Ridiculous call about Wellingham.

Just remember he was taken out of the midfield this year so his numbers were always going to decrease. Also battled injuries throughout the year and just couldn't get back to his best. I reckon a solid pre-season and he'll be back.

It's just funny how everyone is quick to comment how we lack a bit of pace, but then we want to trade Harry and Wellingham.

Spot on, Harry O is our best rebound defender and Wellingham has pace to burn.

I think if we retain all our list that is required and pick up a 2nd ruck/fwd (Giles) then we are laughing.
When Johno & Dids retire at the end of next year....then we have some cash to splash on a young midfielder.

I think Wellingham should be our tagger.
I agree. He can hurt teams running the other way as well. Would of loved for him to have ye job on Mitchell against te hawks. He would he led to the ball and then could have used his pace to run away from the contest.
Harry is still important to us. Would be better if he gave off his first option and went back to a defending first and attacking second mindset.

I don't think anyone is saying Wellingham is bad player or would be annoyed if he was to be retained, but of our mids that have some currency and the depth that we have there and supposed interest in a kid like Caddy, he may be the odd man out.

I love the Sack! Has always been one of my favourites and loved him but was annoyed that he was given much of a chance with MM. He is lapping it up now, taken hold of this opportunity! His aggression and agility is great, only thing that lets him down at times is skills. Hopefully he can take another step forward and work on execution in and around pressure.
I think many are alluding to the idea that if we were interested in another player, then the ones who would be on the table first are Wellingham/O'Brien although I think O'Brien is important for us. The first player who we'd let go from our best 22 would be Wellingham you would think, I've always rated him but he just hasn't provided the goods as of yet, shown big potential but can't get the consistency right perhaps it's the roles he is playing. However, I doubt he'll ever get a permanent midfield gig in our side especially with the quality of players we've got running through there, it could be a possibility if/when Ball and Swan have retired but not atm. I really believe that if he were to join another club, he'd immediately be one of the better mids in the side and would quickly show promise to his potential.

We need to be realistic if we want to pick up decent players from other clubs to fill the holes in our team. Wellingham is obviously a player that Collingwood figure is tradeable or he would not be left till last to be re-signed. Neeld wants him at Melbourne and we are interested in Stefan Martin, so a possible trade exists. Similarly, if we are after any WA players, Sharrod may wish to return home. Admittedly his loss means we are short one more pacy player, but it is up to the club to decide recruitment priorities.

I agree Dave. There has been a lot of hate for Wellingham of late. Don't understand why. I think he is still an important player for us.

Because I can't see him getting Much Better and If we get something of Need then he can be Traded.

We would not just Give Him Away

If Wellingham played for another club we be wanting to trade him in. I think we need him. I can't see how we could trade in anyone better to replace him. If someone wanted to upgrade our first round pick to a top 6 pick, which is unlikely, then maybe it would be a worthwhile longer term decision.

Firstly, talk of Wellingham trade is not based on his lack of ability, but his currency. I don't think Wellingham is a forward pocket, but he is great around any ball being thrown-up in ruck contest in the forward 50. We havent spent much time there this season so that advantage has been diminished.

I think if Daisy is right next season, we have a pacey winger/mid/resting forward to work with. Wellers does have pace, which is his advantage, and certainly can get in his opponents face if we ever decide to tag again.

But you have to weigh this up against any potential advantages you may gain in a trade.

Swan and Ball have two years left and no-one yet ready to fill those roles so far as I can tell. We'd be left with Pendles, Blair, Thomas and Beams, plus some cameos. Josh Thomas may or may not make it. Someone like Caddy would be timely if all the wraps on him are on the money.

If you look at Hawthorn, their mids are not quick at all. In fact to my eye their only pacey mid/forward is Rioli. We have Thomas who provides that pace for both positions. Moving the ball quickly is not just about leg pace, but winning it and sending it by boot quickly forward or to a good option.

I think the way for us to look at the trade table is to see what we have in excess being tabled for something we need.

At the minute we need a mobile ruck (at the very least) and another inside ball winner (planning). If we can retain Wellers and address our needs, then that's all good, but I wonder if we can do that with our draft picks alone while we're in the window.

Yep, we need more pace not less. I remember the tagging job he did on Gabblet when we flogged Geelong years ago and he would be much stronger now, he's a keeper.
