Opinion Sack Hinkley 3 - 2021 is worse than 2020 already

Absolutely agree with the `we don't turn up' bit, which has been a problem for a long time and as has been mentioned by many is extremely obvious very early, and also the Ken `plan A' bit, because when it doesn't work his body language appears negative as if he doesn't know what to do.

Without going into too many specifics though numerous coaches would have changed their game plan during breaks in an attempt to change the course of a game, with the most recent successful example being Hardwicke the other night against the dogs.

Every coach tries something different if its not working. Change doesnt equal winning though. Sometimes you just come up against a team more determined and better than yours.

As i aaid in the game thread, this was more of an execution issue than something more ingrained. More inside 50s, 5.14.

It's not even necessarily about making massive changes. Sometimes you just need to identify that the opposition are hot and the game needs to be slowed down and turned into trench warfare for a little bit, particularly on the road.

We have a mature team with leaders on every line that considers itself a premiership contender. It's disturbing that we have proven twice already this year that we are powerless when a good team gets on a roll with the crowd behind them.

The two most similar games to a grand final we have played this year are West Coast and Brisbane away. The grand final is an away game, likely with a hostile crowd and against a high quality team. What confidence would anyone have based on exposed evidence that we wouldn't be lambs to the slaughter under that heat and out of the game by half time?

The GF wont be played at Brisbanes home ground (id hope). So for them its an away game too. For them its their lists first grand final. For them, theyll be just as anxious as we are.

But it's not like they weren't creating opportunities all night. They also had plenty of inside 50s and scoring shots. It was a low pressure game where they were taking their chances and we weren't. That was the case from the start and we didn't change the look of the game at all, despite the conditions theoretically making it pretty easy to turn the game into a slog.

Despite being an AFL premiership coach Choco, after controversially having his contract extended in 2009 for two years was sacked mid way through the 2010 season. Choco's football department at the time was running on the smell of an oily rag.

Why should Hinkley, with resources and support Choco could only ever of dreamed of, be afforded greater leniency than our only AFL flag winning coach?

What has Hinkley achieved that, unlike Choco, puts his coaching performance beyond question?

We had one of the highest paid and best football departments for most of chocos reign as coach. The oily rag only came in his last year or two.

What about if we play the Bulldogs, Melbourne or Richmond?

It's 0 wins, 3 bad losses from our 3 genuine away games against quality teams since the start of last year.

It's a small sample but I'd like to see some evidence of us standing up to that sort of heat - even getting close would be encouraging at this point.

Both Brisbane and West Coast feature a tall forward line that, if they choose, can separate our tall defenders by quite a distance.

Think 1 tall in the square, 1 high up the ground and 1 somewhere in between.

Our team defence is based on at least one defender making a context on the ground stopping the forward leaping at the ball, allowing one of our backs to intercept mark or neutralise the contest bringing the ball to ground for our contested ball winning small defenders and mids to mop up or at worst force a stoppage.

The further apart the defenders are, the more we will concede. Teams with only 2 main talls don't force this problem as much, unless their ruck/fwd is decent and even if we're down in the contest/midfield we're probably not getting scored heavily against until we hopefully turn it around and get a period of dominance.

What does this have to do with Hinks? Well its only the fourth time in a row this has happened, even with the acquisition of Allir. What is he going to do next time we play a team with 3 goodish talls who spread our defence thin?

Maybe we should just stick Aliir in the middle of them all and hope they kick it down his throat like we do.

Their talls werent the reason they won. Hipwood had his worst ever game against us, Mcstay did nothing. Was only Daniher who played well and he did most of his best work outside 50.

Didn't say that. I said that they spread our defence more than other teams. I don't have the stats but I'd guess our scores from back half were well down as well as scores from anywhere else on the ground.

The big concern was if we could get another year out of Robbie, HH, Rocky, Dixon and Trav.

Most seem now to be falling away quicker than we had hoped. We seem fragile and banged up at round 7 - this is a concern with plenty of footy left this year.

Ken missed his premiership boat in 2017-2020. This was his time and he didn’t make it.

Sydney were down 29 in 2nd qtr on the weekend. Haeks were down by 31 in the 3rd qtr the week before.

Rockliff is depth. Hartlett is becoming so. Neither have ever been world beaters. Trav is still very good. Robbie is still dangerous, just no longer our best player. Dixon is Dixon.

With the progression of the rest of the squad and the addition of Aliir and Fantasia, I think we are stronger than we were last year.

Remember we used to match and beat the great Brisbane sides at the Gabba. Aren't those sides in the conversation for best ever? Some say this is our best ever list.
This is mostly between the ears. Whether it's the coach unable to get the best out of this bunch or the players getting it out of themselves, I'll leave it to others to judge.

The other thing to consider: getting up at 4am to play a night game halfway across the country is insane.

Last night on Footy Classified he said our win/loss ratio for home and away games 6W 13L mean't we couldn't be taken seriously as a contender :(

Yet he always finds a moment to dunk on the ‘Hinkley Haters’ 🤷‍♀️
