Darren Minchington has been signed by Hawthorn

HAWTHORN has signed former St Kilda forward Darren Minchington as a delisted free agent.

The Hawks were mulling over whether to recruit the 24-year-old as a rookie or put him straight on to the senior list.

Will Langford's delisting and retirement, but mooted move to the rookie list since he is contracted until the end of 2019, opened up a spot for Minchington to join the senior list.

Injuries ruined Minchington's year – left knee surgery and hip issues being the main problems – and he didn't line up in a senior game.

He has managed 28 matches in his senior career since being recruited by the Saints in the 2011 NAB AFL Rookie Draft.

However, Minchington offers pressure up forward and he has an impressive side-step to escape tacklers in congested situations.

He has bagged three goals on each of the three times he has faced Geelong, which has been one of the Hawks' main rivals in the modern era.

"Darren has been unlucky with injury during his career, but we have seen him excel in the VFL despite these challenges," recruiting manager Mark McKenzie told hawthornfc.com.au.

"Darren is a young man of great character and we look forward to working with him to maximise his full potential."

Goddard trains with Blues as he seeks to revive AFL career

ST KILDA discard and 2014 first-round draft pick Hugh Goddard is training with Carlton in the hope of an AFL lifeline.

Goddard, the second cousin of ex-Saints and Essendon champion Brendon Goddard, whose own playing career is in the balance, was in danger of being an unfulfilled talent when he was delisted in late August.

NAB AFL DRAFT HUB Latest news, video and more

The Blues reportedly met with Goddard's management in July and all signs point towards the 196cm defender receiving a second shot at the highest level.

Goddard, 22, played eight of his 10 career matches in 2015, but he ruptured the Achilles tendon in his left leg a year later to kickstart his injury nightmare, then suffered turf toe in 2017.

The Geelong Falcons product's last match and only game this past season was in round 22 against Hawthorn, when he recorded six disposals and three tackles.

Goddard was dropped for the returning Jake Carlisle the next week and delisted soon after.

St Kilda's decision to recruit fellow key defenders Carlisle, Nathan Brown and Logan Austin in recent years made life even more difficult for Goddard.

Ex-Roo exploits new rookie rule to join the Demons

Nov 20, 2018 12:46PM

The AFL announced on Tuesday morning Wagner had withdrawn his nomination for this year's NAB AFL Draft, along with Maverick Weller and Keegan Brooksby, to take advantage of the AFL's new rookie rule.

Former Sun and Saint Weller will seek to reignite his career at Richmond after being delisted by St Kilda at the end of the 2018 season, while ex-Gold Coast ruckman Brooksby will get a second chance with reigning premier West Coast after impressing in the SANFL with South Adelaide.

Players who were previously listed and then cut or who have spent a year out of the AFL since retirement or delisting themselves no longer have to enter the draft to find their way to a new club.

A team cannot re-sign a player in the SPP the same year it delisted him unless he is overlooked in the drafts, such as in the case of Jacob Townsend at Richmond.

Players can't sign or train with a club until the SPP opens.

Ex-Saint Tom Hickey’s first home at 29 Widdop Crescent, Hampton East, sold to another first homebuyer.

Ex-St Kilda footballer Tom Hickey has gotten married and sold his house in the space of two weeks.

And he’s revealed the “wild ride” — which will also see him start training for reigning premiers the West Coast Eagles on Monday — kept him and wife Chloe too busy to feel nervous ahead of auction.

Hampton East market remains cheaper than its seaside neighbours — for now

Hickey picked up his first possession on the property ladder, a three-bedroom house at 29 Widdop Cres, Hampton East, six years ago.

The house at 29 Widdop Crescent, Hampton East, had multiple interested buyers — but only one bid.

Today he handballed the property to another first-home buyer in a post-auction deal.

It came two weeks after he wed partner Chloe Foreman in Queensland, and two days before the former Saint starts training with his new club.

And the pair would recommend the rollercoaster ride.

“It’s been wild, but it’s been fun,” Hickey said.

“Having the wedding made us forget about the house.”

Ms Foreman added that tackling three major life changes hadn’t left them with any time to be nervous.

“And now it’s on to the next chapter,” Ms Foreman said.

The pair have relocated to Western Australia.

Max King a Saint

The Saints have pounced on “special talent” Max King with pick 4 in the NAB AFL Draft.
We brought in two top 10 talents last year in Hunter Clark and Nick Coffield, and it’s really exciting to have another player of that calibre joining the clubSimon Lethlean
“One of the most special tall forwards in years.”

That’s the calibre of player the Saints have drafted in young spearhead Max King, according to Jay Clark of the Herald Sun.

St Kilda used its prized pick No. 4 to pounce on the supreme talent at the 2018 NAB AFL National Draft on Thursday night.

A product of the Sandringham Dragons, King boasts a rare mix of height, athleticism and elite skill, traits that have had recruiters salivating for more than two years.

The agile 204cm giant was widely touted as the likely No. 1 pick after his bottom-age year at level, talk that went into overdrive following the opening round of the TAC Cup this year.

King took the game by storm, booting eight goals and reeling in nine marks in a performance that turned heads across the industry.

But it’s not just his powerful ability in the air that has drawn attention throughout his junior career.

His deft ball-handling at ground level and ability to cover the ground are truly unique traits for a player of his size.

As has been well documented, the star Dragon suffered a season-ending ACL injury in April, cutting short hopes of teaming with twin brother Ben in the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships.

But that injury was the instigator for the bayside local to undertake his rehabilitation at RSEA Park, thanks to Sandringham’s partnership with the Saints.

St Kilda Head Physiotherapist Andrew Wallis has played a key role in King’s recovery, meeting the 18-year-old on a weekly basis to oversee his rehabilitation.

King was a regular face in the Saints’ gym, where he has methodically gone about building strength in his legs and adding size to his frame.

The selection sees a boyhood dream become a reality, with King – a life-long Saints fan who grew up idolising Nick Riewoldt – set to don the red, white and black in 2019.

“He’s a really special talent, and just an unbelievable athlete for his size,” Saints GM of Football Simon Lethlean told saints.com.au.

The way Max has approached his rehabilitation here at the Saints has been first-class, and we’ve been able to get an insight into the quality of person he is.
“We brought in two top 10 talents last year in Hunter Clark and Nick Coffield, and it’s really exciting to have another player of that calibre joining the club.

“The first step for him is continuing to complete his rehab, and our medical team will be incredibly diligent in that regard. Ultimately, it’s about the sustained impact he can have on our club for the next 10 years.

After Rd1 of the draft, our remaining draft picks have changed:

They're now #38, #43, #61 and #74

but that will probably be affected by trading again today

So after the draft -

Hickey -> Marshall
Freeman -> Hannebery
Stevens -> Kent
Goddard -> King
Weller -> Bytel
Wright -> Parker
Gilbert -> Hind
Minchington -> Young

And we have an open place on the rookie list after promoting Marshall? Or did Alabakis take that spot? Not sure how Cat A vs Cat B works.
