Salary cap issues

Danger's the only one who if they play very well, their contracts will increase. If KNights has a bumper year, he'll get a similar (maybe even less) contract. If Tippo has a bumper year, he'll probably still drop a bit.

I reckon it would be more about the fringe benefits kind of stuff rather than just the cash, especially considering the tax bracket most players would find themselves in. Cars, fuel cards, holidays, dinners, phones, TAFE/uni fees, etc..

Would be almost impossible for the AFL to track most of this stuff.

Actually on this, I believe that the AFLPA pays for 3 years of tertiary education for all members, though I think it may be when you retire/are delisted. It's mostly about making sure that those who don't succeed have something to fall back on after football.

I think its just a bit of misinformation from the club personally. Maybe Trigg means that we are up to a cap level that we are comfortable with atm and don't plan to spend over that. We did have to extend some contracts this year (e.g Walker) so that might affect our spending. The club would be trying to free up space for next year to keep some of our more expensive players (e.g Danger and Tippett). Also we might be trying to get Davis to lower his price if we are genuinely interested. Regardless, he will probably get picked up by one of the WA teams.

This was my read of it too.

The club (right or wrong) would have it's strategy in place in terms of player payments and retention - it's probably now too late to throw a Leon Davis, who would command an above average salary, into the mix.

Exactly, it would be stupid of the club to be not paying as close to 100% of the cap as possible every year.

If you have cap room, front load for players so that you don't come under pressure later.

e.g. Player X is on 600k over 3 years, rather than 200k per year, if we can give them 300k this year then we free up 50k for each of the two years after that.

I think the Melbourne Football club could easily afford to find the salary difference to fit Mitch Clark under the 2012 salary cap. From 2008 to about 2011 the Melbourne Football Club financial position was almost dire until they got a new multiyear multimillion dollar sponsor late this year. Because they were in financial hardship, under AFL rules they were only allowed to pay 92.5% of the salary cap ($8.21 Million – 7.5% ($615,750) = $7,594,250.00).

Add that to the money they set aside to pay Tom Scully plus the increased inflation for 2012 salary cap, plus the extra 7.5% of the 2012 ($8,780,000) salary cap and they easily make up the difference.

The Crows on the other hand, have been always paying the full 100% of the cap or their about. Take that extra $615,000 (7.5%) that everyone has to pay and divide it between the top 20 players and it only works out to be about $30,000 per players.

Back in early August when contract negotiations were starting, I don’t think the AFC would have anticipated getting their hands on a potential All Australian player come late October so keeping that $450,000 up their sleeve would not have been an option.

Did Trigg say we were close to 100% OR close to what the club wants to pay.

I would bet we pay around 95-98% of cap space. This gives us room to move with signing players who "spike" in development/demand, and not get into the mess St Kilda find themselves in.

We had enough cap space to offer Davis more money than any 21 year old in the history of the club. Yet there were not enough signings (IMO) to take up that cap space slack. Even Walker, the club would have budgeted for his increase, and by all accounts that was pretty much the agreed amount he signed with. To keep Davis the club would have been in excess of the 98% cap space region.

Next year will be interesting, with Tip Danger and Sloane (??) coming out of contract. Three of our more important players, and not to mention most marketable.

BTW dont get sucked into the media guessing it is Tip who is our player over $600k. I have heard our highest paid player is Thommo. Which makes sense as he is our best. The AFL never released the names of the guys in the Salary Bands, just the number each club have in each band.

What makes the better story. "AFC Best player on $600+k" or "Underperforming AFC Gold Coast born flight risk Kurt Tippett on $600+k"

From what I understand the issue the Crows have is that Davis and his manager are shopping a two year deal for his services. I'm not sure if the Crows would break their 30 year old one year contract deal that they have going but in the unlikely scenario that they did, they couldn't afford two years of Davis on the basis of wanting to keep other younger players.

It is a pity though, the thought of Davis and Johncock swapping between forward and back would be nice but still, we have that mighty warrior Tambling to come back.

Knighta is on a big deal, not sure on specifics, expires end of next year I think.
Knights re-signed at the end of 2010, because there was the huge shitstorm about him leaving for Richmond when they went on a recruiting binge.

It was two years so he'll have to be re-signed at the end of next year. Don't have an article sorry, but the pay packet would have been significant.

There you have it people. No salary cap issues, just keeping room for player retension next year.

They have hit the limit they want to pay, and are a few percentage points away from 100% AFL cap limit.

Makes sense and is good business sense to allow some room to move.

Running at 100% does not allow for market fluctuation of player worth. Look at St Kilda and Collingwood for those issues. I doubt Geelong pay 100%.
