Remember Matthew Primus

Stands emptied out tonight. Sydney is a tough market when you offer nothing.

I can’t see he lasts on that basis for too long.

Forget what fans think or would do

Do you honestly think Harley's swans would sack Dean Cox in 2025 , i'd bet just about anything it wouldn't happen

That assumes Harley is around.

Won’t happen this year but Cox won’t last if he can’t turn around the performances.

Fans Bronx cheering the home team. It’s never good.

Add the 90 point loss tonight and that makes the 7th 50+ point loss since the 2022 Grand Final.

Not saying Cox is entirely to blame as the rot started when Horse was at the helm. But this group does not have mentality it takes to win a premiership.

For comparison, we only had 6 50+ point losses in the entire decade from 2011-2020, that includes two years when we were a bottom 4 team.

This is the first 50+ point loss at the SCG in 23 years, had to go back to Round 8, 2002 to find a similar result so we witnessed a bit of history tonight...

The second 50+ loss in two weeks is warning signs, particularly one at home

For context, the current coaching panel:

Cox
Ben Matthews - midfield
Mark McVeigh - defence
Amon Buchanan - forward

Matthews has been our midfield coach since 2021 (when we got good again after a few lean years)

McVeigh was our defensive coach last year

Buchanan joined the assistant panel for this season. Was a 1-3yr development coach for the 2 seasons before that.

All been with the club for a few years, but had experience elsewhere.

Matthews at Melbourne with Roos/Goodwin, and Buchanan and Mark McVeigh with the Giants through that 2015-22 period where they were good, but couldn’t get the job done.
All ex Swans players. How about we get someone from out of that bubble? And with injuries either we are VERY unlucky most have been leg injuries or someone doesnt know what they are doing re: training etc. Jarrad McVeigh coaching 2nds too - who happened to lose by 94 points. Dattoli might be ok in a few more weeks - he is clever.

Cox for the most part says the right things but for me since the hand over was announced, not once has he inspired confidence in me, not once. And if I'm not inspired as a fan, how the **** are the team supposed to be inspired, or buy into what he's trying to do?

This was just the wrong call from the start.

I'm not even thinking about the Cox.

This list is so ****ed

Horse performed a miracle last year getting this band of battlers into the GF.

Brisbane knew it was all fake and treated it as such . Contempt.

This has been 5 years of shocking drafting and list MGT and the chickens are coming home to roost

I remember saying we haven't recruited a decent player since Buddy.

Some people on here tried to tell me I had NFI because apparently james jordon is a gun!

FFS people. Get a grip.
It could equally be said we haven’t recruited a decent player BECAUSE of Buddy.

Of course, that doesn’t excuse our very very dubious drafting in recent years.

Cox is now a man under immense pressure and scrutiny. But he ain’t going to be punted this year. Absolutely will not happen.

Need to look at recruiting a gun forward alas Barry Hall, Buddy or Lockett in their prime this season.

Id look at a Harry McKay or Charlie Curnow, something that has a bit of razamatazz to the Harbour city.

Cox does look a bit out of his depth at the moment. its one thing being an assistant coach but another thing being the main coach.

And yeah I agree with a few posters in here, Longmire squeezed every bit of juice out of this crop. But there will be changes come end of this season, it will be a chance for Cox to rid of players he might not want and to mould the team into what he wants.

The Sydney sports market is a very fickle market. Its with all sports teams more so than other states, where if the teams don't perform, the crowds won't turn up and its much tougher to find the loyal sports fan in Sydney, during a declining phase.

And also what will be challenging in the next phase with life after Buddy, is the Swans don't get concessions like COLA anymore. It was a large reason why the Swans were able to keep their higher paid players. Now its a bit more a level footing.

Challenging times and if there is a rebuild, it might be a 2-3 year phase period. In which time, there is no guarantee Cox will be there.

Thank god it happened at the scg. I was beginning to think it was me being there that was the problem

Of course it was because of buddy. We were maxed at the salary cap for years and we lost 10% of the salary cap on top of it.

This club needs a shake up in the coaches box. Not necessarily Cox but some fresh eyes and minds in the assistants ranks.
It's insanity to keep doing the same thing and expecting different results.
Yes there's been injuries but there has also been a massive drop off in discipline and effort.
Give him another off season if need be but change something.
Short of calling our current assistants shit, the club have made it pretty clear that attracting talented coaches to Sydney is damn near impossible, especially with the soft cap.

It's a hell of a lot harder to attract guys in their 30s and 40s to move interstate when they have families and firm roots laid down in their traditional football states.

90% of our pool is going to come from our previous players or ex GWS assistants.

And I'm not saying we shouldn't be trying our best to shake things up, but it's simply not as easy as dangling a carrot in front of quality assistants from other teams.

Yep I’ve been thinking about this too. For a side that’s had made two GFs in three years they just throw the towel in exceptionally often.

This is part of the broader issue of the club right now though imo. So much is being tried and so little is working. Hamling is a defensive forward for three weeks and then he’s FB on Walker, McCartin has been thrown back and forward over and over, Ladhams in and out, Warner and Heeney rotating between forward and midfield constantly, Rowbottom in the guts and then out on a flank and back again and the list goes on. Injuries are part of it but they don’t explain it all and you can’t build a team that functions on the back of its best five players getting the job done (Chad, Errol, Heeney, Blakey and Papley) but that feels like what we’ve been now for a few years. I suspect Cox would be feeling trapped right now - the more I try, the less works and the worse we seem to play. That’d be an awful feeling in your first year as coach but that’s what’s happening.

I can’t remember a Sydney side that feels this unstable, uncertain, and inconsistent in my time following the club. Even on rare occasions we’ve been out of finals contention it has felt like you could at least rely on knowing basically what was going on. We’re playing the kids or we’re focusing on remaining competitive or we’re trying to regenerate the list with some players from other clubs. This side feels dangerously hard to reach and hard to pull together when everything isn’t going their way.
