To me he is developing nice, he will be hard to shift from the backline now.
How is he developing nice? I’m not knocking him, but I see him comprehensively beaten as a backman everytime he has played. I like his style, and he has a go, and keeps going, which is really important. No sulks. Now, don’t get me wrong, tonight could be the night, and I hope it is. But speaking of hope, that seems to be what it has been so far. And that we simply have no alternatives.

Week-on-week improvement. Limited training as a defender at AFL level prior to the move back. Thrown to the wolves as the primary lockdown full back. 21 years old

You are being very harsh

Yes, I am being harsh. And no apologies. If people say he is the new key defender and I don’t see it, I want to address the gap. what am i missing type of thing. No room to be nice inside that conversation, as long as there is no second-agenda.

We probably need to balance youth and experience if we want consistent performances.
I really feel when we have all our players fit we have more than enough seasoned players to have a good tilt at finals - Marshall , Steele , Hill , Sinclair , Macrae , Howard , Wilkie , Wood , Webster , Butler and then add on the guys that have been in the system for 3 or more years like Nas , Owens , Sharman , King , Henry , Higgins , Windhager , Camanitti , Phillipou , Stocker , Byrnes .

That would be a very strong team and I'm not even looking at the first or 2nd year players and atm guys like Wilson , Hall and Garcia who are most probably in our best 22.
I'm not even looking at Clark , Jones or Cordy.

If we are to put up a good challenge this year all the senior players need to have a good year and the younger group I mentioned need to really produce like Nas has been doing - but it's guys like Sharman , Owens , Windhager , King and Henry to me will determine where we end up this season.

How many 21 yr old full backs are there who you can confidently say are better than Caminiti?

He's competitive and hates losing—an underrated attribute when assessing whether someone is going to make it. Yes, he lacks defensive skill, and that’s why he’s been beaten by some very good forwards.

But he’s had his moments too, especially when it comes to intercept marking.

Given his age, I’d say there’s strong potential for him to go on and have an excellent career.

We’ve seen it time and time again: the big blokes take time. Basically, if they show even anything remotely promising when they’re young, they usually go on to become good players.

He is progressing fine , he may of been beaten but he has given plenty and I fully expect him to be a very good defender going forward.
The kid is ranked 2nd in marks per game which is outstanding for a rookie backman and averaging 15 disposals a game which is up with all the best defenders.
Every game he will be getting more confidence and when he knows he has cemented his position there will be no stopping him.
I never really rated him as a forward but as a defender I really think he will excel at it.

Hastie playing VFL, so assume a late change is Zak Jones in (as sub)?

It’s not quite as easy as abracadabra, snap your fingers and hey presto you have a key defender.

Of course it’ll take time, and more work. He’s 20 years old.

Agree 100%
I am 100% in with the ‘give the kid a chance’ ethos too. Or pathos which ever it is.
But I am putting on my competitive hat and thinking about this one.
As an exercise.
Kane Cornes just says ‘he’s just not a defender, period’ . Now we all love Kano, and deeply respect his opinions. NOT.
But , just say, some forwards go back and become defenders. Cowboy Neale was a full-back - that’s all I knew as a kid. Then later I found out he played forward. so let me ask, do these Forwards that become defenders tend to have be players that have had a long established career as a forward? what gave a Shane Wakelin a role as a full-back?
