Forgive my ignorance, but what is the story with Ryan Jackson?

Is he not being played due to injury, or form? I really like Jackson, and think he was developing into a good player; he done a lot of 1%ers at times. I had/have high hopes for him. Is it simply Ratten rathers Russell in the side? (I make this comparrison as I would assume these two would be fighting for the same place).

I would take out Browne/Wiggins at the moment for him, I rate him highly. Can someone give an update as to why he is not playing/his form in the vfl if he is not injured.

Cheers.

He broke his hand in Round 2 vs St Kilda IIRC and has struggled to find good form in the Ants since, hence why he hasn't been called up to the Senior team.

I was a fan as well. Impressed me last year with some hard running games on the likes of Harvey but really hasn't set the world on fire unfortunately. In his defence, he has been unlucky with injuries...

He hurt himself in the round 1 match vs Richmond and hasn't returned to the seniors since.

I also am a fan, he was looking to cement his spot in the senior team, but has struggled to come back.

Hopefully he works himself back into the side in the 2nd half of the season. We need a tagger, and as good as Banno was early on, we also need to develop another.

My guess is maybe Russell is physically stronger and is used to tag at times but as far as use of the ball and getting ability Jackson is a superior player Russell is lucky to be getting picked injuries are the main reason he is in.

Jackson will be back!

I rate him really highly as a player and has had a couple of unlucky hand injuries. One was against St.Kilda in the opening minutes in early 2006-7 I believe.

Yeah, I'm a big fan of Jackson's as well.
Keeps breaking the (Metacarsal? Metacarpal?) bone in his hand. Did it in his 2nd/3rd match of AFL footy and again in the reserves this year.
Reminds me of Stevens sort of.

I'm a fan as well, but I feel he might need to show something in the second half of the year. I'm just not sure where he fits into our 22, given the emergence of Armfield and Brown this year, and with quite a few mids already in front of him. Also,if he was going to be turned into a tagger, he'd be behind Banno and Hadley at the minute.

i too rate young ryan. I think ratts rates him highly, but this week was his first game back in the 2's since his injured hand. He did well, hard at the footy, great footy smarts, good in close, incredible engine. His downside is his speed and his use of the ball at times is questionable. For the first time in a while we have a genuine prospect that cant get a run. If he had come about 2 years ago, he would have established himself by now. IMO we havent seen the last of ryan, but unless there are injuries, its hard to see where we could fit in another slowish midfielder. Looks like injuries could be his only chance as the likes of pfeiffer, grigg, armfield and browne seem to be ahead in the pecking order.

Thanks for the responces guys, seemed he had suddenly dissapeared off the radar, but nice to be updated :thumbsu:

Hopefully he gets a chance later this year, or at least gets another year. Would hate to see a recurring injury be his downfall, when there have been many promising signs.

Yes he did get injured in the VFL this year and I think has recently come back. As far as I know he usually plays on the ball in the Ants.

IMO he isn't big and strong enough for AFL yet, he is going to have to put on weight then do a lot of hard running so his legs adjust. If this is the case and all goes well it might take him until half way through next season to have the size, strength, endurance and speed to be successful at AFL.

I really like Jackson too. He has all the skills that you could ask from an AFL footballer. I'd be happy to see him play VFL all year and focus on the aspects of fitness he needs to work on rather than the football.

We would be crazy to get rid of him but unless we lose some midfielders this year I don't think he'll play AFL this year.
