I stand correcte
Wrong. If we want who-ever the father son is, then we have the right to use our next available pick on them. Eg. if Daniher was this year & GWS wanted him at #1, we could nominate to pick him up with our first selection in the draft which would be a 3rd round pick.
I stand corrected. :thumbsu:

Give Little a break guys. He would have done all he could under the circumstances.
Oh please.

He came out talking tough, directly challenging the AFL to a standoff, saying that the AFL had lost the support of other clubs. In response the AFL unsurprisingly leaked information that embarrassed us and James Hird immensely. In his short tenure, he managed to almost single-handedly make this process worse, and he has helped to damage our reputation.

He needs to go.

Re: punishments, http://www.afl.com.au/news/2013-08-27/live-updates-dons-at-afl-house says "...2013 and 2014 national drafts, stripped of round one and two picks, but will get pick at end of round one in 2014."

EFC presser says "Loss of our first two draft selections in the 2013 National Draft and our 2nd round pick in 2014"

Someone needs to sort that shit out quick smart.
Doesn't matter either way because finishing top and winning the flag in 2014 you end up with the last pick of each round.

This x 1000.

Dropped in at the last minute into an impossible situation and had to do the best he could.

He's retired and has $800m to play with, but instead he's doing this shit for nothing.

We're lucky to have such experienced and steady hands on our board. Not many clubs could lose a president and have somebody of this calibre to step in. I strongly believe he's done the best he could.

I know that we all have a right to be angry, especially at the club for what happened in 2011-2012, but some of you need to pull your ******* heads in. All this shit like "gonna vote Little out", "we took it up the ass" etc. is stupid. He did all he could under the circumstances, for all we know the AFL may have proposed something like:

- No points for 2013-2014. You finish last on the ladder and are forever labelled as wooden spooners for these years.
- Hird banned for life.
- $5 million fine
- No picks for three years.

Essentially, we may have been hit with a HTB type punishment. We don't know what happened that forced Little to backtrack. It may have been the AFL and their dirty tricks, they may have threatened to persecute on Thymosin-beta 4 if we didn't back down. We may never know what was the reason we backed down, and one thing for sure is that Little wouldn't come out and say "we copped it up the arse because the AFL threatened with this and that, and they are corrupted wankers". Imagine Little came out and said "we view these punishments as grossly unfair bla bla bla", imagine the media shitstorm. He would just be giving Caro and Fatprick more ammunition to slag us off if he said that. It's basic PR management.

The punishments suck. What happened at the club was pathetic, and we are now paying the price. As I said before, it could be WAY worse. We could have had players being canned for two years. We may have been facing certain extinction. The worst thing we could do is turn on the club and become another Richmond, and put ourselves in a downward spiriling shithole. It's fine to question the club, but calm down.

We are Essendon. A $2 million will not destroy us like it would to Bulldogs, North or the Demons. History will go down and show us as finishing 9th and not 18th and on 0 points. And to top it off, Hirdy will be back next year. He will definitely be back to lead us into September and hold up #17. It sucks, but come round 1, 2014, all of us will be eager and excited to watch our players come out and play without an ASADA/AFL cloud hanging over our heads

Staggered by the penalties. I guess the bluffing last week really was all about being called cheats and not about penalties. I can see the point of that now that i'm getting over the shock. Money and draft picks come and go, but the being officially labeled as cheats would damage the club for decades. Essendon has always been a club of integrity and it retains that status despite what the haters say. Kids wont be put off adopting the club at school, etc etc.
Exactly what happened behind closed doors over the course of this debacle would be fascinating to know. I do wonder if Hird should have known to go earlier to mitigate penalties? You get the feeling that the club just couldn't believe that the AFL would be so harsh for mismanagement... Understandably!

Everyone, get your shit together. Get your mourning out of your systems tonight. This is the hardest hour that the club has had to endure, and if they've ever needed support, it's now. Quit the whinging, and the bloodlust for the board, and start thinking about next year.

The finals penalty was largely symbolic, as we would've been beaten in week 2, if not week 1
The draft penalties are less than what Carlton copped for cheating
The fine is less than what Carlton paid, when allowing for the appreciation in its value over 12 years.

At the end of the day, we put our players in harms way. We all feel the penalties are excessive, but they are what they are. Make no mistake. That contract extension announcement was, in our own way, a **** you to the AFL.

I've previously said it, and I'll say it again, because it's so important. What doesn't kill you will make you stronger. We are a strong, proud club, and the best way to rebound from this is to make sure we do the needful to be around deep in September 2014.

25 August 2014. Start counting the days.

That does make sense and the bold bit nearly gave me goosebumps! But, it makes me feel a little uneasy that someone held Hird to ransom with something - was it a threat of annihilation of the club, or further drug charges?
