Be keen for Giles. Pederson and Martin don't excite me at all and has Caddy done anything other than be a high draft pick because there have been some generous offers around here for him.

THere is a difference between being required and being on the table, and a player being out of favour thus on the table.

Wellingham, if traded, wouldn't be let go by unless he wanted to leave or if we were receiving an upgrade.

I'd trade him for Giles

Giles has been great this year...but I don't think strategically he is the way to go.

You couldn't play both he and Jolly in the same team realistically. They are both the lumbering style number 1 ruck. Wellingham however offers something different in that he can tag, has pace, can play forward flank and gives us X factor. I think a Wellingham for Giles trade means we have an excess in one position, and leave a hole in another.

Giles has been effective as a forward at time this year on the other hand...but I doubt he would be in the side to play as a permanent forward and part time ruck.

I still think our best plan is to go with Jolly another year, and let Witts/Ceglar take over in 2014.
Then we need someone to cover in the Leigh Brown style role.

I think we have worked it well this year with Jolly. Wood has stepped in to provide cover where needed and give Jolly a break. That's why I wouldn't be delisted Wood.

What we need is the backup ruck/3rd tall forward option. Getting Giles means we are pulling the pin on Jolly's career utlimately. He is playing too well to do that.

I know neither Martin or Pederson have set the world on fire...but neither had Leigh Brown. Yet, we are now missing Leigh Brown more than any other of the retirements.

You sure as hell could play Jolly and Giles together have u seen him up forward?

absolute bonkers that you think they couldnt do it
Cloke, Dawes and Giles in the one forward line??? Far too top heavy. Perhaps would be ok if Dawes dropped out....btu then you would probably still need a more agile Pederson type 3rd tall or let Jackson Paine do his stuff.

Would be more than fine look at west coast they play 4 talls and do a heck of a job with it

no reason why we cant

If recruiting him for the sole ruck role, i think it would be ok as a Jolly replacement for a few years whilst Witts matures.

As the 'Leigh Brown' role, maybe not, but if Jol goes down, our options are damn thin.

At worst, having him means we at least have a half decent AFL ready ruckmen on the list not named Wood.

We'd be getting Giles to fill in between the time Jolly retires and Witts is ready.
Let's be honest, Jolly won't be able to play every game next year and let's pray to Jeebus that Cameron Wood is not our backup.

Geez caddy is coping a bit of flack on this thread. Some supporters on here are deluded, it doesn't matter what you think about him, he was a top 10 draft pick, inside midfielder, played 22 games this season and is rated very highly by the goldcoast.

it will take a first round pick, and a youngster to get him. or for example, a wellingham and a 3rd or 4th rounder.

To be honest he would be ideal for our team. It has been shown this season, that while Beams, Sidebottom, Pendles, Thomas etc all are gun midfielders. None of them are bottom of the pack kind of players, which is where our midfield can be exposed. Luke Ball is getting on, and this guy can be the replacement for the next decade.

Giles, i would go nuts if this happened. He is a star! Would play second ruck to Jolly next season, going solo when Jolly needs a rest. He can go forward and kick goals, has a great mark, and has a great work rate.
He wouldn't cost that much on the trade table as well. From previous reports, Sheeds doesn't rate him and has openly said he is looking at a new ruckman next season.
Giles would be the priority, is still young and has shown he is a versatile ruckman, something we crave.

I'd definitely been on Giles at the right price.

I must be all alone when I say Wellingham isn't to be traded and not for sale, especially in any deal involving Caddy, Martin or Pedersen.

He has more currency than all of those three.

He is a keeper.

I doubt GC would do a straight swap of Caddy for Wellers.

Caddy is worth a first rounder and more, he was a top 10 pick and there is no way his value has diminished after two seasons.

Wood has to Go . ... Has had plenty of time and is useless ! The pies will de list him . Giles would be a fantastic inclusion and could play along side Jolly. Have no doubt they could play in the same side . However keeping in mind Jolly will play less games next season in turn giving Giles games needed, to eventually come the #1 man . With Jolly as a mentor Giles has the ability to become a premium ruckman in the competition . As time goes on Giles becomes #1 Jolly finishes his career as our # 2 and our young developing rucks by then will be Giles understudies .

Both Giles and Caddy still have developing to do. They are not a part of the short term premiership window as opposed to Wellingham or Brown (both of whom could be traded). They are to be considered so that we don't drop away in 4 years but it depends on how we balance our priorities

From what i hear around the traps we arent into giles. Opposite is true about caddy.
Our recruiters really rated caddy in his draft year.
Lets wait and see, i think in the ruck we may go for a cheap stop gap support measure, something that costs a late pick only.

He may be worth that but he isn't worth a first rounder + Wellingham. That is just amateur hour trading.

Would u trade wellingham for Giles?

In short, no I wouldn't.

I really rate Wellingham and he has something that is different to alot of our mids. He actually has the ability to be inside and out and has pace from congestion- something most of our mids- Swanny at times and Daisy aside- lack.

I truly believe Wellingham will flourish in coming seasons as a top line mid. He just has been used wrongly this year playing predominently as a forward. Last week vs WCE he had much more midfield time and he just looked so comfortable hitting packs hard and being in the thich of the action.

This is the reason IMO why he wants to stay and why the club is so eager to retain him to a 3yr deal.

Best thing about Giles is that he can take a grab and kicks goals.

Huge plus for a ruckmen.

Now that im think about ruckmen, why couldn't we have had Jol during his early years/Syd years.

The premierships....*drools*

Just Depnds who the Other Player is

I dont understand why was Giles not looked at in the VFL last year ?

maybe thats where we were looking and why we didnt find him, he was in the sanfl.
not much we could do about it given GWS listed him as a prelisted player, wouldve had to trade with GWS for him and they did not want to give him up as he was their number 1 ruck

Thought he played VFL my mistake

I like the look of Martin - he is quick, athletic, can jump but not sure about is marking ability. The Anvil was very good overhead.

Pedersen looks like a better option purely because of his versatility. Can play back, forward or pinch hit in the Ruck Leigh Brown style.

We are not blessed with pace as it is, why trade one of our quickest for a ruckman. I reckon we only have Mooooooons with 'genuine' pace. Sinclair is quick. Ugle will be gone, so we will be light on for pace.

Collingwood show interest in Jonathan Giles.

This is a good choice to target a quality ruckman

Agree with all this.
