if we end up with pick 13,17,18 and lose 2 players in our best 22, i dont think any of the 3 players we pick will be able to come in and contribute like say welligham can... we want to improve our side this offseason to win a premiership next season! if we end up with all three picks im pretty certain we have something planned to bring in a big fish in trade week or we might have a go at someone like caddy? he might be ready to contribute straight away, would we be able to get caddy buy trading pick 13?

Two facts stand out about the two we may lose from best 22, they were both fringe 22 in that they weren't huge contributors and we already have Lynch which addresses our most pressing problem - a genuine 2nd ruck / marking forward.

Neither seem particularly happy with their positions in the club atm with Dawesy feeling the pressure on all sides with the arrival of Q and the inferred pressure from Paine, Witts, Ceglar. No matter what he says I think the rise of Sidebottom and in particular Beams has put Shaz further down the list of mid rotations and he doesn't like his chances of ascension into the core group.

Always love big Dawsey's attitude and input but if his heart isn't in it then its a case of "thanks for you help in the flag year and since and best of luck at Melbourne".

Likewise Shaz seems to be in that midset of wanting a larger footprint on a game - he shouldn't get a game ahead of any of Ball, Pendles, Swan, Thomas or Beams so that leaves slim pickings for a on ball aspirant. Again it would be a case of "Thanks for your efforts in our premiership year and since and good luck with your new club".

Picks 13, 17 and 18 could just be enough to extend our window in the hands of Hine and Rendell.

If we get pick 13 for Dawes, why don't we offer that to Sydney for Sam Reid?
They can then forward that to Adelaide for Tippett.
I know that Reid signed a 5 year deal with Sydney last year. so perfect timing to swoop.
He has won a flag, and now he can play with his brother

Why does it have to be the new draftees though? Why can't it be Fasolo taking on added responsibility and stepping into the midfield with a mixture of Ball returning from injury?

With an another pre-season into Elliott surely he can pick up some of the slack left by Fasolo moving up the field the return of Ball means that Blair will spend more time up forward as well. We have a number of players returning from LTI which give us so many options even from within the list that I just don't understand why some on this board are close minded in terms of what we can do. I'm sorry FasoloSHow this isn't really directed at you its just that I've seen quite a number of posters express the same feelings of late.

We could do all of the above whilst also bringing in 3 of the best 18 year olds in the country and allow them to develop for 2-3 years while an already very strong 25-30 attack the premiership. It then leaves us in a position to extend our window even further.

For instance say we draft Matthew Haynes, Nick Vlastuin and Ben Kennedy with those 3 picks how awesome would it be to have them with 3 pre-seasons and 30 odd games under their belt walking into the best 22 when the likes of Swan, Ball and Didak finish up (they obviously aren't straight up replacements but they'd be handy). We add those 3 at the age of 21 to a midfield already containing Pendles (27), Thomas (28), Beams (25), Sidebottom (25), Blair (25) and Fasolo (23) and we've automatically regenerated.

The Cats are in the middle of doing this with Smedts, Guthrie, Christensen, Menzel and Duncan so IMO we'd be crazy not to do the same!

true, all good points. I keep forgetting that when we add bally, Q, and krak to our 2012 side, that alone will make us a better side. if ball can get back to his 2011 form i think he will make a huge difference to our side.

I think hine and rendell can do some really great things with those three picks, but i think we should at least trade one of them for a mature experienced afl player. Im not sure who would be available that we should go after though.. any thoughts?

Or Scodog possibly pick up a Dean Towers, aged 22?, who could possibly come in and add a different dynamic straight away if he's good enough, much in the way Isaac Smith did for Hawthorn last year and this year.

I'm not against using a pick to gain some experience so long as it fills a genuine PRESENT need but apart from Q there doesn't appear to be much mature talent that fits those needs.

I don't believe a second first ruck move is warranted atm, Jols is very durable and will certainly see out the year barring unforeseen injury next year.

Our real needs are a running back pocket / flanker with good disposal and some real speed around the packs. Caddy certainly doesn't appear to fit either need so that rules out the best of the young but AFL ready brigade and its slim pickings from then on really.

I hear what your saying and i kinda agree with you. I think it would be a smart idea to stock up with young guns to keep our window open longer. I just think we should at least go after another ready made player that can walk into our side and contribute to the 2013 right away maybe getting someone like a caddy for one of the draft picks or try and go for giles rather than taking a chance on someone like cegler, witts, stef martin (if we get him) to take the number 1 ruck role if jolly goes down, or go after someone in free agency like clinton young?.. he could play a big role for us being a half back flanker who breaks the lines and does all the kick ins with his dangerous left foot.

We should do the smart thing and pick up some young talent in this draft. I just think we should use one of the picks as trade bate

I'd be all for it because from what I've seen and read about him he could well be a walk up start next year, however from what I know of this year's draft I'd take a pass on Towers in the first round. If we could upgrade 39 to something around 30 that'd be perfect, but that's improbable so I'd be hoping he's still around at 39.

This year's draft has a stand out 6-8 and then another 10-15 after that who are very good quality. If we managed to get 3 (I'd be looking at the 3 I mentioned plus Garlett and Stringer) from the second group and Towers for the loss of Dawes and Wellingham, I'd be whistling Dixy.

Because Sam Reid is on a 5 year deal.
I doubt we could fit his current contract in our TPP

clinton young?

He's a free agent so if we chase him we don't need to use one of the potential first rounders.

The others I'd look at are Matthew Jaensch from the Crows. He's absolute silk by foot, 23 so at the right age, has 34 games to his name and IMO would be perfect for that small rebounding defender who can take the kick ins. He'd probably cost a second rounder depending on contract situation. Josh Toy is another with crisp skills and on the outer with the Suns. He again wouldn't demand a first rounder though. The last one I'd seriously look at is probably the only one I'd part with a first rounder for and that's Easton Wood. He's not as skillful as the other two, but he breaks the lines and also has the ability to really shutdown on a small or medium. A first rounder would be overs for him, however in order to get him away from the kennel I believe it'd take quite a bit.

The problem with going for a bigger name is the salary cap so honestly I only see us trading one of those picks if its to fill a need and with we're things sit I'd rather not reach for one when we can go to the draft with 3 in the top 20 and 4 in the top 40 and let Hine and Rendall go to work.

4 picks in the top 40 with 3 of them in the top 20?

Jeezuz Hine and Rendell would both have semi's at the mere prospect lol

It'd be good to get our teeth stuck into a draft for a change wouldn't it! The last 3 times we did turned out ok I guess in 08, 06 and 05.

Indeed it would dog, opportunities like the one developing for us are rare for a team that has been in flag contention for years.

We have filled our most pressing need with Q so now we have a heaven sent opportunity to savage this draft with two of the best talent judges in the business armed with 3 first round and one second round pick.

I can sense blood in the water if we get our trades done and line these picks up.
