I just think it would be a mistake to trade out players from a proven premiership formula and who got us to a prelim despite playing poorly for guys that wouldn't be a huge upgrade.

I'd trade both out if we were re-building or could get a star player onto our list. But i don't think Martin + Caddy would bring us closer to a flag than Dawes + Wellingham next year.

This post sums it all up for me. Agree 100%.

Wellingham and Dawes >>>>>> Daylight>>>>>>>> Martin and Caddy.

Debatable, caddy will be a MUCH better player than wellingham imo, caddy will reach beams levels at the pies. Martin and dawes are probably about par, however martin is the better ruckmen. So im not sure why they are daylight above the other two

Caddy may one day reach beams levels but Wellingham is very underrated around here. If he were given the midfied mintues Beams and to a lesser extent Sidebottom received this year, he would have improved his game further. It will come for Wellingham. He has plenty of talent.

As for Martin being on a par with Dawes, not even close.

Dawes at least shown he is capable of kicking a bag (has kicked at least a bag of 5 from memory). Only thing Martin can do better is ruck around the ground.

Dawes of 2012 is a bad comparison because he was playing a role he just wasn't suited for. He is a permanent key forward.

That is so preposterous. You can say it's close one side or the other. Daylight? Just ridiculous hyperbole.

There is some serial over-rating of our list on this board. We have weaknesses and short-term list issues that need serious addressing. If we think we are going to address them by going through the draft we are in some swampy terrain.

Personally i think Wellingham is overrated, most people have him as a required player with a lot of talent. I see him as an average inconsistant player who looks better than he is thanks to playing in a star studded midfield.

Martin was a very handy player for the dees in 2011, he is far better around the ground and in the ruck than dawes. Up forward dawes has been terrible for a long time, can't mark and his shooting at 26% accuracy from set shots... i doubt martin could do worse.

Who cares if he kicked one bag in 2010 against poor opposition? its about consistancy. There's no way you can say dawes is a lot better than martin.

Players like Wellingham make our midfield star studded IMO. A great midfield is the sum of all its parts. A few top liners count for shit if you dont have the depth to sustain it. Wellingham is an important cog in that part because he is better than just a role player and he has talent to burn. He can succeed at the elite level at a higher level IMO.

As for Martin, I'd love to see his best output put together compared to that of Dawes. I'd be pretty confident in that Dawes would have him covered. Martin is your typical role player. Not especially good at any one thing but can plug enough holes to be effective. He isn't better than Dawes.

Here are the Martin stats:

Taken a year later but still better stats than Dawes and some genuine flexibility.

On Wellingham and Caddy, well that's a bit early to tell but you have to ask why he went so high in the draft. I think Wellers benefits from our system and surely Caddy would do the same. I wouldn't be devo if we retained Wellingham, but I reckon we're in a position to upgrade here. We also need to fill that ball winning role once Swan and Ball retire.

I agree wellingham is good midfield depth, however we have enough of it to not lose much if he goes.

If we lose wellingham and gain caddy, our depth just got better.

Plus we already have blair ball sidebottom williams fasolo shaw as players who can go through the midfield as depth next year (might of forgotten someone).

People are forgetting Caddy was pick SEVEN, and in 2012 has been one of the top GC players for goals clearances and disposals, he is a young INSIDE mid (big need) and recent history suggests any high draft pick that goes to the pies will turn into an AA superstar. A superstar is something wellingham isnt, and never will be.

Agree Dave - we are within the premiership window because of the quality and youth of our list. Therefore we need to tweak the list not trade as if we are rebuilding. Trading Wellingham and Dawes for Martin and Caddy is a net minus at takes us further from premiership success. Dawes has shown enough to suggest he can develop into a 2nd Ruck and in developing Ceglar and Witts there is no room for Martin unless we get him for a bargain.
If push came to shove I would actually try to get Caddy because our inside mid stocks are not great with Ball aging and ONLY if Josh Thomas continues to struggle - because then Caddy will be needed.

........... do not want another NQR.

As I noted earlier, when Leigh Brown went to Collingwood I said he was a spud who couldn't play any position well. Under the masterful tutelage of Malthouse, however, he proved to be a very handy 'role player' and a key part of your premiership-winning team in 2010.

Just because I don't rate Pederson doesn't mean he couldn't be an excellent get for your mob (or, indeed, another club).

I don't think people are forgetting the draft number, I think it's actually the basis for a lot of people's hype without seeing much of the kid play. He's talented obviously, and goes hard, and every time I've watched him play I've been impressed with his strong work around the ball, but I've also been a bit cautious because his disposal hasn't convinced me. I still hope we get him.

No it doesn't.
A dud who can't get a game with North, is somehow going to walk into our side?

You've never seen him play. He isn't a dud. If he was playing like he did this year for our side he'd be up in the seniors so quick his arse would be on fire, and not one of us would be against it. That's not to say he's great, but we have a glaring hole that needs filled and he would be an option if acquired cheap.
