If anyone can actually tell me what other clubs stood to gain by siding with Essendon in this matter? I mean, was it possible for them to remain neutral at all? I just don't see that what happened yesterday was 17 clubs effectively declaring war on Essendon. Others may see it that way and that is their opinion.
Nothing unless there was a big block of clubs who thought the process was shit. Then there might be enough to put some pressure on the AFL. But with a lot of clubs currently getting funding from the AFL or owned by the AFL this was never going to happen. There would be a few clubs that might have wanted to side with us but they'd be sticking their necks out and for no real advantage to them.

If this latest deal being reported is true, I wonder if it is the reason Hird is the only one to start court proceedings, didn't do The Word From Hird, and didn't do the presser today.

Sadly it seems the ducks are starting to line up. I can only hope this is a troll of some sort before we hand down a massive F U to all and sundry.

That's fine, and if Hird has ****** up then he goes no questions asked. To be sacked for taking a personal drug which is legal that has nothing to do with anything would be ridiculous.

The club is always bigger than the individual, you still don't sell the individual short to appease to big tops. If they have proof Hird ****** up, then he goes, if they don't, then **** em.

Everyone wants this to be over, but I'd hate for us to fold for no reason other than 34 pages of hearsay and speculation.
i agree with you completely.

sadly, i feel a deal will be struck that restricts the release of "evidence" or lackthereof

No, ASADA should investigate Geelong (or at least widen the investigation against Thompson, Dank, and Robinson).

Then they should also investigate Gold Coast, because Dank, Robinson and Thompson were there too.
Then they should also investigate Everton, as they also had a Gary Ablett playing for them.
Then they should also investigate Carlton because they also wear Blue.

well, apart from it seems rumply, I'm pretty much on my own. Because I'd be inclined to take that deal. I'd hate to see Hird go, but if we protect our draft picks, I believe that to be the most important thing.

Essentially, in a negotiation like this, both sides have to give up ground. Just saying "nup" is for me not realistic. We have to make concessions, in reality. I've felt for a while now that if we can quarantine this shit to this year then we should. I'd rather lose points than picks, x1,000,000.

Unfortunately Hird has ****** up, like it or not. If he has to go it sucks balls, but no-one is bigger than the club.

As well, it gives us a fresh start, and sadly I'm starting to think that's what we need.
Disagree. Unless the charges against Hird are just, throwing a club champion under the bus can ruin a club for years. If Hird chose to accept it on the clubs behalf that might be a different matter, but I'd still disagree with it.

I'd rather see it in court and risk on field penalty.

The club was always going to be happy to negotiate if the AFL would make a reasonable offer. We were honest in out determination to take this to court but if there is an offer that all parties (Hird included) are happy with I'm not sure why we wouldn't go for it.

Players safe and no lose of picks are the two biggest boxes ticked, it is now just a matter of whether or not the AFL will consed on the nature of the charges so we don't come away labelled as drug cheats.

I understand your perspective, but I disagree. I think court is a bad outcome for everybody.

I would want Hird to agree to this penalty if it were to occur, btw

Draft picks are the life blood of the club - losing 2 years of first rounders in today's football will drag us down for years to come as free agency can only help so much.
Tell that to Melbourne. I'd reckon a lot of them would give back all their draft picks if they could take back the sacking of Norm Smith.

Wrong. Did you see the analysis of Hawthorn's team on AFL360 the other night? I think they had 4 players in the top 10 and about 8 in the top 20 picks, quite a few of whom were traded for their picks.

The point being made was that having high draft picks aren't the be all and end all of a successful team, but that drafting smartly is more important. Just look at Sydney.

You mean just under half of their best 22 were first round picks? Drafting smart if important because thats how you get the gems like Kommer late in the draft, but first round picks are still really important too.

If we do lose our points but keep our draft picks, exactly where do we stand in the draft order? Would it be due to where we are right now, would we shift to last in the round? I can not possibly see us being punished but getting number 1

I bet we'd be given last choice in each round.

No its not wrong - of course drafting smartly is important, just as important as having decent picks or players to trade - losing your good picks costs bigtime years down the track.

To think it wouldnt matter is foolish.

Its hard to argue anyone has done more for the essendon football club than James. If the club gave him up now it would destroy his love of the club that he has basically dedicated his entire life too.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion but for me, im not giving up on Hird now.

All I want for him is a chance to defend himself properly, I dare anyone to argue he has had a fair chance to do that so far.

As others have pointed out dropping non existent doping charges if Hird resigns is ludicrous.

I'm thinking that losing one of our greatest champions, and favourite sons, in this fashion is something that will last forever. I don't like it at all.

I also think that Hird deserves the opportunity to take it as far as he wants to.

This is his reputation and life that's going to be affected forever regarding this, not ours. If he wants to fight, especially in lieu of what appears to be a massive smear campaign to discredit him, then I think we owe it to him to trust and believe.

I am against the deal, any deal. I want it taken to the Supreme Court now.

guys, before 2011 there was no S0. So Dank had a lot more freedom with the games he played at Geelong, sadly
However, he still could have been providing supplements that weren't approved for human use. Think of the players.

That is key, we can't hang Hird out to dry. It has to be his decision, and his alone.

If Hird was okay with it without pressure and drug cheat stigma was officially and publicly removed from the charges by the AFL with a press conference, and Essendon extended Hird's contract as senior coach to ensure he came back then I could live with it, but would not be happy.

Oh and at the press conference, James Hird could piss on Demetriou's face Panesar style. Without this, no deal.
