    THE SFA RISING STAR AWARD

The Sweet Football Association has its own award for the best rookie of the season, the EKA, which is announced in the Mobbenfuhrer Medal (SFA B&F) Night.

The SFA Rising Star award is different. It's not only different, but better.

The SFA Rising Star award is carried on by the previous rookie class. It passes on from one rookie class to the next. It is both a way of challenging and mobilizing the sophomores and of involving and promoting the newcomers.

The SFA Rising Star award is weekly based. It is constantly providing standards for the rookies to improve their game, while generating controversy, rivalry, and comradery.

"The SFA Rising Star award was created to recognise the onfield and off-field achievements of the best of these rookies," back in S23. Since then, "the criterion for this award is a combination of on field and off field performance." This has never changed.

The SFA Rising Star award, however, is never the same. The criteria change from one year to the other, as the new organizers try to overcome the past ones – who have just evaluated them.

The S30 SFA Rising Star award respects such foundations and the prize's history. This season, the on-field performance is evaluated in
the "Gun of the Year" award; while the evaluation of the off-field performance is through the "Torch of the Year" award.

The S30 SFA Rising Star award will ultimately combine the two, ranking the rookies and electing the best of them all; who will receive a medal named after
a SFA legend, the eternal rookie sausageroll.

    THE S30 RISING STAR AWARD

    A NOTE FROM THE COMMITTEE

The S29 Rookie Class received the task of organizing and executing the S30 Rising Award and has taken it with a deep sense of duty. The whole project, as it has been done this season, wouldn’t be possible if it was left for only one person to do it.

It all started during the off-season, with a small group of people. The discussions evolved. Slowly, the award began to take shape – even though, truth be told, no one was sure about exactly like it would ended up looking. The group increased in size and became a Committee, those early ideas turned into rules and guidelines, and, when the season started, the S30 Rising Star was set.

Practically all the 13 members of the Committee have been involved in one way or another. We are very thankful for their help. Nonetheless, as the season progressed, there were 7 participants who did most of the hard work: Bastyy, Chipmunk, GWS Goose, Santoz, serial_thrilla, Tonga Bob, and, yours truly, GremioPower (respectively, a Fury, a Hawk, a Gumby, a Bomber, a Dragon, a Warrior, and a Rat).

For 16 weeks, we evaluated rookies’ involvement in each match thread, we looked into how they played every single game, and we voted for the best poster and the best qootballer of the round. We also presented the positions they were fielded, announced those who were running for the Gun (qooty) and the Torch (posting), wrote justifications for our choices, and interviewed the winners and their captains.

We did all of that every single week. This is the most astonishing feature of all, probably. Not only it was a repetitive endeavor that lasted four whole months, which we completed along with our real life obligations, but along the way we also needed to deal with the tensions that any collective enterprise naturally generates. And, oh!, we’ve had our fair share of controversies and fights in the Committee – from the first to the last month.

This effort was in good part motivated by our desire in helping the rookies to understand, enjoy, and get involved into the SFA world. Still, it was more than that. It was through these amazing game and community that we, from the Committee, had the opportunity to meet and to know each other. We would not have accomplished it, if we weren’t among friends.

Our friendship is certainly higher now than it was before the beginning of the season. For that, all the work was worthy. We hope that we managed to pass this sense of comradery to the rookies. After all, once the Award Night is over, it will be their job to carry this Sweet tradition on.

We will announce day and time of the S30 Rising Star Award as soon as we have a definition. Moreover, there are some Special Gun awards to be conferred still. Meanwhile, we may share some numbers about the S30 rookie class on and off the field.

    Thank you all for participating.

    Almost There!

    THE CLUBS' TORCH

    "Hallowed Be Thy Roys!"

The Rising Star Committee appointed a rookie as match-thread winner for all the S30 match-threads, but 2 (which had no post by a rookie at all). If the winner had a grade 5 or 3, he was deemed as a qualified winner.

By the end of the Minor Round no club had more qualified wins than the Roys. Combined, BLUEALLTHRU, RobR, and Supersuns have won 14 of their 16 matches (87.5%). Neither was among the top individual winners, but as a team they were the best!

    NUMBERS ON THE SEASON
    General Stats

The season started with 26 rookies distributed among 10 clubs, and it has ended with 28 in 11.

In total, 30 rookies have participated in the season. Of those, 24 have been listed for the entire season; 4, entered mid-season; and 2 were delisted during the season.

The highest number of rookies listed in the competition was 28 – twice (rounds 9, 16).
The lowest was 26 – five times (rounds 1, 4-7).
In the remaining 9 rounds, the number of rookies was 27.

The Bombers was the club with the most rookies (8); followed by the Dragons (5).
The Royals was the only club without a rookie.
The Demons started with none, but added one (Toump Ass) after R1.
The Bombers (2) and the Wonders (1) have also added rookies to their list mid-season.
The Dragons and the Swamprats were the clubs who have lost rookies before the end of the season (1, each).

    NUMBERS ON THE SEASON
    Gun of the Year

There were 388 times in which a rookie filled a position in the line-ups. In 41 times, rookies were left out of it.

    – LINES
Regarding the lines, midfield was the most popular option:

    MF, 160 (41.2%)
    FW, 139 (35.8%)
    --
    BK, 69 (17.8%)
    --
    IC, 20 (5.2%)

If most Guns (13) were either MF (6) or FW (7), there is a good reason for that. Since for 77% of the time, the rookies played in either one of those. The BK, despite being the third choice, only got 1 award.

    – POSITIONS
Position-wise, W was the most common choice, and it wasn't remotely close:

    W, 94 (24.2%)
    --
    HFF, 53 (13.7%)
    FP, 44 (11.3%)
    HBF, 43 (11.1%)
    --
    CHF, 32 (8.3%)
    C, 29 (7.5%)
    IC, 20 (5.2%)
    --
    RO, 17 (4.4%)
    RR, 13 (3.4%)
    CHB, 11 (2.8%)
    FF, 10 (2.6%)
    BP, 10 (2.6%)
    --
    R, 7 (1.8%)
    FB, 5 (1.3%)

These choices somewhat reflected on the awards, with:

    - 4 being given to players at W (rounds 2, 11-13);
    - 3, to players at FP (rounds 3, 14, 16);
    - 2, at HFF (rounds 1, 7).

The other position with 2 awards wasn't HBF, though, but Headless' favourite position: IC (rounds 4, 15).

    HBF had 1 award (R8), like FF (R5), RR (R6), CHF (R9), and C (R10).

    NUMBERS ON THE SEASON
    Gun of the Year

We proposed that everybody should have a chance at the award, so we've established an adjusting factor for all the positions in qooty. There were 7 different AF. It doesn't mean that the highest ARSE would necessarily win.

In 8 rounds (half of the season), the highest DT and the highest ARSE coincided; and in all of them the Gun was awarded to that rookie. In the remaining rounds, twice the Committee didn't elect the highest ARSE. In 1, the winner was not even the highest DT.

Moreover, in 10 rounds, the decision wasn't unanimous; with 3 of those decided by either one or two votes of difference (4-3; 4-3; 4-2).

    Fielding Choice by Adjusting Factor

    AF 1.05, 147 (37.9%)
    W, 94 (24.2%)
    C, 29 (7.5%)
    RO, 17 (4.4%)
    R, 7 (1.8%)

    AF 1.55, 96 (24.8%)
    HBF, 43 (11.1%)
    CHF, 32 (8.3%)
    CHB, 11 (2.8%)
    FF, 10 (2.6%)

    AF 1.40, 53 (13.7%)
    HFF, 53 (13.7%)

    AF 3.00, 44 (11.3%)
    FP, 44 (11.3%)

    AF 2.40, 30 (7.8%)
    IC, 20 (5.2%)
    BP, 10 (2.6%)

    AF 1.00, 13 (3.4%)
    RR, 13 (3.4%)

    AF 2.25, 5 (1.3%)
    FB, 5 (1.3%)

The AF 1.05 won most Guns (5), followed by AF 1.55 and AF 3.00 (both with 3). The correlation between awarded AF and more-played positions was broken by AF 1.40, that won 2 awards – the same as AF 2.40 (2). The last awarded AF was AF 1.00 with 1.
    Screen Shot 2020-11-22 at 02.22.07.png
The first 6 awards ended up going to positions with distinct AF. The only adjusting factor that was unrewarded, and it didn't win at all, was the one used for FB (AF 2.25), which was also the position in which the rookies have played the fewest.
