A good, workmanlike KPP. Does his best work for Hawthorn as a deep target-man, creating a contest and spillage for his small forwards - but that's not his best individual role.

Has given up a hell of a lot of his career for the Hawks, firstly playing as an undersized KPD (when he had a HFF body), then played through ongoing hip and groin injuries as we had no-one else. Has struggled with the aforementioned injuries, which combined with a long-term achilles issue has robbed him of so much mobility and running capacity, but is apparently almost back to full-fitness and we are now seeing him move around the ground a bit better.

Despite this, mentally he's still the tallish-HFF he was before his draft - a fantastic field kick (overall, not just for a KPP) good endurance and workrate, ok mark. If he could play as a leadup CHF or HFF linkman (think the other Tom Lynch) this would be his best role IMO.

Has previously turned down 3yr contracts to leave Hawthorn, despite Hawks offering less $$ and years. Hawthorn (still) need him and with the lack of development of O'Brien, the deterioration of Roughead and Lewis still being 10kg (two seasons) off being competitive I think Hawks should offer him another 2 years, but even a single year contract could be enough to keep him. If Hawks do get the GC Lynch, Ryan may be encouraged to look for a longer offer.

Probably holds value for a pick in the 30s now but expect given his loyalty Hawthorn will let him get to the team of his choice for far less (as we did with Mitchell, Lewis, Hill, etc) - as a FA it's even easier to get him to the team he wants. For the right team he would have significant impact, but most teams would have at least one player of similar age/performance.

Yeah, can't help but think of this is an apologist defence for a very very ordinary footballer.

There's nothing he brings to the table that Tim O'Brien can't.....Which includes softness, inconsistency & less than 10 possessions a game.

O'Brien can play the decoy role just as effectively & can actually also chop out in the ruck.

Has flattered only to deceive now for over a decade.....Papers are well & truly marked.

Schoenmakers is currently a better Key Target forward than Roughead. Structurally, he's probably more important to our chances of winning too.

It's not saying a great deal given Rough's current position but he's still the best we have. Our whole forwardline functions so much better with RS in the side - even in a game when he was well beaten by his opponent. Whether from his own or his team-mates (lack of) confidence, all TO'B did was allow opposition to double team Roughead/Gunston/Breust in the forwardline.

When McEvoy is fit, one of Ceglar/Schoenmakers/Roughead will probably need to go out for "balance". There's probably not enough time to rejig the side for two rucks, so Ceglar may be unlucky, but I am concerned if Shoey does go out, how much flexibility and performance our side will lose from the forwardline.

To say this post strikes me as delusional in the extreme, is to put it mildly.

Schoenmakers has played the last 3 weeks after having missed 15 through both form & injury.....Your claims here, prefaced upon those facts are as spurious as it gets.

He was our worst player on the weekend after one good game & that has been his usual form throughout his sporadic & sparse career to date.

If we land Lynch, along with the encouraging form & development of Lewis, then both Rough & O'Brien are more than adequate back-ups....Surplus to requirements in 2019.

Let's be honest, there were a handful of KPP out of Schoey's draft class that went in the first round including:

Vickery
Mitch Brown
Jack Watts
Schoey
Hurley
Tom Lynch (Adelaide)

Not many of them have been worth much of anything, save for Lynch and Hurley. If Schoenmakers had been played at the right end of the ground for his whole career instead of from 2015 onwards, things may have been different for him - but we chucked him in defense, he messed up his knee and the rest is history.

Like Watts he offers value as a decoy forward, third tall and a player who can kick the ball as good as anyone. He's probably worth more to us than another club at present moment.

I rated him ahead of Casboult as Stop gap player. Will more likely gave up pick 70+ for him ( Sam Mitchell, Hodge)

Check out the 2015 Grand Final.

Last time a Carlton forward had a good Grand Final was......... ?

lol is right.

wait it's 2015? omg Michael j fox did it!

Someone like Breust or Puopolo would have made the difference for them the last couple of years. Even this year with Green always injured.

So what have Carlton forwards done in the last 3 years other than go to other clubs to win games?

Suns forward line performing well is it?

If you pile shit onto a pile of shit, all you have is a bigger pile of shit.

IF the Suns do get him, they are not getting him to make their forward line perform better, it'll be to merely allow development of their youth.

Oh cool we see what kind of posting you're into now.

It seems Schoenmakers will be this years "the Suns should take him! They suck!" player. Every year.

I wouldn’t wish for anyone to go to GC to be honest.
And I doubt RS will be going there either.
He will stay at Hawthorn next year, but if he did go then somewhere like the Dogs perhaps.....as a FA, or a pick in the 60-70 range if Dogs need to protect any FA compo

Yep id say the suns would be well and truly down the pecking order if Ryan has a change of heart and decides to move on.

Dogs would be my guess as well for a token pick or FA.

O brien cannot take a mark, even when there is no player going with him as the decoy. Sure Schoe isn't a great KPP, but TOB is putrid.

Phil Davis went at 10, has turned into a quality defender. Lewis Johnston at 13 I think as well, although didn’t amount to much.

Off the table .
Great news he chose a 1 year deal to stay last year when offered 3 and more money to go
Great clubman good cheap depth can fill a few holes if needed.
Great kick knows the plan sacrifices his game for the team,

He's 27 & should be at his peak now.....I'm still waiting to see that peak personally.

he has had 2 bad years with injuries the last 2 and another year off with his knee.
Im not expecting him to become a star just a good reliable footballer, what you see is what you get
Tall and mobile, good kick, good tank, big body, knows the plan, can ruck, can play forward and back in a pinch, average mark but brings the ball to ground if he doesnt get it/
