Farren Ray has a huge turn of pace and runs like lightening over 100m. His intial excelleration speed is easily going to rate as one of the fastest and quickest in the league when he starts carrying the ball.

Thats great, but its his disposal that is the problem, ATM.

I agree with macca23 in that I would choose Tenace over Ray, but I still think Ray will be a good player. He probably won't every have a body like Riccuito's but he is a pretty gutsy player, and with his speed he should be a quality player - if he can iron out the kinks in his kicking.

I think Ray has more drive than Tenace, and that is what should give him the edge. Tenace should be a quality midfielder, but I think Ray is a playmaker.

I doubt Griffen would slip out of the top #5, and I really doubt he'd slip past #7 as for him to be available at #7 would mean that Hawthorn already had picked up at least one tall and would be looking for a midfielder.

Fair enough, but you said that I "seriously underrate" Ray.

All I said was that I was surprised that Ray was taken before Tenace, as I rated Tenace above Ray - as you did yourself.
I wasn't surprised that Bulldogs took Ray over Tenace. Nothing surprising about that at all. WB rated Ray VERY highly. In fact they rated him so much that they considered using #1 pick on him.

I classifeid my rating of the top 4 based on what the clubs were after. Once Carlton took Walker, I was certain Ray would be picked up before Tenace.

Stiffy, I have to put my hand up and say that I was one of those that didn't rate Ray as high as many others, and to be honest, I still haven't changed my mind.

I might be proven wrong, but I'd rather have Tenace rather than Ray, purely on the physical ability to play at AFL level, rather than skills etc.

Ray is at a genuine disadvantage due to his very light physique - he'll certainly need those pre-seasons in the gym that you're talking about.

Tenace doesn't suffer in this manner and is more capable of making an immediate contribution as a result.

He's already shown that he's going to be a very good player, while at this stage Ray can only promise to be.

I would have taken Tenace if I had been choosing.
It depends which way you look at it.

If you want someone who can step up and play few AFL games straight away, then you would go for Tenace. I rate Ray higher based on his potential. Ray, once he beefs up will be a better player than Tenace IMHO. If I was to pick for the long term, I would go with Ray. Otherwise, I would go with Tenace.

Give me Cooney or Sylvia over those 2 any day of the week and twice on sundays ;)

Are we talking about the same Ray???????

I thought his disposal was VERY good

My recollection is that the last years top four went as everyone expected.

Melbourne taking McLean ahead of Tenace at five may have been slightly surprising, but not overly.

i agree stiffy the kid is a gun, maybe the 2nd coming of simon black, he is silky smooth and probably doesnt need a body like riccuito with the way he plays football, just needs to get a tad more solid and that will do him!

From what I've seen of him (very little) and read (a lot), he tends to kick whilst unbalanced when he is on the run. Its almost as if he is too fast for his own good, and ends up nearly kicking from behind himself, which results in a lot of hang-time.

He should be a quality player though, no doubt.

I certainly don't think he was a waste of a pick, I simply thought Tenace would go before him.

But lets just concentrate on using telepathic power and convince the powers-that-be at Richmond, Hawthorn and the Dogs to pass over Griffen. ;)

Ommmmmm....
