just a pity some people can't handle being (possibly) beaten by him.
Hannebery didn't blow him up. He was getting goal side of him in the first half and was able to get away long enough to take shots on goal. Crowley changed tactics after half time and stopped that. Not sure what Roos was saying but go and watch the game. Hannebery got 4 goals on him but all in the first half and in my view, that was due to not having the best tactics.

The anticipation is Ablett Snr esque....I'm expecting fireworks.
Yeah, I can't believe all the attention he is getting, as if he was our most important player. There's a few other blokes on our team like Fyfe, Barlow, Mundy, Hill, Walters that deserve more attention from the opposition coach than worrying about a tagger.
Not sure if scared is the right word - but we're way too pre-occupied with it.
Crowley is a tagger - he'll do his best to stop someone (probably mitchell). Mitchell is a playmaker, he'll be doing his best to beat his tagger. If we lose this contest then we really only have two sensible choices:
- play through someone else so Ross has to rethink matchups
- block and shepherd in the packs like WCE used to do for Judd all the time
The violence approach is dumb, really dumb. It hardly ever works. Here are a few examples of old-school thuggery in the modern game:
Alistair Lynch goes postal: team loses
J Brown in 2004 GF punches Josh Carr in the head at the bottom of a pack: team loses
TD knocks out Gavin Brown in the 1990 GF: team loses
Mark Yeats tries to take out Brereton 1989: team loses
Non GF games
Hawks draw a line in the sand: team loses
Dean Solomon takes out Cameron Ling: team loses
There are probably a lot more examples, but these are the ones that first came to mind. The two notable exceptions are Lloyd cleaning up Sewell and Barry Hall KO'ing the west coast bloke.

I think both sides are being a bit precious. Nobody's going to run through anybody at any stage, in a premeditated fashion. I think any commentator suggesting it just beong colorful.
It just doesn't happen. What's the idea of it? To put somebody out of the game?? It'd have to be a bloody perfectly executed, probably 1 in 1000 bump or shirtfront to inflict that sort of injury.
All it's going to do is make the target and his teammates more determined. When has it ever actually been done and gone anyway to winning a game? Coaches aren't that dumb.
Think the only time you'd try it is if you were significant underdogs with basically zero chance of winning, then you might do it in the hope of putting them off their game. I don't think the Hawks consider themselves that.

He's only won if the hawks are giving him that attention. The amount of newspaper speak means nothing in terms 'winning' anything.
I'll agree with you if the hawks try and 'rough him up' and end up giving away free kicks, 50m penalties and getting suspended.
Any merit to the idea of him shutting down an outside player like Isaac Smith rather than Sam Mitchell, ie restrict Hawthorn's run and carry somewhat? I'm going on the idea of clubs often letting Jobe do his thing but putting a hard tag on Stanton (who has struggled against them in the past). In the same way, Mitchell would be quite used to a tag whereas I am not so sure about Smith.
Smith has been tagged a lot in the last half of the year.
Although we'd love him to have lots of the ball he tends to stil have a huge impact just by spreading the oppositions zone as he runs from one side of it to the other. I'd much prefer Freo to tag Smith.
Yeah, it seems the obvious thing to start with would be put him on Mitchell, as Steve Johnson and Kieran Jack are two pretty big scalps so far this finals series. Maybe it's just a wait-and-see approach. Start him on Mitchell, ie the 'source' of the footy, but if someone else is getting off the leash he can always be moved. He didn't go onto Johnson until after a 2-goal, 12-touch 1st quarter by the Cat either.

One counter example - Wallis cleans up Mil Hanna 1993 GF.
But that's about the sole example. I remember David King cleaning up a Swans bloke in 1996, but I'm not sure that was premeditated or behind play - I think it was in a legitimate contest.
As for who Crowley tags - Jordan Lewis is my bet. Gets as many I50s as Mitchell, more dangerous around goal, probably easier to tag.
Barlow or Suban might be told to follow around Mitchell.

I heard Mooney saying Hawthorn should target Crowley and virtually take him out. I don't think you can pull stunts like that any more. The double points in a grand final thing is a killer too - just ask Terry Daniher.
The problem with pre-meditated violence is that is sends emotions through the roof on both sides, as one side retaliates to the sight of their teammate getting hit and the other team retaliates to the retaliation. For a lot of players, once this stuff starts, it can take them a long time to cool down and get their head back in the game. And a lot can happen in the meantime. Often you see late bumps or scuffles behind the play that result in 50s / downfield frees, both of which are utterly deflating for the offending team.
I think in this scenario, both Freo and Hawthorn back themselves in and neither see themselves as massive underdogs, so as someone mentioned earlier, I can't see either team trying to bring the other 'back to the pack' with these kinds of pre-meditated tactics.
As an aside, does anyone know Crowley's efficiency % last week? He had 22 touches and kicked a goal, correct? Not bad for a 'scragger'.

It's hilarious how you think we are taking Crowley seriously. We have been to the Grand Final many many times my friend. We aren't stupid enough to focus all our attention on a tardy little stopper. Win each of our positions and Crowley's role becomes null and void. Same as spuds like Dawson, Clarke and Duffield.
You are in your first Grand Final. Fremantle is much more likely to make stupid errors of judgement given the situation. Hawthorn won't fall in to this half assed trap of focusing on a tagger.

Have you seen Clarke play against Hawthorn? Lol. Maybe it's just against us but he is next to useless. Happy if we direct a lot of ball through his direct opponent.
