My work mates and I have been discussing club salary caps and which team has enough space in 2013 to land a big name player (if any).

I was thinking my club West Coast would have enough room to land a big fish next year due to possible retirements of some of our senior players.

Also on a separate rant, I believe player contracts/salarys/pay structures should be available to members/supporters/public similar to that of the NBA. I understand club contracts are very complexed due to some being front ended and some back ended and so on, but I believe we as members have the right to know what each players earns to make our own assessments on their value to our team.

So, just wondering which clubs out there would have cap room to land a top tier player in the comming years??

Seriously, why would anyone who will never make a decision for anything at the club, especially list management have "the right to know"?

The only decision you need to make is whether you want to buy a membership or not.

Do you care to let everyone on here know what your wage is?

So if you worked for a publicly listed company, governement, not-for-profit organisation, etc (so most jobs) you would be happy for you salary to be posted for all to see?

I would have thought that Glass and Cox may already be on the veterans list so most of their salary won't be counted anyway plus you will be stumping a bit of cash over the next few years to keep shuey, nic nat, gaff and your other young stars happy.

The biggest leagues in the world (NBA, MLB, EPL) its common knowledge what a players earns. Whats the difference between knowing what an AFL coach or his assistants are earning to the players?? We even know what Andy D the CEO gets!

Good point about list management and hving nothing to do with it, but really whats the big secret? I dont want to know the exact amout they earn just what tier they fall into(pay bracket eg. 200k-250, 400k-500 etc), we could then compare players throughout the league in the same teir.

I pay my membership fees to the club who then pays the players, if i was in the same situation i'd be happy for the public to know what i earned (which by the way is a pittence to an AFL player). Pretty sure its public knowledge what the Prime Minister and State Ministers earn each year also!

Considering sporting organisations are afforded a privileged position in society whereby they don't have to pay tax, I'd say complete transparency should be a goal, yes.

Theres also the salary cap scandals across several clubs in several codes, that has served to reduce public confidence in the league.

Me, I say publish it all.

Re the space 2013 & beyond part of the title, all planning may come to nothing when GWS comes a calling.

Take the Pies & Pendles, if it comes to match or lose him ... not sure how many clubs have the flex in their contracts to match GWS money because if they do, the next group of players is looking at a wage drop.

Veterans list rules changed now as long as the player has had 10years at the club and is 30 100k of their salary goes to the veterans list but you can put as many players who meet the requirements on the list where as before you could only put two players per club on the veterans list.

That said the Cats will be in a great position for FA given that we have had the Ottens, Mooney, Ling and Milburn retirements this year an the change to veterans list means we can put 7 players on the list this year for a 700k TPP saving this year alone see's us with a tidy little sum of money to be able to make offers to other players or be in a positon to match any offers to our own players

Kwality,

If you'd paid attention, you'd know Cloke is going to be as big an issue as Pendlebury, as any club can bid on Cloke.

Welcome to the new reality - dont let your good players contracts expire.

I started this thread a few weeks ago explaining why I think Freo could be in a good position with the salary cap.

However this good work could be undone depending on the new veterans rule. I'm waiting to see something more official but the difference between the new and old rule could cost us more than 500K of cap space.

Don't quote me as these are what I have heard. :p

We are currently paying 96% of our cap.

We use very little of our $500k marketing allowance according to a newspaper article last year I can't be bothered finding again.

We are currently paying the vast majority of David Hale's $400k or so contract which expires this year.

We are paying Urquhart's contract which is in the neighbourhood of $350k which expires this year.

Our future fund distribution I believe will be $3.4m this year, which replaces the $1.4 SDF or whatever it was called. We also will be making an additional $1.8m from the Tasmanian games and according to the AFL income equalisation study, they want us to go from $26m to $28m in football department spending, which includes player payments. They want us to spend as much on players as other clubs do.

I am sure part of the current capacity has already been allocated for future contract renewals but I would imagine we have a fair amount of space to throw some decent cash at a restricted free agent, especially if we do not plan on retaining Urquhart.

just on references to cap space when retirements/ex player salaries happen this year remember the min cap has gone to 95% which is just under 400k. so at maximum you would have 400k space not allowing for retirements of next year.

before you could only put two players per club on the veterans list.
My understanding was that clubs could have more than 2 veterans, but the % of their salary that wasnt counted under the cap was reduced.

2 Vets, 50% of each was not counted
3 Vets, 33% of each wasnt counted

Also I believe clubs were allowed a combined number of veterans/rookies outside the list. So a club with 2 veterans could have two less rookies than a club who had no veterans.

Do the new rules allowing for unlimited Veterans restrict rookie numbers? Are the veterans all inside the list?
Do you have a link to the new rules?
