I hope not. I'd much prefer we develop Ceglar and Witts from next season, particularly Ceglar. That is as much about being able to utilise them as we wish in the twos (give them extra ruck minutes) as it is pumping some senior games into them.
Yeah I get what you mean but if Jolly goes down for the season early on....then what?
Those 2 young blokes are not ready for senior footy while their ass points to the ground!

Yeah i'd be happy to see Wood go.

I guess it depends where the club sees Ceglar and Witts in terms of their development. I personally think Ceglar is ready for senior footy. But I see your concerns. It would be a big ask for Ceglar to hold the position down all season. But honestly, I doubt Wood would be any better. It was why I was keen on us chasing Giles but obviously a ruck is not on the clubs agenda.

The best option is to draft a big bodied state-league ruckman onto our rookie list, as we could give Ceglar and Witts a chance in the few games that Jolly is going to miss either through injury or just being rested, but that mature ruckman could shoulder the load should Jolly be out for extended periods that Ceglar/Witts couldn't handle.

It'd be cheaper than keeping Wood, and wouldn't interfere with the development of Ceglar/Witts.

Of course, I'd rather get Stefan Martin, but I don't know if that's even a realistic option, or something we're interested in.

Yeah, i'm very keen for us to recruit some promising mature state leaguers late. It would improve our depth and give our VFL team some mature players to structure around.

dansa that is the funniest thing I've read all year but it also gave me an incredible sense of reassurance to know that I'm not the only person doing this. Except in my case I'm a twenty year school teacher with three kids and a wife who is growing increasingly worried over my obssessive monitoring of news that is not news or evolves at such a glacial pace that it can barely be classified as news. That's what I love about these BF threads, the sense of knowing that I'm not alone, that there are others who just cannot let go of the season, hoping desperately to eke something positive out of the trade period, to feel optimism and hope for next year. And the AFL has designed it with a genius to keep us hooked to the drip feed until at least November and the National Draft. After that I begin monitoring Arizona/Utah diaries. I am truly pathetic.

As a fellow teacher with similar habits, might I suggest 'magnificently pathetic'? :)

No, but thats the point....none of them are up to it! 2 are young blokes developing and the other is a bum.

Point is that we need a serious backup for Jolly....end of.
I understand where you're coming from, but neither of them have been given the chance.

Surely they couldn't be any worse than Wood's half a dozen pathetic games a year?

They would probably do much better but do we really want to drop one of them in the deep end. Imagine Ceglar had to play 20 games as number ruck....could end up like Josh Fraser and we don't want to see that again!

in regards to the ruck we only need a stop gap
ceglar and witts show promise but not ready for full time senior footy
we just need someone in case jolly gets injured for next year
no point spending a draft pick to get someone
either keep wood for one more season or get someone from a state league as a mature age rookie
spending one of our top 40 picks on a ruck that will only be back up for the next year or 2 until Witts passes him is a waste.
Rather stick with Wood who was about as serviceable as required (game versus natanui and cox aside) due to the fact it costs nothing except a spot on the list.

No we don't want to see that happen again.
But Fraser was not really a ruck was he?
Because of our position in the league at that time and his number 1 pick status, also the pressure for us to develop a ruck he was thrown to the wolves unfortunately.
Saying that though Ceglar and Witts are rucks and should have been given at least a couple of games during 2012.

Totally agree...they should be given a carck...but should not have to be number 1 ruck if Jolly is unfit.

Wood was only serviceable against Suns and GWS. Against anybody powerful, he gets smashed. Not a bad tap ruckman, but dreadful around the ground. I cringe when I see him go up for a pack mark, or even a 1 on 1 attempt. 9 times out of 10, he will spill it, and go to ground. A VFL/SANFL/WAFL/Wherever ruck man with some bulk is a great idea, if we don't chase Martin in the Dawes trade. Would free up a small amount of cap - can't Imagine Wood is on much. Having said that, I am all for Stefan Martin coming to our club. I don't think we will get him AND pick 20. We will have to offer somebody else. Didn't Melbourne show some Interest in Luke Rounds?

Correct they shouldn't be number 1.
Would they have been any worse than Wood this year though as a number 2 backup and a run in the forward line?

We will never know now.

Trouble is Wood also showed promise many years ago and we parted with a number 14 draft pick for him.........Promise at VFL/Club level equates to nothing for ruckman imo....We need a ready made player I think to bridge the gap for a few years whilst we also blood guys like Ceglar/Witts to see if they are actually up to it. I have no issues in giving these guys a chance through injury, suspension and resting but certainly not prepared to put a season on them.

Remember Currie?

He and his family big time Pies supporters.

Eddie was desperate to get him when at Swans.

Now had good season in SANFL.

He's the man.

I'm assuming you're talking about Daniel Currie?

I did Auskick/vickick with Paul (his older brother) in Eltham.
Now it was a while ago, but I swear they were North supporters...

Either way I'd be OK with us giving him a go just so I can say "I (sorta) played with that guy" lol.
