melbourne (saints)
With the news of Sam Loxtons double tragedy (may his family and friends ease his grief) I got to reading about his sporting life, and it is everything that most aussie young fellas dream about.
Cricket stats - 12 TESTS runs 554 avg 36.93 wickets 8 at 43.62
Played in the '48 side with Bradman and is one of the invincibles.
Footy - leading goal kicker for the mighty saints in 1944 with 52 and in 1946 with 40.

Another great cricketer from the saints was Keith Miller 55 TESTS 2958 runs avg 36.97, wickets 170 at 22.97. A description of Miller by Russell Holmesby first paragraph in Heroes with Haloes, "The word 'swashbuckling' was invented for Keith Miller. How else do you describe a life story that sounds like it was part of a Boy's Own saga. Champion cricketer all-rounder who could hit the ball harder than anyone else and bowl as fast as any man on the planet, wartime fighter pilot who narrowly avoided death .. and St Kilda footballer." 50 games for the saints and 48 goals.

Simon O'Donnell 6 tests runs 206 avg 29.42 6 wickets. Great one day cricketer when it wasn't fashionable. 20 odd games for the saints, none of them memorable.

Shane Warne played under 19's and still plays for St Kilda district, when available.

The saints footy history is 'ummmmm unfulfilled' but surely we have produced the best cricketers.

Very true Strength Through Loyalty.

One record we hold that doesn't involve losing streaks or wooden spoons. I like it!

I don't know about you but my respect for Warnie shot up when he wore the saints jumper on the balcony or Lords.

And I can only add my sympathies to Sam Loxton. To lose a wife and son on the same day is just beyond comprehension. He seems to be a very strong character and he has everyones support.

It always has to be about Essendon deosn't it.

Sainties, be proud of Keith Miller for he was the consumate playboy, someone we all would have loved to have been.

All literature written about him casts him in that light and I only wish I could have seen him performing in both capacities.

Curious to know if you guys have seen any footage of the great man.

And btw they all played football for St Kilda walshy.
