It's unfortunate that up until Grant Thomas came to the club and sorted things out there was so much instability down at the St kilda. Otherwise some of the following players would still be there...

Spider Everitt
Wakelin bros
Barry Hall
Joel Smith

Seriously, saints would be unstoppable if they were all still at the club.

Does anyone remember who st kilda picked up out of the trades for these players?

Any coach with half a brain would've delisted Everitt. His last season with us was deplorable. Any GOP would've been delisted after that season. Add the fact that he's probably the most un-disciplined player in the league, and I'm sure GT made the right decision. Just look at the effect he's had at Hawthorn. They're the St Kilda of the past. Always having to drop players for not turning up to training, functions etc...

Shane Wakelin: Wasn't a great player for us. Only blossomed when at Collingwood. Shouldn't have been delisted, but he's no huge loss.

Darryl Wakelin: He left because he wanted to go home. Nothing GT could do about that.

Barry Hall: Same story as Everitt, except it seems he's finally grown up. We got Nick Dal Santo from the Swans so I'm not complaining.

Joel Smith: Left well before GT arrived. The idiots running the club at the time thought he'd never recover from a serious knee injury.

On the other hand, if we DIDN'T have GT, we'd still be picking up duds left right and centre because the coach thinks we need a defender, forward, midfielder etc regardless of their talent.

GT has given John Beveridge full responsibility for recuiting, he's developed numerous leaders, has got the best out of the young guys and has the place running well. He is above-average in terms of tactics, however is behind the likes of Roos, Sheedy, Worsfold etc..He has acknowledged that he is behind most recent GF winning coaches, so he has employed two brilliant tactitians in Rendell and McGuane, with Cripps and Mifsud providing valuable support.

The fact is that GT is the best thing that's happened to the club since Robert Harvey, but due to the fact that he is not a self-adoring media-darling he is constantly critisized. If the majority of the football public were capable of forming their own opinion without the media guiding them, they'd realise that GT has turned the club around from being a pathetic rabble (1999-2001) into a power-house club on and off the field.

Holy crap!!

I think you guys are a tad highly strung.

How come whenever a geelong bloke posts a message on your board (or any board for that matter) that even mentions the saints you guys immediately think we're a having a crack at you and putting your team down?

I seriously wanted to know who you got!! Wasn't Dal Santo part of those trades? I'd give half those players I mentioned for that guy. Bloody hell, if I knew it was such a sore point I wouldn't have mentioned it.

I didn't bag GT- If you read what I wrote, I inferred that he had brought stability to your club. For those of you who don't realise, stability is a good thing. I quote (myself):

"It's unfortunate that up until Grant Thomas came to the club and sorted things out there was so much instability down at the St kilda"

Like it or not, before GT came to the club the saints were in a bad way and lost a few players. And so, before I cop more abuse: I was just wondering which of your current list of players (a list I think is probably the #1 in the league) did you get for those guys? If no-one knows, I'll find out somewhere else.

Players delisted / traded in 2000

Matthew Carr: To Fremantle where he is still playing well.
Sam Cranage: To Carlton as part of the Aaron Hamill deal.
Joe McLaren: Off to the Roos where he was to play a few more AFL games.
David Sierakowski: To the Eagles
Darryl Wakelin: To the Power where he was to become a Premiership player.
Fred Campbell: Unknown
Damien Monkhorst: To a brief sojourn in minor football
Ben Thompson: Retired
Tony Brown: To the SANFL
Jason Heatley: Bobbed up in the Tasmanian VFL team
Kurt Heazlewood: Unknown
Gavin Mitchell: Did he return to the West?
Murray Pitts: Unknown
Steven Sziller: To the Tigers for a brief extension of his career.
Shane Wakelin: Delisted and on his way to the Pies.

Players we got in 2000

Craig Callaghan: From the Dockers and expected to add much needed grunt.
Matthew Capuano: It was hoped he would free up Spider and allow him to spend more time up forward.
Fraser Gehrig: Coming home after success with the Eagles.
Aaron Hamill: To the Saints after his well publicised spat with “Jack” Elliott.
Steven Lawrence: To his Dad’s club after some up and down years with the Lions.
Brett Moyle: From the Rookie list.
Mark Gale: Ex Docker.
Justin Koschitzke: Number 2 in the national draft.
Robert Powell: From the Tigers.
Nick Riewoldt: Number 1 in the national draft
Daniel Wulf: Taken in the national draft
Brett Voss: Picked up in the pre season draft from the Lions.

Barry Hall played for us in 2001 (hence under Grant Thomas) and was traded for draft pick #13 from which we gained Nick Dal Santo. Barry wished to leave and passed up more money at Collingwood to go to the Swans.

Spider Everitt became Peter Everitt when he moved to Hawthorn, he had been given too many last chances at St Kilda and it was inevitable that he go.
We gained draft picks #6, and #22 for Everitt. We on-traded draft pick #6 and #37 for Barry Brooks and used #22 to draft Matthew Ferguson.

Comment: The reason that some of us responded so touchily is that you cant have your cake and eat it too.
These guys look good on paper, but were part of the problem at St Kilda - our much publicised "culture" problem. Getting rid of them improved the psyche of the remaining players immeasurably, their trades gave us some of our stars, and their departure freed up salary for other stars.

True. I remember that period. Hall and Everitt were more trouble than they were worth- the last blokes you'd want around influencing your new draft picks. It worked out okay though, I'd rather have Dal santo than hall!

could add M.Lappin to that list as well.

hahahah Barry Hall left your rabble to get something the saints couldnt offer him. Stability and a premiership. He got both, you got Del Santo and a caning in the final against us last year and still no flag in 40 years. ;)

hahahaha

Yeah right as if Joel Smith was a big loss :)
BTW he left years before GT came to St.Kilda and they got Del Santo with the draft pick for Hall, a very fair trade you must admit.
If you want to point a finger at someone's who ruining a club look at Denis Pagan. GT has fixed St.Kilda around, remember what they were like under Watson/Blight.
Sheesh some fans have no clue.

Don't worry smelly cat, it is a decent enough question.

Anyway, somebody correct me if i'm wrong but didn't Hamill come as part of the D. Wakelin trade??

D.Wakelin to Port for pick 4 - pick 4 and Sam Cranage for Hamill??

Also we traded Barry Hall for pick 13, 17 and 45. With 13 we got Dal Santo, we traded pick 17 for Heath Black (the pick which somehow ended up at the cats and is James Kelly).

Shane Wakelin delisted due to injuries at the time.

Everitt traded for picks 6 and 22...

Smith let go due to injuries and the contract he wanted.
