We've had one of our own chief lovejoys downplay the probably bad concussion management at others clubs whilst getting their knickers so knotted over ours that they won't have to worry about reproducing, never mind the posters from away.

Over the past 5 odd years I've watched quite a lot of neutral games and I think we are the worst by far. For the most part in the last few years I've seen bad head knocks treated pretty seriously.
For us though, I've seen repeated occasions of a quick spell on the bench and back into it. Apparently we're not allowed to criticise the doctor though.

This could open up a lot more serious discussion about head knocks which is a good thing ( apart from those oppo support ers and commentators mainly having a go for just point scoring and not out of concern or even in good faith)

Sounds like doc made a really poor decision.

Also we see head hits regularly in AFL with players still playing on.
Maybe the rules do need to be further tightened as certainly these sort of repeated injuries can have serious implications for players going forward.
I think other clubs need to look in their own back yard as all clubs could learn something.

Biggest issue for the AFL is that clearly both players suffered pretty severe knocks, yet Lachie passed scat5 tests, and both did in the following days.

I have not heard of any MRI or any other scans being done to show up any bruising etc.

Perhaps the AFL could look to develop, in partnership with specialists, a more accurate test to determine brain injury quicker and more accurately.

Whilst true, there seems to be a lot of “delayed onset concussions” creeping into the AFL

Why do you think it's a ridiculous take given AFL is naturally a brutal contact sport?

It is brutal but that doesn’t mean we should have blatant disregard for players and their longevity. Especially given all the new research on head knocks and long term effects.

Particularly in Aliir’s case were they sent him back out without a test even when you can clearly see he goes limp. I’m not too phased with Jones if he was cleared after the protocol test.

On a side note, I have no idea how McCartin was allowed back in the AFL system. He is going to suffer a terrible life

It's a reasonable point poorly made.

Players are well compensated and provided broader life opportunities most people could only dream of. They go into the sport knowing that this is the case but also that it's a dangerous pursuit that could leave them with long term health issues. This has always been the case but it's only recently that brain injuries have become the biggest part of that discussion. Nat Fyfe recently said that he knows he's going to have all sorts of issues post football and that he's made a 'deal with the devil' but is at peace with it.

The real discussion is around what the AFL and clubs should be doing to mitigate the risks and minimise the inevitable long term damage from playing the sport.

I understand the merits in the ordinary course of playing and injuring themselves but not when a bloke’s been knocked unconscious.

Also we shouldn’t pretend a bung knee is comparable to brain damage.
