Saints are still alive

Be patient when the top players will start coming back from injury then we will start putting the results on the board.

Nice font there Mr Saint.

Riewoldt: Don't give up on Saints
27 May 2007 Sunday Herald Sun
Scot Palmer and Jackie Epstein

ST Kilda's rash of injuries was "almost laughable, certainly beyond the ridiculous", according to co-captain Nick Riewoldt.

Despondent after a 46-point loss to Fremantle on Friday night and the hamstring strain to dual Brownlow medallist Robert Harvey, Riewoldt conceded the rising casualty list was becoming frustrating for the Saints.

Riewoldt, who was attending a Perth supporters breakfast yesterday, said on Triple M: "It would be nice at some stage this season to get a full compliment of players available."

"It only needs one performance and all the confidence returns."

St Kilda's short-term pain after losing Harvey may be tempered by the return of several key players in the coming weeks.

Harvey limped off in the first quarter against Fremantle and will have scans tomorrow to determine the extent of hamstring damage to his left leg.

Only one game short of his 350th, Harvey is expected to be sidelined for 3-4 weeks.

But the heavy toll is set to soften with defenders Max Hudghton, Jason Gram and Raphael Clarke to possibly return this week against Geelong and Leigh Montagna making better than expected progress with a broken jaw.

Lenny Hayes, who made a brave comeback only a month after breaking his collarbone, said the group was trying to stay upbeat.

The loss to the Dockers has the Saints near the foot of the ladder with four wins and five losses.

"We still think we're a very good chance to make the finals," Hayes said.

"I think we will get quite a few guys back over the next couple of weeks. Maxy Hudghton has played a couple now and Jason Gram could be a chance for this week and Raphael Clarke has been playing some footy. Leigh Montagna might only miss a couple.

"We've got a lot of positives over the next couple of weeks and we still really think that we can build and get a competitive side out there leading into finals."

Hayes said poor kicking in front of goal had hurt the side, especially in the second and third quarters when it was making a charge.

"We didn't have the run and we missed guys like Jason Gram and Leigh Montagna," Hayes said on SEN.

"And over here you needed to be a really good running side. The focus going in was that 22 blokes had to run and overlap and create some opportunities.

"We had a really bad start and worked our way into the game in the second and third quarters but didn't take our chances.

"We played really good footy but might have kicked 1.5 - and in the third had a lot more inside-50s than them but didn't convert.

"Having a man down at the start of the game probably didn't help. Over there you need all 22 runners, so that hurt us a bit as well."

Hayes said he pulled up a little bit sore, but was pleased with his progress. He finished with 21 possessions and 2.2.

"It's not too bad," he said.

"A little bit sore this morning, just a touch, but I didn't really feel it through the game."

How has max being going in the VFL? The saints need to win at least one of the next two games. Lose against the cats and kangas and i think are final hopes are gone. being 4-7 with a perth game against West Coast would just make it too hard.

If max can return and play every games left in the season, the saints backline is starting to look better.

I'd be getting concerned about how long our 'window of opportunity' is?
I tipped us for 8th at the start of the year - appointing a new coach is always a handicap to any team. Call me crazy but our only big losses have been interstate and we did beat the Swans with a host of injuries - I think we can live up to that prediction of 8th this year once we start getting players back.

It worries me when our key midfielder, as good as he is, is nearly elligible for the Pension

Golden mate...very nice. your right although is it just because he is one of those players who can just keep going and going i don't think it is necessarily says anything bad about the saints but more so a credit to his approach and professionalism towards the game to still be one of the leagues elite players.
