Meanwhile, the signs are encouraging for Courtney Johns after he completed a running session on Monday. Johns didn’t play at all last season after battling a serious hip injury.

"That's pretty pleasing for that young man who has been out of footy for a year-and-a-half and he's pretty happy with himself," Sheedy said.

great to hear johnsy is up and running. has been running in a harness to reduce the load bearing component for a while now so hopefully he can get right and get amongst it. dont barrack for the bombers but id love to see the kid up and going and then all those who bag long term injuries tonguing bags and taking back all the ill informed crap they spout

Went to training tonight and dear me, you can tell he hasnt been able to run for 1.5 years because he is massively built in the upper-body, big kid but he's really defined in the upper-body. Was just doing kicking on the side with David Hille and went off the ground 30 minutes in but..."he was looking good".

I think he's back in about 5 weeks? But who knows probably the year.

the reports might say he's 4 weeks off playing, but he'll just start off with a quarter or so at Bendigo. Has started sprinting now - Harvs said he's really surprised at how well he's coming along! Will head along to training on Wednesday and do some more "research" ;)

I dare say he would probably start in the Bendigo Reserves.
I don't think a VFL reserves game will have ever had so much focus.

Essendon will consider promoting promising youngster Courtney Johns directly into the seniors when the 20-year-old is ready to play next month after a chronic hip injury.

Johns has been at Windy Hill since being drafted by the Dons in 2002, but has only managed a handful of games for the Bendigo Bombers in 2003.


The youngster from East Fremantle suffered a freak injury during his draft year when his left thigh bone was driven into his hip socket during a match. Some doctors and specialists who examined him thought he may never walk again, let alone play football.

Essendon has stuck by the key position prospect and believes he is more advanced now than at any other stage during his three years at the club. He is listed to be ready to play in four weeks.

Coach Kevin Sheedy indicated that Johns would be slotted straight into the seniors as the Bombers go about giving the right youngsters match experience.

"If Courtney Johns can get through, he'll definitely be coming into the side," Sheedy said.

"As soon as he looks like he can play footy and train him up … one of the coaches said he's not a long way off now.

"We need to sort of have a look at that because he's a pretty exciting player.

"I rate him pretty highly amongst all the top kids that have been drafted in the last three years. I rate him up there with them in the top ten.

"But he's got to get there - sort of like Essendon's next win - we've got to try and find it."

The most recent surgery for Johns was to remove a piece of floating bone from his hip last May.

In March he was able to run on grass for the first time in almost a year and he has been predominantly been doing skills work in the last few months.
