Watching yesterdays GF i noticed during the 3rd Qtr Bruce Wankavaney used the old "this is the premiership qtr" chestnut.
So i thought id check our so called premiership qtr record. So heres our third quarter efforts in our Grand Finals.

1913 Vs Fitzroy (who were known as the Maroons at the time, not the Lions)
Stk 1.5 Fitz 1.3
Not very impressive, yes technically we did win the qtr ( just) but we lost the game :(

1965 Vs Essendon ( who were known as the Bombers at the time , not the Drug Cheats)
Stk 1.3 Drug Cheats 5.8
Ess clearly were on the gear all those yrs ago as they smashed us. We lost game:(

1966 Vs Collingwood ( who were, and always have been referred to as The Filth )
Stk 3.3 Filth 2.4
Not what youd call a dominant qtr, but we did win and also won the Game :):):)

1971 Vs Hawthorn
Stk 4.3 Hawks 1.3
Despite having a good 3rd qtr and also trying to knock out half of the Hawks side, we lost game:(

1997 Vs Adelaide
Stk 2.2 Crows 6.1
This clearly was a Premiership Qtr effort. Sadly by Adelaide not by us. Shane Ellen?? WTF!!! We lost game:(

2009 Vs Geelong
Stk 2.4 Cats 2.3
Just won Qtr, just lost Game :(

2010 Vs Collingwood
Stk 3.3 Filth 0.5
Despite our best 3rd qtr effort since the 71 GF and keeping the Filth goaless ,once again we failed to win . Draw
REPLAY
Stk 3.1 Filth 5.3
Lost Qtr , sadly lost Game :(

So what do we make of this? Well obviously i am an extremely boring person who has too much time on his hands. And The Saints have never had a totally dominant 3rd qtr in a Granny. 71 & '10 were very honorable but we failed to win either game.
Hopefully in 2017 White and Lee kick a bagfull in the 3rd Qtr of the GF and we win:D:D Id like us to win one before im wearing incontinence pads and being spoon fed in a nursing home :p

While looking back over history in your post, thought it may be interesting to see what the Grand Final and Premiership records are of all clubs since the AFL started in 1990.

Premierships (11 teams)
  • Brisbane x 3
  • Geelong x 3
  • Hawthorn x 3
  • West Coast x 3
  • Adelaide x 2
  • Collingwood x 2
  • Essendon x 2
  • North Melbourne x 2
  • Sydney x 2
  • Carlton x 1
  • Port Adelaide x 1
Grand Final Years (14 teams)
  • Geelong x 7
  • Collingwood x 5
  • West Coast x 5
  • Brisbane x 4
  • Essendon x 4
  • Hawthorn x 4
  • Sydney x 4
  • Carlton x 3
  • North Melbourne x 3
  • St Kilda x 3
  • Adelaide x 2
  • Port Adelaide x 2
  • Fremantle x 1
  • Melbourne x 1
Teams not to appear in an AFL Grand Final
  • Gold Coast
  • GWS
  • Richmond
  • Western Bulldogs
Geelong has with seven (7) Grand Final appearances been consistently successful, with Collingwood and West Coast following up with five (5) grand finals. Saints over this time with three (3) Grand Finals have been mid table over this time.
The AFL draft, salary cap etc have shown that most clubs have had success, or the chance of the ultimate success. Professionally run and resourced clubs have more grand final appearances and ultimately more premierships.

Its probably important to keep it to AFL years anyway simply due to the fact that the VFL was never a fair competition until the draft was brought in.

Interestingly it was also said at some point during the GF coverage that in terms of revenue the top three clubs are ranked as follows:
1. WCE
2. Coll
3. Freo

So they are hardly a hard case story. In fact they are silver spooners.
