Saddington is now on the list for insurance only.
Will get called up if we need a hard body down back, but will be behind several others in the pecking order.

He showed numerous times last year that he hasn't been able to regain his pace (not that he was ever FAST, but that only makes his slowing worse), and his disposal has been 50/50 at best.
Would need a really lucky break to get into the starting 22 and would then need to do something pretty amazing to get a new contract at then end of the year.........we could hang onto him to send him north when they come asking for players.:D

Will be one of the three minimum delistees at seasons end IMO.
Blackwell, Bentick, Bannister, Wiggins are all in the gun for the other two spots unless they push hard for their senior selection.

Saddington in defence only slows the development of our young defenders. He won't be there next year, so let's move on and let him play our his career at the Bullants. I'd rather Austin in the side, let the kid learn and grow.

I don't think Austin looks ready at all to be honest. Still got a bit of development to do with the Bullants and in the gym imo. Putting in a kid who isn't ready would harm their development rather than help it imo

Saddington couldn't even fend off Westhoff, a first year player last year, and gets beaten every time he plays in defence. What the Carlton football club needs are defenders that stop their opponents from kicking goals, not defenders that rack up the possies in the backline.

Exactly. I got so sick of seeing the likes of Bower, Waite and Thornton last year racking up the stats in the backhalf, but giving their man plenty of space. I don't give a shit if our key defenders get 0 possessions, if they stop their opponent they've done their job. We have blokes like Scotland who can provide the run out of defence

FWIW, in our first 2 NAB Cup games this year, it actually seems as if Ratten has started addressing that problem. Imo Waite and Bower have been much more accountable. If Bower can get his accountability and decision-making up to scratch i reckon he's gonna be great :thumbsu:

Have to agree with this. As we kept saying about Hartlett & Edwards last season (in between injuries), we need our kids to earn a senior game, not get a game because they are a kid. In recent seasons we have been playing kids before they are ready because we had no choice. With a little bit more depth at the club now, I want to see Austin get in the best players for the Bullants several weeks in a row before he finds his way into the senior 22. I would also like to see him lift his intensity, because at the moment I think he is just going through the motions & nothing more.

Let me guess....same poster under different names?

Clearly.

I agree. He's either the same poster, or bolz is his boss at work and he's doing a little something-something to get ahead. Saddington isn't even that bad though. If we put him into the rotations it could sustain us until our younger guys develop. I know having him in the senior side means one less young kid who gets to play; but sometimes time in the bullants where they can play a more dominant role and get their confidence up is good for developing kids. Just adding my tuppence. Cheers

Bench at Most. Our backline is looking solid ATM, we need the youngsters to have a go and get used to the lineup back there.

Solid Backline? What Carlton have you been watching? In some of the kids we have potential. What we need is the potential to become talent, the kids to become experienced, and our erratic backline to become gelled and consistent; with the guys learning each other, getting to have that unspoken connection you can see with teams such as Sydney.

I can understand what Walshy is saying, in that the pre-season form of Jamison and Bower loks good and they look to have stepped up a bit.
Add Setanta and it starts to look o.k..........but we need to show some ability in the regular season before we say its solid.:thumbsu:

Jamison, Setanta, Thornton, Waite...looks to be a very decent backline on paper. I honestly think it'll be one of our strong points this year to be honest for the first time in a long time.

We're gonna lack up forward imo, any injury to Fev or Fisher will hurt us badly.

Absolute rubbish. We have some promising players coming through that can play down back, but our backline is a hell of a long way away from looking like a strong point of our side.

Going out on a limb there . They're our best 2 forwards, of course injuries to them will hurt us!

I said i felt like it could be one of our stronger points. For christs sake can't i have an opinion?

Are you in a bad mood Jeremias? Is there a need for the sarcasm? Seriously. That was my whole point. The fact that our backline looks stronger than what it has in previous years and our forward line looks quite a bit weaker and could be our achilles heal if injuries were to hit us there. Unlike our midfield, i think we'll be fine even if one or two injuries (heaven forbid) were to hit a couple of our better mids.

It's people like you that make me not want to post on this forum anymore, because it seems like if i don't have an opinion that goes along with the majority i am slandered for it.

I'm convinced people's responses are mood driven. Mine often are.
