Why?? He costs 800k a year, why would it be mandatory to offer him a contract of that size? Can you imagine how guys like Pendles, Reid and Beams would feel? Let alone Dawes who 12 months ago turned down much more money to stay loyal?
bigger pwr fwds who can ruck a dime a dozen, they get more money. Just how it is and im pretty sure those lads wont mind Tippett getting $800k if he can get to Collingwood.

There's no way Tippett's worth 800k. I reckon he's vastly overrated, unless he can manage to string a sh1tload of games like his performance in the prelim.

Ok, I will state this one more time just in case people haven't heard. Kurt Tippett was concussed 3 times in the space of 6 weeks this year, and it clearly effected him, he came back a shadow of the player he was. Now given what we know about head injuries and how worried the AFL is about them, what happens if Kurt goes down again next year? Even just once? There is no way he is worth 800k at that risk, especially not when we have Lynch, CLoke and Dawes as power forwards now anyway (and Paine as an up and comer as well).

And I'm pretty sure those lads would mind a lot if Tippett got that kind of money with us, especially when it took so long to agree to terms with Cloke, a guy who has already played 150+ games with us and probably proven more than Tippett.

You're playing fantasy football. Look at the Swans, do they have a sexy looking team on paper??

1) the concussions were unlucky and came back a shadow of the player he was? his best game this year was in the prelim.
2) what if he goes down again? what if Dawes goes down with a ACL? just because he has had a few concussions doesnt change anything.
3)The Cloke saga has nothing to do with it, totally irrelevant. You pay what it takes to make your team the best in the comp and Tippett is a mile better then Dawes and would strengthen us a lot. The players want to win premierships, if a player gets more money then others it wont matter as long as they are winning

Apparently Melbourne have confirmed they will be making offers to both Dawes and Wellingham next week. Not sure Dawes will be on the table without Tippett but if Wellingham is going this may help to drive up his price

Wellingham said he will either go West or stay at Collingwood, so it would have to be a pretty good offer from the Dee's.

Dawes would be a great get for the Dee's though.

Funny you say that considering that Melb list manager never said Dawes directly....just that type of young talent.

I'll bet my left one they would mind plenty and apart from it being impossible it would be a disaster with our list. We don't need another unreliable kick let alone one who could be out of football the next time he misjudges a mark and bumps his head.

We cannot afford Tippet and if we could it wold be a reckless risk anyway.

Spend the money on Wellingham and keeping the group tight.

mate Wellingham is gone. Also the concussion issue isn't a issue. If we can get him then we should, if we cant afford it then its irrelevant but anyone that thinks Tippet wouldnt make us better are delusional

Thank god, sense at last.

If Wellingham goes, then we have 300-500k in the kitty (wage plus vets savings). The temptation then is to offload Wood (even paying some of his wage) and trade Dawes for an upgrade which would need to be a forward, i.e. Tippett.

What would we do with the 300-500k freed up if Wellingham left? You would be foolish not to use it.

I guess you could renegotiate and front load some contracts with Daisy etc. Leaving massive space in the next 2-3 years for another raid.

Why Dawes?
Please tell me who is going to play FF...
Someone who can take a mark and kick straight, something Dawes can't do.

Lynch for Dawes straight swap, we are a better team. Goldsack will remain as the 3rd tall forward and we can also promote Jackson Paine too if we want to move Goldsack back to defense.

Bullshit! Dawes was great in 2010/2011 when he didn't have to play KPF & Ruck.
Lynch takes the 2nd ruck roll and Dawes can get his confidence up at FF each week.

If you replace Dawes with Lynch we still have the same conundrum.

Dawes can't take an overhead mark. It's weird, because watching footage of his first AFL goal, the commentators said he was noted for his contested marking ability. Lol'd like hell.

He used to be a deadeye dick though. His kicking is a confidence thing. He gets his back and he'll improve on that. His game relied a lot on blowing up defenders through repeated leads in and out of the 50m arc. Because Cloke plays similarly, it didn't give KPDs a chance to roll off and catch a break or for 3rd men up to influence a lot of contests.

Playing in the ruck has killed him two ways here, it reduces his ability to run around and lead because he's in the middle more and tussling with giant rucks. It also gives defenders a break, allowing them to zone off and run 3rd man up on Cloke or play loose man.

Lynch brings things back to 2010/2011 status quo as a replacement for the Anvil. If all goes well, Dawes regains confidence and gets his game back. He chips in with a solid ~30-35 goal season and becomes a solid contributor as second banana. If not, he goes out and Paine comes in.

Works for me either way.

Don't want Tippett though, not for the kind of price that's been floated. Would rather solve our Leon Davis 2.0 problem or do something about the pure ruck stocks.

Channel seven reported that Wood wasnt happy when told by the club he could be traded for salary cap space....he he he he he:)

Personally, I cant wait to see Jack Paine after a summer in the gym. He has great hands, and will over the next few years become a really handy forward for us. Just needs some more size.
I'm open to trading Dawes to the highest bidder. i love the guy, but I think we've already seen his best. Lynch coming in makes it harder for him to play 22 games next year.

Rather than paying super-huge bucks for Tippett (although, i'd love to have him in our side) we really need some back line/midfield pace. Lets go for 2 (Picks 17 & 18 - if Wellers leaves, and I think he will) of the best available young kids with pace to burn and some kicking skills. Look over the last 5 years, there have been plenty of kids that have made an impact in their debut season. If we did that, the money saved would (as somebody else mentioned) go towards re-signing Daisy or Pendles or who ever is off contract next time free agency rolls around.

Picks 17 & 18 are not to be sneezed at, it's been a while since we had a good crack at the draft.

Depends on who is available.. if we like someone for next year, front-loading may be the way to go. I think most eyes will be on GC and GWS..

In US sports, teams are now trading players in and out with the goal of competing for a certain signing/s two years into the future. Smart AFL list managers will have done their homework and planned accordingly.

If Wellingham left for a decent pick, I wouldn't be adverse to keeping the majority of the cap space 'open' and re-structuring a couple of contracts temporarily. We could do with a decent infusion of youth.. we don't want to end up like St Kilda. Geelong do it well, even though they missed out on Dangerfield and Boak.
