Running bounce 15m vs Paid mark 15m

Do they hand the umps 2 different tape measures?
All teams do this so it is not a bias thing, more so all these 10m kicks being paid marks is dead set ugly and slow.

Start making them kick it the full 15.

My personal favourite inconsistency.
Honestly the league should just change rule for the kick to 10m and the bounce to 25m as it is actually interpreted to save the embarrassment.

They paid one Friday night actually. The hawks player (gunston maybe?) ran 3 of those lawn cut marks which are 9m wide. So he ran 27m before the ump decided he'd run too far.

They shouldn't get rid of it. It's a skill to run and bounce the ball. They need to sort it out though. OP is spot on in the ridiculousness of the rules.

You wouldn't be as upset if a 17-19 meter pass was paid and it would be easier to penalize a 22 meter gallop as it is obvious to the eye .

One of the games this weekend (GC v Richmond maybe?), One player kicks it very short to another player, paid the mark, kicks it straight back... Not 15?

Penalised Collingwood and cost them a goal for not kicking 15m on Friday night, but then the 10m kicks became acceptable after that...

Agree with this, players are chipping 10m passes across the backline like its soccer without being pinged for it

The need to bounce was removed for Clayton Oliver at one point today....very nice kick at the end of his run as well

It seems umpires start off with a basic knowledge of free kicks and then pick the rest up as they go along. Surely the umpire would have known it was too far because he was running along side him. I think some of the Melbourne players even had their arms outstretched as well appealing for a free kick to be paid.

First game? By the time someone umpires their first AFL game they’ll have done about 300 or so games of umpiring, it’s no excuse

As opposed to a 20 metre run or a 24 metre run.... It's all guess work, thats the fundamental problem with a lot of the AFL rules.

All the players have GPS trackers, throw one on the ball as well, easily done. Beep when a kick gives over 15m, different beep when a player runs 15m, umpire to track the ball bounce. Player tracker goes off when in close proximity of ball & over 5km/h movement.

Years ago (April fools segment shot at Junction Oval), they were having trouble with umpires hearing the siren so Channel 7 did a report on putting a small bomb in the ball. When the siren went, the bomb went off and the ball blew up. If it was on it's way to scoring, bad luck, ball blew up.

Bit harder to do with the 15 metre rule but a bloody good idea. Run too far - Ball blows up. Get tackled, don't get rid of it - Ball blows up. Ball crosses goal line - Ball blows up. Umpire bounces ball badly - Umpire blows up.

They have two different tape measures for paying a mark, let alone these two rules. There was a point in North v Saints last week where we had a kick in from a behind. Tarrant kicked the ball out, barely 15m, but it was paid a mark. He then didn't move, got the ball kicked back to him and that was deemed not 15.

Simple solution is if the umpire suspects a player has run 15 metres plus without a bounce is to blow the whistle to halt play and go up to the video ump for an adjudication. Should only take about 15-30 seconds to get a ruling and put it on the scoreboard. Play then resumes from where the player was when the ump blew his whistle. I mean getting it right is paramount isn't it?

For those of you squawking that the current video reviewers need to visit SpecSavers fear not, the proposed Bunker will solve this. While the AFL are loathe to be critical of any of the 9 reviewers who perform each week, there is basically no chance that they'll ever say a Bunker decision was a mistake, and you can quote me on that.

What about kicking out from full back? This Port player ran all this way without bouncing before kicking it. Given each mowing 'stripe' is at least 10m wide he's run 15m past the point post.

Might as well just get rid of the bounce, it's completely irrelevant the way the game is adjudicated today.

Don't get me wrong, I love the bounce, but it unfortunately isn't part of the game except in theory.

15m marks change depending on how far you are from goal. Defending, it seems to be around 15-20. In the forward 50, closer to 8-10m.

You've got it all wrong...

You can run 15 fathoms before you need to bounce the ball. A kick must travel 15 cubits (a bit less closer to goal, as noted directly above).
