The Veterans list bit will reduce this effect somewhat, but then, if all our veterans retire next year(we won't have any eligible for another year or so), we'll effectively cull our list from 40 to 38, that two less players to fit under the cap, even if only half their salaries contributed to our Cap, we'll still have less players to fit under the salary cap.

um, yes. if 2 players retire we will have 2 players less on the less.

poor maths stiffy, but maybe there is something there.

Goody 350k
edwards 350k
Macca 350K

OK. but that would give us 700 coming off wouldn't it?
Why poor maths? He did say 4 players with only 2 on the vet list.

And usually will be replaced through drafting, but if 2 veteran listed players retire and we don't have any veterans to replace them with, we can't replace them through drafting. Our list is currently 38+2 veterans(with half the veterans salaries contributing to the SC), if we don't have any veteran listed players we can only have 38, with no veterans and hence no extra salaries under our cap.

You will have to dumb it down for me.

IIRC we only have 2 players on our veterans list. Lets say that these are their salaries:

Goodwin - 350K
McLeod - 350K
Edwards - 350K
Burton - 350K

Thats 1.4M in salaries. If 2 players are on the veterans list, then 350K is outside the salary cap which leave 1.05M thats counted in the salary cap.

If we have 3 veteran listed players then the number is a bit different

There is still 1.4M in salaries but this time 346.5K (3 * 115.5K)is outside the cap which still leaves around 1M to play with if all 4 go at the same time which IMHO is unlikely.

IIRC No matter how many you have on the list, the most you will save is 1 salary if they are all on the same income. 1/2 for 2, 1/3 for 3 etc.
but it allows you to have a bigger playing list and a smaller rookie list.

Ouch, Stiff mentioned 4 veterans.

IMO, the 2 counted vets (Macca & Goody) would be on approx 1.0M, but only half counting towards the cap - ie. $500K.

Tyson & Bird closer to probably $800K.

So that is a total of approx $1.3M counted towards the cap.

Scenario 2011
IMO, only 1 or 2 will play on. Goody (as giving up the captaincy) + Burton/Macca. Can't see Edwards continuing.

If Goody only plays on, then that may cost us say $250K towards the cap, freeing up $1.05M to take on 2 more players on the main list + 1 more rookie. Given new draftees & growth in cap, that does leave us some room to negotiate with the likes of Danger.

If Goody + Burton/Macca play on, that may cost us $450K-$500K towards the cap. That frees us up $800K-$850K to pay for 2 more players. Tighter than previous (more likely) scenario, but still will be enough space to move.

AFC have shown in the past they are very good at pricing player contracts. I have no reason to doubt that they know what they are doing in keeping this talented young list together for the next few years.

You do mean as a player but not captain for Goody, don't you Kane?

yep, whoops, my bad :o

We saw this year what an injury-free Goody meant. Set up so many goals from HBF. Hope for more of the same, but as playing non-captain in 2011.

that's because Burton is likely to be on a buck fifty.

Burton would be the lowest paid of the 3. However, I took 350K as an average salary for all 4. I am sure that Goodwin and most likely McLeod would be on more than 350K. Edwards would be on about 350K and Burton less but averaged over 4 players I don't think its too far off the mark to assume that the average salary of the 4 players is 350K

Either way, if all 4 retire at the same time (IMHO unlikely) then we would have about 1M to play around with next year.
