Well said.

Lonie is a superb kick and a great athlete, and the coach recognises this and continues to play him. Rightfully so.

He will never be a 'ball extractor' or a heavy hitter....It makes me laugh even thinking about it.:)

Good on ya Lones....Kick some big goals this year son!!

yeah I don't put my body on the line much when i play and that doesn't mean i'm a bad player!! Oh, wait... bad example...:(

Lonie had his best season last year. He improved big in certain areas of his game especially tackling and yes even hard ball gets but those waned after the midpoint of the season. He showed he could play a bit on the midfield and as a run with player against the tall midfielders like Goodes and Embley.

Are we too hard on him? I like the way he plays, but he seems to lack the motivation to tackle someone. He just runs next to them. Thoughts?

Dynamite boot from outside 50... one of the best in the league, but unwillingness to strongly contend even a bit suggests he may be a little light on substance in the speedo department.

Correct. And as a result of having a good year, I dont see too many posters on BF bagging him like in the past. He's another who finally has a chance to show his true potential. For the first time in 5-6 years, I am not going to call him "trade bait".

BTW as well as spending time in the midfield I also think he has potential to play key position in defence (depending on match-ups)

Yes we are. He's not the worst player on the list. For an outside midfielder he's not entrusted to go in and win the hard ball. He's a finisher and has brilliant skills by foot; And he's showed he could play on the likes of Adam Goodes as a run with player, as Jabso explained. Unfortunately, he will always be picked out when we lose because he relies on other players around him to win the hard ball, for that's the way things have gone.

Massive year For Lonie the Frankston Boy!

Good to see he still sharts himself when there is a hard contest involved. And this is coming from a fella who played a lot of footy with him at Dandenong.

I dunno if its the excitment of being a fan but everyone seems to mention him as a tagging wingman or a backman. But what about the most exciting part of his game? Easy goals from 55-60 metres out!

I cannot stress this enough, but Lonie's best position is as an attacking winger or a HFF-er. He can be one of the most damaging attacking outside wingers at this club and even in the AFL. He has a deadly deadly left foot and give him the footy anywhere from 50 to 65 metres out and he is more likely to drill it then anyone else on the run.

Instead of always exposing his negatives and trying to improve other areas of his game, its time we start using his positives on a more consistent basis. We dont need defenders anymore. So use Lonie as a very damaging attacking player, because thats he will do an excellent job at it.

Can you carry these blokes these days that can only play outside. He has no defensive part of his game and doesn't win a lot of ball.

Last year he improved massively in those areas.

As for being a HFF he is a shocking forward.

I would play a bloke with bad disposal that hits the contest and gives 100% efforts rather than a bloke who uses the ball well but is not hard enough to get it.

I wouldn't, look at Davies. As long as Lonie get's it, by hook, or by crook, it doesn't matter. He did that for most of last year.

You guys cant be serious.

Jimmy summed it up perfectly.

Lonie might not be the toughest player around. But neither is Didak or Pendles, doesnt make them useless.
Plus he was up there in the top group for hardball gets for the Pies earlier last year, so its not like there arent signs of improvement.

He does not win enough contests to play wing.

I dont think thats a fair statement, Timmy. Buckley was more of an outside player in his early years and was often critised for it. We all know that. How tough is he now? In the last 5-10 years, he became one of the toughest inside players in the AFL. Im not saying Lonie will be the same, Im just saying, outside players are just as valuable and can be just as effective.

It would be a waste to let go of such a beautiful left foot kick. Especially in a side like ours where we dont have the best kickers. We have had a terrible accuracy rating at goal in the last few years. Id rather a Ryan Lonie shooting at goal from 50 then a lot of others. He is very valuable as an attacking outside winger or HFF-er.

Its nothing to do with being tough, my comment is that he does not win the ball enough to play anywhere midfield. He just simply does not get enough possessions. Lonie is best doing what he does - half back flank with a licence to run forward off his opponent.
