I'll they should (A) Kick out the drunken aboriginals that squat there and (B) Improve sporting facilities etc so people have a reason to go there. Vic Park Friday night race meets in summer with good facilities would be a certain winner.

Not one single tourist comes to Adelaide to look at the parklands.

And where should they go to once they are kicked out?

Preserving the parklands isn't about tourism.

Whilst I have sympathy for the pro-development lobby, its also fair to say that once the parklands are gone they will be gone forever. Like anything balnace is needed.

The Govt could legislate th ACC out of existence if it watned to but who has the guts to do that. Then they alone would be responsible for the city and would have to wear the blame for lack of progress.

exactly, friday summer night twilight races at Vic Park would be awesome and would, and has drawn big crowds. What a way to start a weekend?

I just cannot believe the ACC has so much power and have so little vision. They are a disgrace to the city. I just wish there was a politician who had the balls to do something about it.

I love this city, I have travelled the world, been to some of the greatest cities on this planet, but this is where I want to live. People will leave this great city with people like this in charge. They have to stop keeping certain groups happy, regardless of how powerful they may be, and be prepared to take one for the good of the city in the long run. They have to start thinking ahead, not just in the present.

The Vic park fiasco baffles me, we have one of the greatest motorsport events in the world and the government are allowing the ACC and others to stop progress? what the ****?

Martin Hamilton-Smith.

he has my vote, but is it all talk?

I am usually a labor voter at state level, but they are losing my very quickly.

Probably. He seems genuine enough though. Like you I voted state labor last election, but I wont be this time. Definitely time for change. He has promised to get rid of the ACC and the Parklands Preservation Society, so that is definitely a starting point.

Need a bit of flair in state politics. I've had enough of Rann, and to be honest it's not as if the Liberals will completly ruin this state in 3-4 years. And if they do...well they might as well just dismantle their party and leave SA forever because they will never be re-elected.

I am certainly not happy with the huge differences in social outcomes faced by Aboriginal people versus white people in this country, no.

This is what gets me. If I go camp in the Parklands I would get a fine, possibly arrested. But If I were an aboriginal they would just let me go, out of fear of being called a racist. Its pathetic. Homeless'ness can affect anyone, so why should some homeless due to enthic background get treated any different.

Ann Moran and the entire ACC should be sacked.

Can the government just overule what they say?

Harbo actually isn't that bad a Mayor. Its more the cronies around him who got voted into office with only 500 votes.

Although I don't think Harbo deserves to be on $250,000 a year with only 6,000 votes.

If you go ‘camp in the parklands’ you may get a bit more than that.

My mate slept in the parklands once, got beaten up and had his phone and wallet stolen by the homeless. lol.

Emphasize the word camp – not the act of camping.

Gather that through and you will get a bit more than a fine if you ‘go camp in the parklands’

If this Hamilton Smith guy is promising change for Adelaide CBD then hes got my vote we are falling behind all the other capital cities, look at the perth they have a subway like train running through the city now that would never get approved in Adelaide

You know Adelaide City Council is struggling to make the HARD deceisions when they said at the last election (not the one that just occured) that they wanted a new vision and design for Victoria Sq. Nearly 6 years later, nothing.

Stop whinging and do something about this if you feel so strongly about it. Get off your butts and mount a campaign.

The Parklands Preservation Society have a web site. Constantly emailing them with your grievances would be a start. They did for what they believed in and got what they wanted. But moaning in a web site forum isn't going to make it happen.

But you have to be civil about it, otherwise they will simply block you.

Write letters to the editor to the rag here.

Organise a rally. You'll get nowhere if you don't

Do something but stop moaning.

But something tells me it'll be like *****ing into the wind.

The classic response to the Save The Parklands crowd should be citing the example of the Adelaide Oval lights in the mid-1990's.

Remember the arguments against: Detracting from the heritage and "feel" of the oval, detracting from views of the city from those working class battlers living in North Adelaide just behind the ground, light spillage affecting residents etc etc etc.

So what happened? The whole process was long, protracted and tedious. Finally a compromised was reached (at considerable expense) to install retractable lights. The lights were retracted once, stuffed up, were raised up again and have stayed that way ever since. Permanent lights could have been put in from day 1 and saved a truck load of money.

The whole process made the entire city look like a laughing stock. It's funny how in hindsight the fear mongering arguments against just look nonsensical and deluded.

Like I said earlier. the ACC should be relieved of any role in planning and development of Adelaide's CBD. It's too important for the rest of the state to be shafted by self interest and short sightedness.

Yes true, white people have been very harshly treated right throughout the history of this country.

Maybe this is a bit too far outside the square, I don't know. Why don't they build a stadium with permanent living quarters either underground, or nearby on the site that could be used on game days as storage facilities etc while ensuring the "tenants" are not in the vicinity until the match is over and the crowds dispersed. If you look at AAMI, there are truckloads of rooms, corners etc that could be used to "house" the campers and other homeless.

Proviso would be that the areas would have to be kept clean and any vandalism would result in arrest and prosecution.

Maybe I am going a bit soft in my old age, or maybe dementia is setting in. Either that or the idea is too clever by half. Maybe both.....

Personally, I am glad that the "rannstand" didn't get approved by the ACC, not because I don't want Victoria Park redeveloped but rather because taxpayers shouldn't have to pay for it. If it was a general access grandstand, then it would be fine but why should we pay for a great big air conditioned corporate box for MPs and business leaders, when the rest of us have to put up with hot, dirty, uncomfortable, expensive seating when watching the Clipsal. Make them pay for it FFS they can afford it already!

The people on here saying that we are falling behind other states are dead right: I could rant all day about our public transport system, hospital system, roads, etc but sadly I don't think voting for Hamilton-Smith will fix the problems. Erecting more and more red light/speed cameras is the government's first and foremost priority.

This arguement always riles me. The Grandstand was to fulfill the role of pits for the cars and stables for the horses. Sure it was also going to be a corporate facility, but that is where the money is. Are you against the new Grand Stands at the Adelaide Oval? They are to be built in the Members, where the great unwashed don't get to enjoy the facilities - the government is putting quite a bit dough for this venture as well. Twighlight race meetings in the city could have been a major event in this town. I've been to a few and they are good days. The new Grandstand would have facilitated this, but alas due to narrow minded old farts and naysayers caught in a time warp, it doesn't eventuate. You've got to improve, update, move with the times, spend a bit to keep up, or you start going backwards. Adelaide has been going backwards for some time now and the idiots in charge seem to think this is appropriate trend.

Yes, yes, concrete the lot and paint it green

Right.

But just on that, where does it say Adelaide has to be ringed by green areas? You're not on the Council are you?

How about looking forward to maximise what we've got in the conditions we'll be facing, rather than continuing on to plan by looking backwards?
