Pick 47 in the 2009 National Draft

Matt Burgan's Phantom Draft

41 - NORTH MELBOURNE - Ryan Harwood
DOB: 08/07/91, Height: 183cm, Weight: 81kg
Recruited from: Glenorchy/Tassie Mariners (TAS)
Draft range: 22-53

It's believed Harwood is on North Melbourne's radar, having spent time at Arden St during his AIS-AFL Academy stint. The leading clearance player in this year's under-18 championships, Harwood was rewarded with All-Australian selection. A genuine inside midfielder, he also has excellent agility. West Coast and St Kilda have also been touted suitors. Oakleigh Chargers' Jamie Macmillan is another genuine North Melbourne candidate.

Graham Hadley

“Ryan Harwood was an All-Australian under-18 carnival player. Rarely plays a bad game. Nice hard boy and well skilled. We think he’ll fit into Michael’s game plan very comfortably.”

From Inside Football -

RYAN HARWOOD – Defender, Tassie Mariners, Tas
DOB: 8/7/91 Ht:184cm Wt:80kg
“Ryan won the clearances in the under 18 competition and that’s his go – he’s a pure inside ball winner. He was second in the agility testing at the draft camp. Has had a few off-field things that he’s been working on and he’s getting much better in that area in terms of his application, and he really wants to be a footballer. He’s one who would really benefit from being in an AFL environment. Plays midfield and can kick goals, has perfect skills and is very hard at it. He’s a simple player in that he just goes hard at it and I think he was in the top two or three for the kicking test at draft camp.” – AFL Tasmania high performance manager Nick Probert.
Tasmanian representative 2009. All-Australian 2009. AIS-AFL academy graduate. From Glenorchy FC.

Pluses- a Tasmanian, an in-and-under, good kick, tough [would have to be, being from Glenorchy]

But what is it about this left-foot thing and the Lions?

I remember our school cricket team being addressed by the late Allan McGilvray who opined that few left handers made the Test grade- they just weren't orthodox enough. How times have changed

My take on Harwood from my mock:

Ryan Harwood (Tassie Mariners, TAS)
Height: 184cm, Weight: 79kg, DOB: 08/07/91

For some reason over the last few years teams have marked down the Taswegians and they have been taken lower than I and others expected. Robinson, Cornelius, Collier and certainly Joseph all were taken lower than I think was warranted based on talent and performance and for the most part they should each have caused the recruiters to reconsider why they have been marking down these guys. For that reason it is going to be interesting to see where Harwood goes as despite having a good few quality strengths he also has quite a few holes in his arsenal which could cause him to fall. First the good, he is a very good in and under player who wins plenty of contested possessions. He is aggressive in the contest and attacks with good physical intensity. He also brings the physical side to his defensive work. He is a good tackler and he finishes his tackles off well. He is a guy who thrives on the physical aspects of the contest and will love the step up to the AFL. He has good, quick hands in close and he takes consistently good options feeding the ball out from contested situations. He holds his feet well in the contest and moves well in contested situations. At Camp he did very well in the kicking test apparently and it is interesting that his disposal skills are probably the biggest knock on him. Like quite a few of the top prospects this year on the park he has been seen to miss too many targets and can lack penetration. His good test results might cause a few teams to reconsider on this issue. Combine his kicking though with below par athleticism and you have some decent sized question marks over him as an AFL player. Personally I see him making it. He is a footballer and his inside talent is something which sets him apart from all but a few available this year. He has shown great improvement over the last year and had a very good Champs this year. He averaged 21.4 disposals a game, 5.6 clearances (best in the Champs) and 4 tackles per game. According to his coach he has had some “off field issues” which he has worked through and he is a guy who his coach believes will really benefit from being in an AFL environment. If you are in need of an in and under you could definitely do worse than Harwood.

Off-field 'issues' run down....

Harwood, 18, has also had off-field issues this year, after being suspended by Glenorchy from it's first final for breaking a club alcohol ban.

He also appeared in the Hobart Magistrate's Court for abusing a police officer and possessing an open container of alcohol in public.

He pleaded guilty to both counts but no conviction was recorded.

"Clubs take everything into account overall about any young player, whether it is their physical attributes, their performance on the board or any other issues that present themselves," Sheehan said.

"It is just part of making sure a guy is prepared for the full-time fish bowl the AFL can be.

"I'm certain Ryan will get his chance. He's a terrific young kid who has worked very hard at his game over the past couple of years and we are seeing the resultant benefit of that in the way he presented at the national under-18s.

"Young men do have various challenges along the way. They are human and do make some errors.

"People are prepared to accept that providing they learn from their failings and move on from there."

Sheehan also rated North Hobart's running defender Marcus Davies and Launceston ruckman/key forward Joseph Groenewegen as likely draftees.

Sounds like something 18 year old boys do in a moment of stupidity.

Hope he learned from it.

Very happy we got Harwood with our second pick as he gives that inside midfield grunt and clearance winning ability we need.

Pick 47: Brisbane Lions – Ryan Harwood
Height: 184cm - Weight: 79kg - DOB: 08/07/91

Bio: His inside work in the contests is very good, his clearance work is his standout feature, good attack on the ball, and quick hands as well as smarts allow him to win lots of clearances. He has racked up some big numbers this year, and he generally uses the ball well although his outside work is reasonable, yet he finds the majority of the ball inside. There have been doubts on his kicking, yet IMO it is not that bad and he hits most targets, although most of his kicks are under pressure, it still could use some work. Athletically he is just average, his pace is all right, and he won’t get caught but no quick enough to break the lines, and his endurance needs improvements. He is also defensively very good and will lay strong tackles and blocks, as well as this he can also shut an opponent down. He is very hard at the ball and his determination alone will win him clearances. His marking is also good, but will not standout at AFL IMO, as it is not brilliant, and as it is a higher standard. He is similar to Tuck IMO, but with potentially better skills and pace.

Young Harwood on song
By Stu Warren

RYAN Harwood is the type of footballer who just loves to win.

Be it matches for his club side Glenorchy or the Tasmania Under 18s, in one-on-one contests for the ball or in getting the best of an opponent, the tough redhead has a competitive streak that's plain to see.
