Actually Taxi driver's are paid by commission, they get half of each fare they take so they are the victims.
I don't know how it works in Adelaide, but, in Sydney, taxi drivers don't even get a commission.
Instead, the drivers have to pay to rent the taxi for the duration of their shift. They only start making money on their shift once they've earned enough to cover the rent of the taxi for the night (as well as fuel).
So if some obnoxious little **** takes a 40-minute taxi ride, then runs off without paying, the taxi driver doesn't just miss out on the fare - they actually lose money out of their own pocket. They've paid for the privilege of driving some drunk kid home.
This is why they'll be angry enough at cab-bolters to consider running them over with their car.
