Peter Williams fronted the media for the first time as St. Kilda coach saying "I feel we have a long road ahead of us after winning the wooden spoon, but I believe with a firm youth policy, we can go far and end the suffering of the St. Kilda fans who felt they were on the edge of a dynasty after winning the 2018 flag".
Chase Perigo (28 yrs, 19 games) and Victor Terrington (30 yrs, 257 games) retired for the Saints. Then Williams axed a third of the list, delisting thirteen players, including club champion Robert Akers who had played 264 games for the Saints and still believed he had a couple of years left. "There is no room for sentiment in the modern game. The moment you bring sentiment into it, is the moment you no longer have 100% focus."
