Charlie Duncan called into the state 18s

Having a very good year on the wing for south

Any thoughts on him?
Nice size and pretty smooth mover. Uses the footy well and accumulates at a pretty high level on the outside. Realistically he could probably have success across all three lines. He's shown a bit overhead. He had a nice moment on the weekend where he went back with the flight of the ball and hit a contest pretty hard, but aside from that he seems to lean pretty heavily to the outside.

Bit of an SA news drop since it's been a while...

The U18 Championships squad was announced last week. It's a 40 man squad, with 10 underagers named. The one thing that always interests me is whether any 19 year olds are added as we get closer to the Champs, typically it's in areas of need - potentially another tall defender could be added, or some more outside run. But we'll see. It also usually depends on how confident they are in the 17 year olds.

I'm just going to copy across ModernArtillery's predicted team because I largely agree with it...

FF Jack Delean Isaac Keeler Tom Scully

HF Ashton Moir Harry Lemmey Kelsey Rypstra

C Max Blacker Nick Sadler Charlie Duncan

HB Jakob Ryan Brodie Tuck Archie Lovelock

FB Max Michalanney Kyle Marshall Blake Hansen

1R Harry Barnett Kobe Ryan Adam D'Aloia

IC Mattaes Phillipou, Jaiden Magor, Will Patton, Jake Walker, Billy Dowling

Emergencies Will Verrall, Trent Tattoli, Tyson Walls, Shaun Bennier

The biggest question heading in will be how SA manage all their talls. Tom Scully and Harry Lemmey are both genuine top 5 chances, so will be first picked and given every opportunity to shine. What then happens with Isaac Keeler will be interesting, who I think is the most purely talented of them all. I'd like to see him up around CHF, using his athleticism to get up the ground and be a marking target - with Scully and Lemmey staying deeper. And then there's Will Verrall who could miss out despite being good enough to be the #1 ruck.

Midfield has a nice mix, potentially could use more outside run and speed. I think we will see Charlie Duncan on a wing because of that, and he has the potential to impress. And I have high hopes for Mattaes Phillipou, I'd build the midfield around him personally.

Not juniors exactly, but the mid season draft is approaching too and SA should have a few in consideration...

Personally, I think Casey Voss is the best state league player going around at the moment. Whether he gets picked up or not is another question, but he could walk into a lot of teams next week across half back. Otherwise Josh Carmichael and Brett Turner appear most likely as bigger body mids who can go forward. Jye Menzie is maybe still a chance, but hasn't been quite as good as his opening couple of matches recently. Kim Kantilla from South was an interesting name to pop up, 23 year old debuted this year after coming down from the NT. SANFL website says he's 190cm, I think maybe that's a bit generous. Super talented forward and had a big debut game against the Crows. It'd be a big call to pick him, maybe if a club can clear room for two picks...

Anyone go out last night to see the internal trial. Barnett was unbelievable. Probably the best mid on the ground and if your a 202 ruckman that's simply crazy. Moves every bit as well as Luke jackson just quite a bit bigger. Can play!

Barnett has been in ripping form this year, covering the ground like a gazelle, lot of the ball, impacting with strong marks and good ruck work.
He could be anything, playing ruck now but has the tools to play key position at either end.

Mattaes Phillipou's first half yesterday (I only watched the first half) was out of this world. Best half I have seen from a kid this year easily. He just looked so far above anyone on the ground it was crazy. He was taking big marks in the wet completely cleanly. Dominant speed and power and then a snapped goal that looked so arrogant. Crashed into a front a centre when D'Aloia and an oppo mid were there trying to win it, took it from them like they were u/12s and then cruised around another opponent and snapped from 45. It was Bontampeli smooth. He is clearly the top mid in SA for mine and it ain't close

I agree completely. And that’s entirely to do with how good he is, rather than the other SA mids being bad. They need to build around him at the Champs.

I have him top 5 overall. I know some are being conservative by having him only in the top 20. Anyone who has him outside of that though, geez…

Saw him live yesterday for 3/4 before having to shoot off and definitely in my top 5. Was head and shoulders above anything else

Phillipou’s Grandfather Peter was a brilliant player for West Torrens. His Dad Sam (CHF) a very good player for the Eagles and was on Footscray’s list for a bit. His Uncle Michael also a good SANFL key forward at the Eagles. Plenty of pedigree.
Sam played around 40ish games for port magpies and 100+ for wwt in the sanfl.

If I’m not mistaken if Sam hadnt of been drafted by dogs and cut a year later he arguably would have qualified as a port father son or at least come within a bees dick of it.

I didn’t realise he played as many seasons for Port as he did. 92-94 with Eagles inc 93 Premiership, 95 at Footscray, 96-97 back at Eagles, 98-02 at Port Magpies (although didn’t play in the 98 or 99 premiership), 03-04 back at Eagles then 05 with the Magpies again.

His other uncle Jason could have been the best of the lot. Unbelievable talent.

Just finished watching the SA v NSW and Scully, Barnett were not impressive. Phillipou looked okay, Ryan must have been subbed but he looked good early. I thought Keeler showed something early.
JaKe Walker looked pretty good to me, strongly built mid that can take a grab.

Ordinary conditions didn't help the SA talls either.
