It has nothing to do with Brisbane players thoughts on him, lonie was generally soft and I had that opinion before they voted him "toughest" player in the AFL.

He would be better today as the game is softer on the whole and he had a good kick to break open today's zones.

Suffered after his groins started to go (his kicking got shorter, speed diminished) and his admitted to losing some passion after his father passed on (who can blame him?).

I enjoyed his long searching kicks, and hard outside running but by the time he was let go he had been superseded.

He was scared of his own shadow, he was one of the players who was bullied by the then more physical sides.
+1, he was also a loafer, all he had was a long kick. I don't think you could really argue that he didn't have enough chances given how much time he spent on the list.

Cherry-picked, but before rubbishing him for what he couldn't do, try and remember what he _could_. Gee we could use that run, carry and penetration now...

Played 123 games. About right for a player of his talents.
i personally think that without being crippled from op he would have been close to a 200 game player.

i remember when i first saw him play i wanted to get no 37 on my back. Dad said just wait and see, he might not be getting a game next year. I ended up getting buckleys no 5 and was pretty lucky i did in the end i think. Bloke had a fantastic kick, just looking at those highlights posted, thats something we're missing this year. benny J hopefully can bring a little of it back, but marty clarke should be doing that!

I always thought he was harshly treated too. With the way the game is played now, disposal have never been more vital. Further, we have much better midfield depth than when he was playing.
He would be an highly valuable player now and most certainly have a role in a 2012 Collingwood 22.
Regarding the reputation, i would much rather judge what i saw of Ryan than the Brisbane view. An outside player sure, but all good sides can use one or two, particularly with the skill he had.
Brisbane also thought Wakelin was 'vulnerable'.
Still played 120 odd games, did struggle with some groin troubles, given a few different circumstances he could have played 200 games.
FWIW, and it still means something, he was a super bloke too!!

I know we all try to be fair in our assessments of our 'own' i just dont like to read derogatory stuff about our blokes that have solid careers as an AFL footballer. Soft is a derogatory description of a footballer, i think it's overly harsh. He certainly wasnt Scott Burns sure, but he played an important role in our side for quite a few seasons.

What the Brisbane guys did in trying to humiliate him is really not something they should be the least bit proud of. Plenty of other guys in the league who aren't exactly Glenn Archer, then and now.

He was a flat track bully....shirked when the contest got to heated and brought no physicality to our game..the type of player that opposition supporters thrive on hanging shit on us for.

Yes great kick under no pressure but like others said, just not hard enough and if you don't put body on the line you're out!

Still annoys me how this bloke was treated

Anyone else feel that this bloke should have played a lot more games then he did
What did everybody think of Lonie?
Are you kidding? It was players like him that we couldn't take the big one in '02 and '03???

Actually he did go in hard when needed - google 'Ryan Lonie retires' on YouTube and have a look at the clips they have of him. He could tackle and muscle - like people said, he's no Glen Archer but then there's not many that are either.

NT i think he was a great kick under all sorts of pressure, particularly the pressure brought to bear when kicking between the big sticks.
We have had many a great kick struggle under that pressure, as a matter of fact, we still do...
Comment re the grand final losses, he played a pretty good 02 GF. Single him out in the 03 loss, a pretty long queue.

He wasn't hard done by. He looked great early, but never developed. In fact he went backwards. By the end, he was an outside receiver, who got low possession counts and tended to chip the ball sideways despite having a booming kick.

Great early but went backwards? How do you explain 2006 then?
