty, source or unsourced, and the ultimate result, True, False or Pending.

It will provide a quick reference as to how many times similar rumours come up and the positive or negative strike rates of various posters.

Feel free to add them into this thread as you see them on the boards, and I will add them to the one post below. Oh and a link and date started would be good.

For example (to quote current events):

Rumour: Murphy has OP and will not play the practice match vs West Coast.
Started by: PooMonkey
Source: Listening to a conversation at physio
Status: False

Rumour: Murphy is carrying an injury and will not be available for round 1
Started by: celtic_pride
Source: Unsourced (various whispers)
Status: False (note a further injury prior to round 1, does not vindicate this rumour)

This will do two things. It will force people to be genuine in their rumours. We all love to hear the goss but don't want to be cynical about everything because too many falsehoods are put forward.

It will also encourage those with a good record to show off their credibility.

I don't want rumours directly posted in here or discussed in here. Just take them from whatever thread you see and quote them in here so we can track them.

Note that this is not done to single out specific posters but it is topical. I just want to ensure that people are using genuine sources and do appreciate that not all rumours are going to pan out, but we will be able to pick the wheat from the chaff over time.

To the majority of BF posters, it is clear who the few posters are that have reliable sources (ep, bib). On top of that, there are a handful of others who sometimes come across certain information, which again is easy to believe based on their history (C4 for example)

The majority of the other rumours will occur due to once off, random circumstances such as overhearing Murphy at the physio ect. Say the rumour does turn out to be true - what is the point of highlighting the poster as a reliable source, as they will have no ongoing source for which to rely on. On the other hand, if it turns out to be false, then the poster gets further attention with their name in this thread - isn't this what spurs them on, attention?

If you want to make a thread on who is genuine, and who is full of shit - anyone with an ounce of perception can figure this out already. This idea will only spur idiots to post bs rumours, while discouraging the genuine once off rumours being posted for fear of being ridiculed.

Heard a rumour that Jackson Trengove (port) is a bit homesick and is looking to come back to Melbourne at years end and that we have been in his ear and would love him on our books. Not really my rumour but have heard it none the less.

The Garlett one is less strong, and is just that he is strongly considering a move back to WA.

It is no secret Jeff misses home and his love interest.
Will be up to him to decide what is more important.
Not many people get the chance to play AFL at the highest level and your window of opp closes fast

The Trengove rumour is one that I came across from a good source.

Wants to come home to Melbourne and is still very much unsettled in Adelaide (and with Williams).

Carlton, Essendon, Richmond and Hawthorn are keen.

Fair enough, i just don't see the benefits of it I guess.

For instance, lets take the garlett/trengove rumour. I first saw bib mention it, so I knew there must be some truth to it. However, I don't understand the point of saying it is a 'false rumour' if it doesn't eventuate - it will just mean bib was probably correct with the information at the time, but circumstances changed for both players by the end of the year and they decided to stay...

Perhaps the thread would work really well with just the unconfirmed rumours - this would then suit what I think you're saying above. Keeping track of the false rumours just seems pointless, and not a good idea for the reasons I previously listed...(If posters fall behind with the rumour, they either didn't really care, or should search for it)

They are predictions not rumours. Not interested in anything that hasn't come from a specific source stating something as fact.

Firstly, it will not cut the traffic in half unless you think this forum is predominantly about unsubstantiated rumours, which it is not.

Secondly, I expect the best newsbreakers will get calls wrong. They will also get calls right.

If you get somebody that hears something from another supporter or some guy in a bar however, and they are consistently way off base, then maybe they should reconsider stating something as practically factual.

If your sources are good, we can put more credence in what you say and that's the way it should be. Same way decent journalists are separated from tabloid journalists.

If it gets too unwieldy I will can it. Just trying new things out.

So how do you take PooMonkeys rumour?

Hounded out of the park, and proved wrong.....but hard to argue he set up the rumour as a troll.

His little PM to himself was dumb though...but that was after the thread had gotten out of control.
