Rumour: season to be cut to 20 games due to current covid outbreak

Heard from a few sources, mostly unreliable (however one has connections in the afl). The league is trying to reworkthe fixture to end at 20 games this year due to the current covid situation.
Plan is to have a 3 week break as the finalists hub in WA and SA. Announcement expected within the next 48 hours

This seems a strange plan. The fixture squeeze is definitely on for R19, but the league surely still has the pre finals bye up their sleeve even if they don’t want to extend the season.

Also not sure why they’d go for a 3 week break if they’re planning on going into a hub. What difference does that time make?

I assume it is because WA has strict borders, so the 2 weeks to quarrantine, plus a week for a mini preseason?

That wasn’t a barrier for last year’s EF. And there’s still QLD and SA to play games in.

I think the league would explore every possible avenue before cutting games.

It was great planning on having double up games before every team has played eachother once, wasn't it?

Would be a shame if this happened. I love double ups – it's fun to see "the sequel" to an earlier game.

Now they're saying it's a "contingency" plan

The one associated with the league is adamant it'll still happen... who knows
