An interesting one. tough for the umps to spot on the day but perhaps a club fine for it occurring. nothing major but should not occur.

Not sure. He was trying to attend to a clearly injured player with a head injury, so in that respect he has a right to get to the player as quickly as possible. Maybe the umpire could have called the free kick back and waited until the player and the runner were out of the way, but it would be harsh to punish someone for interference in those circumstances.

If it was medical staff - then absolutely not.
If the umps genuinely think interference has occurred - then a ball up should be the obvious outcome.
However, no game is more important then a dr rushing to a player he thinks might have snapped his neck
He should have known however it was Monfries playing dead

Haha Monfries totally takes a look at the incoming runner and times his hand pass to perfection
I wonder if there is a clause in the rules for a situation like this. Are there separate rules for runners/trainers/medical staff? If not then it should have been a free kick but I can understand the umpire not paying it. If there is a rule/clause for medical staff they should adjust it so that this can't happen (just make them retake the free kick, a ball up isn't necessary).
I think the umpires would be instructed to call time off if they see medical staff in a position that could interfere with play but in this case the trainer came sprinting in and he might not have seen him. The Port trainer is probably at fault but it did look like a potentially serious head injury.

I noticed the runners get in the way of play at least four times in this game yesterday.

The shortest solution is to ping the offending team with a free kick against.

He was getting up and clearly looking to handball off, yet the medico still ran in and performed a good shepherd. If he was KO on the ground then medical staff can run in.

No, the West Coast should not be penalized for what happened with the trainer. The trainer is their for the player welfare and are their for the players if they need immediate help on the field after getting injured. A trainer should not have to wait until play has stopped to assist the player.
However, runners are a different story. They continuously get in the way of play and are useless considering how often players can go to the bench and receive messages from the coach. Runners should not be allowed IMO.

cool, so why don't we have trainers/doctors standing in different zones around the ground. then they can get there even quicker!
It was obvious he was fine, the trainer had no need to be running in then when Monfries was so obviously fine and looking to dish the ball off.

Runners should be banned, trainers only allowed on the field when umpire gives permission.
Okay, banned might be a bit much cap the messages 5 per qtr or only allowed on the ground after a goal.

What are the rules governing runner behaviour and interference?
Curious as Nick Davis for the Swans gets away with on field coaching and lengthy periods on the ground a fair bit. On the weekend he basically set them up for a kick in and had a position himself.
Other runners probably do it but he stands out to me.
