The 09 season was amazing. We just completely smashed everyone who stood in our way, other than in the most important game of the year. our defensive pressure that season was crazy. Teams literally couldn’t score against us.

10 was fun too, Brendan Goddard went super sayan all season and god mode in the drawn grand final, but again fell short. It sucked missing Riewoldt for another extended period on the sidelines too.

we were really spoiled for players in them times. Insanely good teams.

I don't remember much of Stewart Loewe, but from what I've heard from my dad and others (and seen from clips on youtube etc.) he was a force of nature when he got going.

Buckets was a superstar but criminally under rated because he played for a low profile and mostly unsuccessful club.

He was the equal if not better than Kernahan... yet you rarely hear Loewe spoken about as up there with the best CHF of the 80's and 90's.

My quick recollections to your queries;

As Gringo alluded to, Alvesy was very abrasive to some players and it was wearing thin by the end of 98. Players left for more $$$ and Winmar was going off the rails (no one could contain him by then). Alvesy also had a tenuous relationship with many of the board... they had clashed heavily over Stan bringing in Leading Teams (ahead of his times), as well as recruiting and how he wanted to coach the team. Andrew Plympton was infatuated with Watson and believed that he would be the next Leigh Matthews so they hooked Stan. Stan's boy was killed in a train crossing accident before he came to StK. Kenny Sheldon had offered him a part time assistant role to help him get his mind on something else after that terrible tragedy.

Lowest point was probably the Hawthorn game in 99. 10 goals up & flying then before we know it, back to the wooden spoon.
Highest undoubtedly BJ's mark in 2010. For about a minute we thought we had finally won the flipping thing.

GT? A stupid falling out with Butterss. Would have been sacked even if we'd won the flag.

Oh & 97 seemed like destiny. It was going to be ours. Then Cuz' dad died, Loewe's sister, Stan starting Keogh on the bench and flipping Jarman. To be honest we probably lost it 3 weeks earlier when Spida busted his collar bone. With either him or Lazar, Pittman doesn't do what he did & we win in a canter.

Disagree on that minute in 2010.

Pies are money club and in their history they have "we weren't the best but we challenged and won" flags, so unless we actually won that match, I'd have not put it past them to crack the sads use that money and demand a rematch, and literally any other club except for maybe the Blues would cop it sweet. But such a close affair you'd bet dollars would trump integrity 9 times out of 10 in that scenario, afterall, this was under Demetrious reign and he loved that dollar and eveything else just made the rug taller.

I’m not sure what you’re trying to say here. There was a rematch because we didn’t win.

I've read that three times & still unsure what you're trying to say!

Glad I’m not the only one who was confused. Hope he can help us out coz I have a feeling he was making a good point - I just don’t know what that point was.

Zero chance we win v Pies under Demitious reign.

Tis boys club, we upstart club they test rules on to find out if tolerable or not.

Hi All,

Sorry again for the intrusion. Thought you might be interested in the piece I have written about your club from 1997-2011. The first of four parts has now been published. Hope you enjoy.

Cheers :)

This is right in my wheelhouse!

Unfortunately flat knacker at work so can't add much at the moment, but there are some great posts on the Alves sacking.

I'd add one little-discussed event. After we lost that final to the Swans in 98 (but were not eliminated b/c of the weird finals system), Stan made them sing the song in the rooms. Weirdest thing I ever saw. It was an example of how Stan was a very unorthodox coach. Those unorthodox methods are great when you're winning, but they grate when you're losing. I suspect that moment was a nail in his coffin (god knows as a motivational tactic it didn't work, considering the following week!), but it's also an example of what I think was probably a general factor that the board (and players?) didn't like.

I think "did we expect to win the 1997 grand final?" is also a big part of Alves' downfall. It barely occurred to Saints supporters that week that we'd lose! It must have been a bitter pill, and it may have sapped our confidence in ourselves - I don't think the club knew what to do when the wheels started to fall off in 98.

Lowest moment - someone has mentioned Hawks in 99 - absolutely agree. The other was GT's last game as coach - v Melbourne in the 96 finals. Should have won, didn't, and it really did feel like the end of an era, and like we'd underachieved. Our (dysfunctional) board obviously agreed, and I think they were ultimately proved right but you can also make the opposite argument.

Hi All,

Just thought I'd let you know that parts two and three have now been published, with the final part due to be published later this week.

Cheers

Yeah , wasn't that a fun day at Artic park FMD
Yep I was there with my Hawthorn supporting mate and he wanted to leave at half time but stuck around so I could enjoy it. Gee did things turn quickly after that. Couldn't wait for the final siren to go.

It was the first real taste I got as a supporter of seeing the St.Kilda script. It went from 60 points to 50, to 40, to 30...I remember thinking that it didn't matter how close they got because it just wasn't possible to come back from 11 goals down. I was taught a good lesson that day. These days I get more nervous when we're 10 goals up than 10 points up.

Ahh , Welcome to st kilda or maybe we should call them Saint Kilda on this occasion , you would have loved it at Moorabbin winning 2 games a year

Yep I love history so even though I wasn't around then I have read alot of the history of the club thanks to guys like Russell Holmesby who wrote books (pretty much encyclopaedias) about us. We have a history of disappointment, the 1913 grand final is a real laugh. Disappointment set in early for our club but I love them all the same.

The best part of our history is the day half the team decide to go to the races instead of turning up to play , Yeah we lost that day too by forfeit

I listened to a podcast with Michael Roberts the other week, he talks about the players being more worried about picking up chicks after games. He reckons that's why were an endearing club that most people have as their 2nd favourite. Relatable lol

If they had put in the same effort on the ground as upstairs in the social club the cabinet would be full of cups instead of spoons

A story that got told to me be an ex saints player , the late great Barks was entertaining a friend in the rooms late one night after a game , may have had a few too many and fallen asleep , her not being impressed left him something on his chest when he woke up :poov1:

Nice namecheck for Caydn Beetham there, such a waste of a pick. I remember reading one of those silly little player interview in the footy record where they asked him what his chosen profession would be if he wasn't an AFL player. His answer?

Gangster rapper.

[emoji1787]

I knew then he'd never amount to anything. I wonder if he ever did become a gangster rapper. Just one of many instances where our scouts could have actually paid attention to the dedication and desire, not just the skills and experience.
