The new Saints leadership group consists of:

Nick Riewoldt, Justin Koschitzke, Luke Ball, Lenny Hayes, Matt Maguire, Nick Dal Santo, Xavier Clarke and Stephen Milne.

Ball fancies 'Kosi' to lead

Ball is part of an expanded eight-man leadership group from whom a successor to Nick Riewoldt will be appointed under the club's rotation policy.

Matt Maguire, Nick Dal Santo, Xavier Clarke and Stephen Milne have joined the group this season replacing Stephen Powell, Aaron Hamill and Max Hudghton.

"It’s a pretty young group, I think Lenny (Hayes) is the oldest guy in it at 26, so it's a bit of a changing of the guard I guess," said Ball.

"In terms of the captain, nothing's been discussed, but I think 'Kosi' would probably be the front-runner at this stage, but that will get sorted out closer to the season, I guess.

"We've had a couple of meetings and it’s a good young enthusiastic group and we're looking forward to leading the boys."

The Captain hasn't been anounced yet, but will become the next topic for speculation.

My odds for Captaincy:

2 - 5 Justin Koschitzke
9 - 4 Luke Ball
4 - 1 Nick Dal Santo
12- 1 Lenny Hayes
14- 1 Matt Maguire,
20- 1 Nick Riewoldt,
80- 1 Xavier Clarke
200-1 Stephen Milne.

I'm a bit surprised to see the likes of Hamill and Maxie omitted from the leadership group to be totally honest.

At least you know that they'll lead from the front regardless of the leadership position they hold within the group. Also it will be nice to see them do a full pre-season and put all of their energies into staying fit. They are vital to our team and we can't afford to have them sitting on the sidelines.

As for the captaincy, I'd close the books. Kosi is a certainty.

My guess would be that they didn't nominate.

I know the Saints are trying to be innovative but I don't think it's fair to have a culture where players are excluded from the leadership group (they shouldn't have to put their hand up) because "you know that they'll lead from the front regardless".

Milne in the leadership group. As an outside all I can say is interesting.

In all likelihood I think Fred's right and they decided not to nominate again.

I'm not sure why you think a leader should not have to put their hand up. If they don't want the added responsibility it is in their own and the clubs best interest to not make themselves available for the leadership group.

In any case Hamill and Hudghton will lead by example. They don't know any other way.

As for Milney, good on him. He's had to work harder than most to get a spot on an AFL list and has had to deal with a lot of off-field stuff in recent seasons. He's not only been able to maintain a consistent level of performance during some tumultuous times, and 61 goals in a season for a small forward pocket is a fantastic effort, but he's one of the most vocal players in training and on the field. From the outside it would appear to be a strange choice but the leadership group format developed by Grant Thomas seems to have been replicated by most other clubs and for good reason.

For those who don't know... Milne actually applied very seriously for a leadership group position at the start of 2005. He went to the length of making a video presentation for the same. However he couldn't get in.

This time he's been able to get in and partly because he has been contributing in terms of leadership as well.

Remember Rd 1 2005, after Riewoldt broke his collarbone, it was milne giving a spiel to the players.

Seriously, if you ask any1 else on saintsational, I don't think any1 even blinked at the idea of Milne joining the group.... its only outsides who seem to have an issue because they don't know the details.

They don't get it at St Kilda!

....and which clubs have replicated the St Kilda leadership model!

and Mifsud.???

...GT has peculiar ways....and still has not delivered to justify them.

BUT the fans still adore him!

Eh... "leadership group"... where was it heard about first?

Which clubs had rotating captains during the last year, besides St Kilda? Take a guess...sydney.

He's justfied enough. Pfft... if you are going to go on about it like this then there are about a dozen coaches which have to deliver.

On that basis,
What's wallace's delivered as a coach? Premiership? a few final series, nothing else.
What's clarkson delivered? No idea yet.
What's thompson delivered? A final series and a few quotes to the media.. what else?
......
Pfft
