If we get West then Wood and maybe Ceglar should be delisted, otherwise we will have once again in the VFL too many big guys of ruck size. It is quite likely that the team would contain Wood, West, Witts and Ceglar. If this is to be the case then changing coaches is not going to make any difference to the performance of the VFL team. Hine and his cohorts may be good at picking likely players but their performance recruiting ruckmen has been less than ordinary.

If we picked someone like West, of course that is as a Wood replacement.

Glad they've ended the VFL experiment, it was neither fish nor fowl. We have to treat it like it should be - a vehicle for winning and for development, both of which advantage the senior list.

would be a very difficult to get Trent West. cats already have issues with list size so they wont be interested in guys like Rounds. they'll only trade West for a draft pick and 42 wont cut it. surely we wouldnt consider a deal invloving us trading pick 21?

The thing with West is it's a bit hit and miss.

I've banged on about Martin because he offers us that utility option that we need. If we are just replacing pure ruck prospects with others, then it's probably not of any value in my mind.

Surely, no.

Collingwood will be 100% getting another ruck,to back jolly.
Mail is around geelong collingwood are sniffing around there rucks.
Geelong will demand a pick they know we wont budge on.
Plan b,collingwood should have a crack at martin or pederson.
Cameron wood,is not,I REPEAT,is not,our future ruck.
How is he to take over ruck duties when jolly retires.
Cam wood gets smashed week in week out in the vfl.
He has no confidence, and doesnt run to every contest.
This is why we had players like pendlebury take the ruck v west coast this year.
That was a sight.
Was like shaq v muggsy bogues.

Mini skips where is the mail.

Why do we want a 198cm ruckman? Why did Geelong recruit a ruckman last year and again this year to play no.1 ruck in their team? I don't get why we are after this guy. We have a 2nd ruck/forward. If West was going to be any sort of ruckman wouldn't Geelong have kept him? Please explain because it just seems like a waste of a spot on the list from where I am sitting. Surely we should have bid for McIntosh rather than this guy.

You cant honestly feel confident going into next year with the Q-Stick as our 2nd ruckman? surely?

I will be shocked if we go into next season without picking up an experienced back up ruckman through this trade periodm absolutely shocked.

seems strange we didnt get Martin as part of the Dawes deal. can only think we fully expected to get Hickey.

Personally I don't want us to pick up another ruck prospect at this stage. What I'd like is for us to get a better RUCK coach. Why hasn't Damien Monkhorst been invited back? It's ok to have Jolls there to help the kids out but they actually need a demanding ruck coach, someone who demands aggression at the contest, aggressive running to contests and to hotspots forward and back. Our ruck stocks have not improved ( bar Jolly who is a wonderful competitor) because we allow our rucks to be part time coached.

It's long been an issue. We brought Jimmy Barnes in this season as a ruck coach (not too sure if it was part or full time) so at least the club has recognised the issue. It really is concerning when you have stories of Darren Jolly calling up his old Sydney ruck coach for advice. We should have someone at the club capable of that.

P.S. Welcome to the board!! Really enjoyed your Daics post in the other thread!!

Hey Witty. The mail is in the envelopes ready to be delivered in the next 40 hours. Bit going around in terms of rumours. Hey Dave where did you hear about Collingwood speaking with West's manager?

I only saw That we might be Chasing West on the Herald Sun Article

When does the trade period end? With such a short amount of time left you'd think it'd be hard for us to get a deal done.

In terms of rucks, I don't reckon that the coaches are to blame for the fact that we haven't developed a good one since Monky. They haven't had anything to work with. Fraser, Richards and Fanning were too skinny and lacked aggression. McKee was too short for somebody without a leap, ditto Bryan. Wood has never become strong enough or aggressive enough - you can't really blame the coaches for that. I think that it has been a recruitment issue. I personally think that Hine and Judkins before him felt that teh ruck position was going to become one dominated by excellent athletes with good bigman skills, rather than by guys with traditional big man skills. Thus we've recruited the wrong player type.

West is a decent option as a backup, but you don't want to overpay for backups. Pick #21? Laughable.
