Either that a lot of individual minds have come to the conclusion, on their own, that he is not up to AFL standard.

He really should be though with the attributes he has got,I remember when he started at the Dees he had a couple of ripping games and I was very pleased that the club took a chance on him.
I do not think it has worked as well as it could have and it is almost entirely due to a lack of confidence in himself because really with his physique and kicking prowess he should be able to make it as an AFL player.

Ps I am talking about Buckley in this post.

They provide completely different things though. Buckley can do more damage with limited touches than Russell can. They are both fairly crap though.

I'm honestly kind of annoyed we weren't in on McIntosh and Broughton. The need at the ruck position is obvious, but a less known need IMO is rebound out of defence. Someone to fill Leon's role was a big miss this season. We should have found a way to use pick 40 and 47 or whatever that pick is now, to at least have been in the reckoning for those two. Absolute bargains, and both would be integral parts of our team next season. Young and whatever straggler we've been linked with (Russell etc,) won't be.

If both Buckley and Russell are fairly crap then maybe better the devil you know.

Doubt we'd have the cap room for Broughton and doubt McIntosh would want to come to Collingwood to play VFL and be second fiddle to Jolly.

And the whole "we miss Leons drive from half back" theory is a myth. He played in defence for one season out of his entire career. Even then he went missing when it mattered.

Many people have come to the conclusion that his decision making is terrible. Not all the time, but too often for AFL standard. His physical size and strong kick haven't been a problem.

Quite true, I'm not interested in Russell whatsoever. Not fussed whether Buckley stays or goes.

Sure we probably don't have the cap room for Broughton. But perhaps we did if we didn't pickup Young, and I'd give up a draft pick for Broughton over getting Young for free any day of the week. Say what you want about Leon, I thought our drive out of defence was a problem for us this year. It was noticably lacking compared to a side like Hawthorn.

As for McIntosh, IMO he's a better ruckman than Jolly. I'd have made him first choice. I know the club probably wouldn't do it, but I think that's the way it stands when you look at them as players objectively. Both Jolly and McIntosh are probably some chance of breaking down, so they'd both get games in any case. It strengthens an area of weakness whichever way you look at it.

agree with all that bar Davis comment. Guy was AA in that year so i think fair to say we missed him this year. I think the real area we missed him was his kick outs. Didnt have something like 95% to advantage. I remember at one point he had 80 odd kickouts and all bar one had gone to advantage. We were nowhere near as good in that area this year.

And when Leon went back and dominated, mysteriously, our forward pressure fell in a heap. And stranger, Leon used to line up at full back at kck outs and when they went short to the pocket, he was always very quickly there to cover.

Don't know how tight the TPP is at this point, but apparently Broughton has a big final year in his current contract that was due to end after 2013.

There are alot of players who have good kicking skills who don't make it. Buckleys problems are obvious and at his age I cannot see them ever changing. He is a horrible decision maker, no where near hard enough and panicks in games with any instensity. He has played a few good games but they are generally games like the one against port adelaide this year with zero pressure.

I have never been a massive fan of Russell but he did finish 2nd in a b and f at carlton which is alot more then Buckley has ever acheived so I suspect he is atleast an upgrade.
