Opinion Sack Hinkley 3 - 2021 is worse than 2020 already

Is winning early games a good way of gaining back some credit. Of course it is. But (especially with Hinkley), you judge at the end of the season not the start. Will happily eat humble pie should it be the case, but not there yet.

There is no humble pie to eat:
1. People said co-captains wouldn't work. It was probably the biggest failure since Port entered the AFL. We've now gone back to one captain.
2. People said playing short people as marking forwards wouldn't work. It didn't and caused 5 years of failure. We've now gone back to multiple talls.
3. People said that playing forwards in the forward line and rucks in the ruck was the best way to do things. We didn't do this and it failed repeatedly on multiple levels. We've now gone back to specialist forwards and specialist rucks.

If we succeed this year, it's because Ken has actually finally listened and made the changes people have been calling on him to make. If we succeed it's because of the fans that refused to go quietly and demanded success. If we succeed this year it's a success that belongs as much to Ken as it does to every other person involved with this football club.

The only way people would need to eat humble pie would be if we won the flag this year with 10 co-captains, 6 not-quite-co-but-still-lovely-captains, and 3-vice-but-just-as-nice captains, with Ryan Burton playing in the ruck, and no Marshall, Georgiades or Dixon on grand final day.
Nah if Ken wins us a flag this year I will gladly eat humble pie!

Top 4 and it's jury is still out.

Less than that and it see ya Ken.

Ok explain this to me, to me humble pie is admitting you were wrong. But what the first four weeks of this season have shown is that the comments made here werent wrong, they were absolutely on the money.

Unless your position has been specifically that Ken needs to go because he as a person isnt capable, then humble pie isnt relevant.

For me I just want good coaching. Whether thats Ken learning from his mistakes and developing in to a good coach, or someone else taking the reins, I honestly dont care.

The problem this board has always had is the belief that structure is necessary even if the player isn’t at the required level individually.

Would Marshall be having the season he is having without Dixon having the season he is having? And vice versa? So you’re talking about the following years:

2017 - Marshall loses his mother, rookie season. Port makes finals on a good season from Dixon

2018 - Marshall and Dixon start well, Marshall loses in father, Dixon breaks his leg

2019 - Dixon only plays half the season, Marshall has to play in a forward line with Ryder and Westhoff

This is literally the first year that both Dixon and Marshall have been able to play together without any setbacks. I guaranteed that Hinkley would play Dixon and Marshall together all year...the question was whether or not he’d play Georgiades as well, and he did for the first game.

Guys like Frampton weren’t ever going to make it. We wanted to play Howard forward and he didn’t want to do that.

We improve our list every year, and since Hinkley is one of three people on the list management committee, he is responsible for that.

Inconvenient truths.

But you know what? I couldn’t care less about any of it. All I want is for Port Adelaide to win the flag, playing the style of football that I know they are capable of - relentless pressure, team defence that wins the ball in a counter pressing mindset (push up the ground if you can make an impact, get back into position if you can’t) and fast, methodical premiership quality ball movement.

No one has to eat humble pie. Conversely, no one should be a dick at 4-0.

It’s just a game.

The real test will be if one of Dixon, Marshall and Westhoff gets injured. Who comes in?
Chris Davies would be ringing AFL House trying to get them to institute a mid-season trade window so we can bring in a likely prospect from Sydney who appears to be on the outer.

I would be wrong because I would have sacked Ken before this year and didnt think he had it in him to win a flag.

The problem with not replacing like for like is that you not only have an inferior key forward with Dixon/Marshall out, but everyone else has to change their role and how they play it to fit into a different system.

This is especially apparent in our ball movement which has been haphazard at best for years, because we change up how we do things too often. Flag winning teams become well oiled machines that trust each other because they know everyone knows their role and will execute it.

Frampton wasn't fit to tie a fit and firing Dixon's shoelaces, but playing him in Dixon's role at least would have allowed everyone else to go about their business in the same way. Instead we completely changed our forward strategy. Change like for like, build trust in the game plan and results will follow.

I'd like to believe that but Ken would be pushing for an extension based on this year as soon as it finishes. I'd wager my wife on it that he gets an extension if we end this year top 4.

If Ken doesn't get extended this year, that extra year finals trigger we were all whingeing about since 2017 could be a godsend. If he was out of contract this year and we made finals with our yOuNg tEaM, there's no way he wouldn't get at least a two year extension (because no coach would ever get a one year extension). But as it is, if we do make finals, we have the option of just sitting back and seeing how 2021 goes before committing.

Nothing would make this place melt hardery than a repeat of 2017’s shenanigans where we had the option of “just sitting back” and didn’t.

Nothing.

I doubt we will be in a position financially to offer such a lucrative deal at the end of the year. Most likely we activate the clause giving him 2021, and revisit it at the end of that year.

After the backlash they copped at the end of 2017, i really can't see Koch and co making the same mistake twice.

If he keeps coaching like this he can be our Kevin Sheedy for all I care. Problem is we have 5 years of previous history that tells us that under the slightest bit of pressure he'll revert back to type. If he doesn't this time, excellent.

The bolded sentence.

Frampton kicked 25% of the Crows score yeaterday and it's not like the teams playing well and delivering ball with purpose. I still think given the opportunity in a structured forward line, Frampton would have been okay but hey we had Sam Gray.

Georgiades. Hayes possible too

We dont really have any small options of a Neade/Gray type. All our quality smalls are already playing.
I am glad we don't, the temptation to bring in a small would be to great for Hinkley. Seeing Dixon and Marshall planted firmly in the forward line is a breath of fresh air. Westhoff going under the radar and taking a few marks up forward now and then is good to see too, Justin is having a great start to the season.

We have Cox. We have Woodcock. We have Mayes who started his career as a forward. We have the option of pushing Farrell or Butters up forward. Don't underestimate our mate Ken.

Absolutely this, two games at Adelaide oval ( and there were plenty more ) that were just flushed down the crapper by kern and his midget forward set up were against a tigger magoo strength team, and brisvegas when they were still struggling to get out of the bottom half of the ladder.

In the latter game a bloke I had never heard of before, and I can't even recall his name now, took countless uncontested marks in our forward 50, particularly in the all important 2nd half, and we lost by something like 10 points.
From memory he may have even got Brownlow votes for that game.

There was also a game against the bummers (when they had a half decent line up), when we were the better part of 5 goals up at half time and kern said in the interview, and I quote `we need to slow the game down!'
Well slow the game down we did, the oppo coach picked up on it and they came over the top of us.
Kern's coaching that day was beyond dreadful, and he almost certainly burnt 4 points with his ineptitude, yet Koch and co still gave him a contract extension!

I hate to say it guys, but I told you so. I said you would beat us easily.

Ken Hinkley has put up with disgusting vitriol for years and he just dumped a premiership contender like they were nothing. He outcoached a premiership coach.

Can all who want him sacked come out and apologize please?

I hate seeing a man get attacked undeservedly. At least be big enough to admit you were wrong. Otherwise you are simply being toxic for the sake of it.
We have 2 or 3 big wins a year and then stumble when we are supposed to win. When we get into the finals, win them, and win a flag you will get an apology. Not before. No premature celebrations here.

Removing his kick to the bloody shithouse inside 50 to gain forward territory gameplan, has helped our play this year.

As others have already posted, if Hinkley finally starts doing what many of us have been calling for him to do, and pretty much the opposite of what he has done for the past five wasted seasons, and it wins us a flag why would there be any need for me to apologise? Surely it is Hinkley who should be apologising.

I've been paying my membership for all those wasted seasons while he's been collecting a truck load while being completely incompetent.
