Opinion Saints Royalty

Was having a few beers with a couple of my Murri mates and one of them (a Geelong supporter) asked me whether Nicky Winmar really is highly regarded amongst Saints supporters.
I said, Mate he is Saints Royalty. We love him.
Got me thinking which players us supporters think of as Saints Royalty.
For me:
The Doc and all of the 66 side and coach.
Plugger
Barker
Harves
Reiwoldt
Lenny

Am I on the money???

I'd add the G-train to that list.

In my mind there were always 2 top 5s. The most loved and the best.

Top 5 best (in no order):

Riewoldt
Harvey
Stewart
Lockett
Baldock

Top 5 most loved (also in no order):

Barker
Winmar
Harvey
Baldock
Hayes
It’s a pretty small club really isn’t it no matter which way you look at it.
Naz might get there one day.

Its made doubly hard due to the different eras just having far different standards.

Like Riewoldt in the 1960's would have been on a different level to even the greats of the time. Imagine someone like Gawn rucking against the top guys of that time period.. it wouldn't even be a contest most of the time.

But its about bang on a list for both sides really.

Lockett
Harvey
Burke
Winmar
Loewe
Everitt
Rooey
Hayes
Kosi
Goddard
Ball (not on many lists but I loved him)
Dal Santo
Milne
Gehrig
Nas

My Favourites. Probably forgot a few.
There are some great names here but can’t agree with Kosi.We are talking royalt, Kosi had a patch of 4 odd games and that was pretty much his career. If I was to be really honest, I would say if Kosi had of delivered on his number 2 pick potential, we would have 2 premiership cups back at Linton Street, but potential is such a dirty word.

You are correct.

Kosi is saints royalty in my heart though I loved the big fella.

Shame he never got to reach his potential.

Royalty and best are two different categories. Royalty probably means revered for more than just playing achievements. So my royalty list in some sort of order

Barks
Spud
Breen
Reiwoldt
Harvey
Hayes
Baldock
Burke
Winmar.
Lockett (just on sheer ability. In the top 4 players of all time.

My namesake Verdun Howell needs to be considered. Brownlow Medalist, Vice-Captain in our Premiership team.

Was a regular for Victoria, AFL Hall of Fame, B&F winner. St Kilda Team of the Century as Full Back. Prototype of the modern attacking full backs.

Went forward in his latter years. Kicked 9 one day against Hawthorn. Great player.
