This could come back to hurt us, it is a very serious injury regardless of his age. We all know Nathan Brown has sturggled to come back from his broken leg and was never the same...i hope bleasey can make a full recovery and get back to 100% pre injury. The danger with compound fractures is infection which could lead to ongoing problems.

Tough news as i have seen a video on youtube and he has great talent. But some wieghts while he cant run wont hurt his frame.

The club should give him a years supply of four and twenty pies and some high carb beer and chain him to the bench press until pre-season starts.

We can already promote someone for Garland if we want to, so that's not really an issue.

While I admire the work ethic and the desperation of Jones, his disposal is shocking and I'd promote Valenti and give him a go if Jones' disposal doesn't improve.

Zomer, may as well give him a go up forward if Bate can't get some form in the coming weeks. Really can't do any worse than the current forward line.

I understand it was an accident but not much good can come out of lunch time footy. In fact as a school teacher I can promise you its a running battle to get young blokes to pull back. No it isn't reality in fact that argument is nothing but pure fiction, so what should we doing? He's just being a kid like he should still be able too, he's just another normal school kid who got hurt kicking the footy.

Garbage he got tackled playing footy at lunch time. Whether he likes it or not he is not a normal kid. What other kid in his year 12 class has a 50 thousand dollar base contract. Would you be just as flipant if Morton broke his leg having a kick with mates in the park because thats what "young guys do". Why is it fiction? I see first hand how hard young blokes go at lunch time footy at think it is a reasonable opinion to think that Sam should not have been placing himself in that situation. I am sure Dean Bailey would have been fairly pissed off.

I'm in agreement. In fact, I'm pretty sure the most professional sporting contracts prohibit players from undertaking activities in which they could potentially injure themselves, apart from the activity that they are paid to do of course.

An NBA player received a suspension after doing something dangerous outside of basketball and hurting himself, as it violated a term in his player contract.

These players give up the option to engage in these sorts of activities by signing their professional contract. I would think the benefits attached to being a professional sportsman outweigh those attached to having a kick of football at lunchtime.

Agreed, it wasn't the same as nathan brown, but from all reports the bone broke clean thru and went throgh his skin making the bone very suseptable to infection. Either way this good affect his ability long term!

That remains to be seen. He is young so he has that up his sleeve but Nathan Brown has continually had pain in his leg and underperformed since his break. I hope Blease doesn't end up in a similar situation - not even having played a senior game yet.

Edit: I just read W=L's post about the nature of the injury which doesn't sound as bad but surely we can't guarantee their won't be niggles or bouts of pain here or there just right atm.

They probably would have had to do surgery anyway to plate it back together, so with an open fracture they have to do surgery. When they do it they will give it a good wash, and shove him on antibiotics for a few weeks. With some modern day medicine I'd be pretty confident he would be able to avoid infection.

I agree with Bails in a way it is a bit silly, but then again he could have been playing footy this weekend and have the same thing happen to him. Just a gentle life lesson for the young man, no doubt he would have been in a good amount of pain and will probably be more cautious in the future. I can imagine he will get a bit of a ribbing from the other players, and should hopefully be spurred into a big preseason when he is right to go.

We need to get Maric, Grimes, Blease, Watts and Strauss exposed to senior footy as much as possible as soon as it is smart to do so. The development of Morton in one season, and Bennell in 5 weeks is testament to what can happen if you give your talented young players an opportunity and some belief.

Yeah agreed, we should wrap them all up in bubble wrap, stick them inside a quarantine zone so they wont contract diseases and then see if guantanamo bay will lock them up until were ready to play them.

Lets not become as anal (not the dirty kind) as the Americans are. Just because hes drafted doesnt mean he should be not allowed to have fun in or out of school.

As for the Rookie promotions, Valenti and Zomer sound good to me. Valenti deserves the shot.

Im not saying that we should rap him in cotton wool fellas. In fact I am realistic that it was an accident. My point is that I speak from experience in regards to school yard injuries. At a school game, training etc you have a more controlled environment with rules, boundaries etc. In school footy no umpires, no rules and often the young blokes are completely kamikazee in their approach. My point is that it is a situation that is open for bad things to happen. I have seen more broken bones as a teacher in 3 years than I have coaching senior footy. I would think the rate of injuries such as this is 2 to 1 at an estimate. I dont expect us to wrap our blokes in cotton wool but I expect some common sense. I am shattered for the young fella. Seen his progress as he grew up playing for Norwood and my old man was involved in the EFL squads he played in as a junior. Lovely kid and super talent just really disappointed as in what looms as a long season he was one of the things I was looking forward to watching later in the year

No doubt but I am eluding to a specific recurring injury that could inhibit a player from reaching their potential. Most AFL players get over arbitrary niggles in a pre-season but depending on the injury some players carry them perpetually. Putting Blease or any other player in cotton wool isn't a realistic solution and not one many would suggest anyway. The school environment (as others have suggested) is a concern however as control factors are just not in place like they are at club level to ensure common sense boundaries.

Totally agree with Bails2008, if you're prepared to apply for the draft with still a year to go then you should also be prepared to forego dinky lunchtime footy. By all means play proper footy on the weekend, go as hard at it as you want and if you do get injured, at least you can qualify it in a reasonable and purposeful manner. There's far too much at stake nowadays in AFL, let alone to jeopardise a highly promising future for a talent such as Blease.

I went to school with a few blokes who were in the exact same situation as Blease (and Watts) and they were forbidden to play footy (or any sort of sporting activity) in the schoolyard. Whether that was a directive from their respective clubs or our general sports assistant who was a former AFL (then VFL) player, I'm not sure, and despite the best efforts of the rest of us to get them to have a kick, they were true to their word and kept out of it. For them, 10 or 11 years of schoolyard footy was more than enough, now they were in the bigtime.

Let's just hope he can recover well and get a regular gig next year.

Mustve been a shocking report on the footy show, because I was told Jack Watts was injured by a few ppl, only later to find out that it was Blease, no good..

Agreed, had an early one last night and missed Hutchy and was today told by 3 or 4 people that Jack Watts had broken his leg and after an hour of anger I found it was actually Blease.

What's happened has happened so there is no point saying he shouldn't have been doing this or that. It has happened & I'm sure the club will be doing everything in it's power to ensure that he makes a full recovery.

Like all MFC supporters I hope this doesn't impact on his footballing future.
