I know most people understand the situation, but just to be clear for anyone still wondering, in practical terms, the 'courtesy' reason given for accepting a late draft pick that you won't use [obviously, in his case we've passed it on to Carlton] is to allow the player [Youngy] to get directly onto another club's list today, rather than waiting, worrying or training by himself etc.

Also, with rookie lists, it might be an upgrade pick [Williams?] rather than used on another new player.

He doesn't have the pace to be a really reliable small defender in my mind. I think he needed to make it as an inside midfielder myself and he probably had a bit too much competition and a few limitations to his game to make a big impact here.

Trading Young for a draft pick we probably won't use makes no sense unless Tom has asked to leave the club for a better opportunity at playing senior football elsewhere.

If he has asked to leave, it's strange that it's happened so late in the trade period.

Not a massive loss either way, interesting to see what draft pick the Dogs give us, anything after 48 will not be used by us.

I think there is another explanation that fits too. To me it seems like we want to use our picks (x5) inside the top 50 but are perhaps looking at bringing in a mature player in addition to this. It lends weight to the Russell rumour IMO.

And potential is all it was at this stage. He still in essence played more naturally as an outside player but without the decision making, skills or pace to make him dangerous in that role. His body shape, his lack of pace, ball winning ability and a few glimpses here and there were more the indicators that that would be his most suited role. It was these conflicting characteristics which probably meant we were happy to move him on. That makes him sound really ordinary but he does have some things to work with. I just find him hard to place him.
