Essendon with in the next couple of years will bring a away strip that will be predominately silver with bits of red and black. With merchandise sales going to be a big part off clubs income.2 jumpers will sell more then 1 so it is common sense.

No problem with me as long as it doesn't clash with the other teams "home" jumper. If you're going to create a brand new jumper, it is a pointless exercise unless it distinguishs itself from those teams whose colours clash.

There is a passage in the Essendon constitution that states that Essendon CANNOT change their colours unless it is voted on by the members of the club. So adding silver wouldn't be as easy as it sounds. There would HAVE to be a vote first. There is no way around it.

I reckon that sounds really crappy! Why do Essendon have to change their jumper? I don't think it's an incredibly exciting jumper, but I think the silver included in the away jumper will look really tacky...

Anyways, Essendon's jumper doesn't clash with anyones, so why do they have to change it?

Only if you've got eye-sight problems.
I have no problem seeing the difference between Essendon and Melbourne, nor Essendon and St. Kilda.

BTW, my 100th post. Pretty piss-weak effort actually, considering I've been posting for a few months. Oh well, I'll try harder from now on

If it's true, you Bomber fans have to do everything you possibly can to stop it. Tradition is something to be valued, and you're lucky to have such a long and successful. Hopefully you guys have an admin that realises this fact....... unlike others.

Well with foxtel and channel 9 and 10 with the tv rights.I bet they would like teams to have jumpers on you can tell who is who.I have watched many games on TV and live and it's a absolute disgrace that it's hard to tell who is who, especially when the camera is a long way from the action.I can't think of one other pro league that doesn't have alternate strips.Maybe one day the AFL and the fans will wake up and demand it.I'd like to see that.

Prefer no change.

Aussie Rules has to be close to the only the football code that is still lucky enough not to implement away strips.

Local clubs, changing from league to league in the forties and fifties etc, were often forced to change their colours because they were the same as a club already listed in the new league. Luckily, the foresight was there to choose traditional colours on most occasions, rather than some of the dodgy stuff seen in other codes.

Vees, monograms, sashes, yokes, stripes and hoops, panels ... those are grouse, because they were.

Honestly, fashion is a pain in the neck. It should have no bearing.

If the colours clash, so be it. Don't do anything about it. Practice some good old aussie apathy.

I know i won't be voting to change it. Couldn't possibly see our members voting for it.

I am interested to know what age bracket you are in. I am not having a go at your age, just curious as I have found that most of the people calling for changes to jumpers have been under 18.
I feel this is because you have been brought up on TV sport which is very commercialised and have no real understanding of the history of our great game.
We are not Americans, they change their sports purely for the holy dollar. I for one don't want to see that happen to Aussie Rules.
Once again I am not having a go at the younger supporters, just voicing my observations.
Cheers

I think it's us Australians that change sports for the holy dollar.

In the USA you don't see teams have sponsors logos adorning their jersey's, they don't change their jumpers for a "one-off" match for a fee and they don't put a sponsors logo on the official ball they use.

Sandie i am 24.I am not trying to change tradition for the sake of it.I'm trying to do it for the benefit of the fans.Just imagine when you have failing eye sight. How hard would it be to see who is on your team.Maybe that's why you see very few older people at games.I am a traditionalist at heart. But it's just like saying save the mcg members stand. What for? When you can upgrade facilities and get more people in the ground. You have to make changes sometimes for the game to go forward.Just like they have new rules every year.
If one person can give me one good excuse not for a change of strip if there is a colour clash other then tradition then i may change my mind. But not one good excuse has been put forward yet.
But you have to like the AFL solution to the problem so far-just wear white shorts if your the away team, except if your Hawthorn.Mr Jackson the problem is the jumpers, not the shorts you idiot.
Also i go for Carlton.Do you think i would like to see Carlton in a differant jumper? No way.But if it helps me enjoy the game more because i can identify the teams alot easier then i'm all for it.

I must admit that I would prefer that teams stay with their old jumpers but like the drop kick and the torpedo I think that time has past.

I'm not sure but I would think that the corporate sponsors connected to the board and the board members would have nearly 60% of voting rights at most clubs. There has been several problems at different clubs that have gone to a members vote and people have been surprised to find out they weren't qualified to vote.

So if it came to a vote the board would already have the numbers but to avoid that I believe they'll trial an away jumper. Trial it for a season or two and break down any resistance to change. It's not permanent so it doesn't have to go to a vote.

Essendon in 2000 had 34,000 members, of course not all these are of voting age, and in 2001 they expect more, there is no way 60% of members will vote for a jumper change, i actually asked someone today about it and they said it was 80%, but im confident its 60%, does anyone know the actualy figure?
