Much respect to a fine footballer.

Save a freak occurrence this year, next year will be the first year West Coast don't have one of their own premiership players on the list since 1992.

A record of 25 years continuous service from premiership players is pretty good, but what is the longest a side has gone with at least one of their own premiership players on the list? Stats gurus?

I imagine it would be an era from Collingwood, followed by Carlton, Hawthorn or Essendon.

Joined us from SA in the 2003 draft along with Beau Waters.

Between them they played 286 out of a possible 326 games. Not together or anything, in total.

Butler has missed 160 games, Waters 206 - though to be fair he's technically been retired for two years so really only missed about 150 odd while a listed player.

Butler was a pretty reliable player when he was in, and was rewarded with 3 Brownlow votes in Rd 2015 (his 12th season) to take his career total to 4. Didn't panic when he had the ball and coming from a soccer background was good on both feet.

Should start this off with a farewell to Sam Butler, the kind of foot soldier that all Premierships need. Well done on a solid career.

and he played with harvey and Thompson so you have back to at least 1984 there too. so they'd be the longest in the modern era I'd thought
Essendon's longest stretch is 38 years from 1897 to 1935. Start with Jim Anderson who played in the 1897 (he actually played in the 1892 VFA team before the VFL was formed), on to Billy Griffth who covers from 1901 to 1912, Fred Baring covered the gap between 1910 to 1924, with Charlie May being the last player from the 1923 Premiership retiring in 1935.

Then there is a gap until the 1942 Premiership side, where there are numerous links from there through the strong years in the 40's-60's up until 1974, when Geoff Pryor from the 1965 Premiership team retired, ending the run of 32 years.

Geoff Pryor played with Simon Madden in 1974, who would be part of the next chain that started in 1984 and continued until Dustin Fletcher retired in 2015 covering 31 years.

I try not to judge people on appearances, but they looked like a couple of arrogant campaigners when they were young :p

Thank god they both turned out fine gentlemen coming from an era where we had some true arrogant campaigners in our team.

Collingwood below, there's been 4 periods in our history when we haven't had a premiership magpie on our list (1892-1896, 1951-1953, 1968-1990, 2001-2010).
